The Central Michigan Chippewas are tied for the best record in the MAC at 6-0 in the conference and 8-2 overall on the season. The Chippewas are on track to have one of the best years in school history and they will take center stage this Wednesday night when they travel to take on the Ball State Cardinals. The Cardinals have been quite horrible on the season winning just 1 game and are running out of chances to end the season on any type of good note. The Cardinals disappointing season has come in the aftermath of a 12 win season just 1 year ago. However, many of those veterans are gone and the offense has really struggled averaging just 20.5 points per game. The Cardinals were able to knock off the Chippewas last year 31-24 for the first time in 6 years and they will be huge underdogs to repeat that task Wednesday night.
The problems for the Cardinals have been mainly from the passing offense that ranks a horrific 114th in the country with just 143.7 yards through the air per game. The Cardinals offensive woes have been the reason for their demise this season after such a huge season in 2008. QB Kelly Page has completed just 52% on the season and has thrown 9 interceptions with 7 scores. The only real success by the offense has been gathered by running back MiQuale Lewis. Lewis has just less than 800 yards averaging 5.2 yards per carry and 4 scores on the season. The Cardinals offense will have to find some playmakers this Wednesday night if they are going to contend. The offense just has not proved they have what it takes to stack up, but they have played the Chippewas well in recent years battling out some close contests.
The Chippewas offense has racked up over 400 yards of total offense this season and they will go to war with a defense that has allowed just less than 30 points per game. Outside of a few out of conference games, Central Michigan has been stellar this year. QB Dan LeFevour is completing a very impressive 70% on the season with 18 touchdowns and 5 picks. LeFevour is likely the best quarterback in the MAC and the Chippewas are a dangerous force through the air. WR Antonio Brown is another real dangerous threat on the outside. Brown has posted 69 catches on the year while recording 734 yards and 8 scores. If the passing offense is not enough to worry about, LeFevour can move the ball on the ground as well. LeFevour leads the team with 567 yards on 137 yards as the dual threat behind center and he will continue to give Ball State all types of problems again this Wednesday night.
Despite winning just 1 game in the last 13 outings, Ball State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games at home. The Cardinals have also reached the under total in 4 of the last 5 games as well. Central Michigan is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games while also holding a 4-2 ATS mark in their last 6 games on the road. However, the real difference in the game will be the Central Michigan defense. Ball State has had all types of struggles this year and now they get the luxury of battling with a Chippewas defense that has allowed just 18 points per game on the year. Expect those struggles for the Cardinals to continue, and Central Michigan will roll big.
Pick – Central Michigan -16.5
