Two of the worst ATS teams in the game meet in NBA betting action on Wednesday night, when the New York Knicks take on the Chicago Bulls at Madison Square Garden.
Chicago has had all sorts of injury problems this year, and we aren’t even going to make much mention of G Derrick Rose in this conversation. G Jimmy Butler has yet to play a game this month and is nowhere near doing so, while both G Mike James and F Luol Deng are questionable for this one. C Joakim Noah sat out last night against the Milwaukee Bucks, but he figures to play in this one as well. There are only five players who have played in all 19 games this year for Chicago, and the only three of any note are F Carlos Boozer, F Taj Gibson, and G Kirk Hinrich. Hinrich has been a disappointment this year, though. He isn’t expected to be a big scorer, but for a man who is spending nearly 32 minutes per game on the court, he should be doing more than 8.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. Four different Bulls are averaging at least 6.8 boards per game, which is nothing new for one of the best frontcourts in the league. Deng is the team’s leading scorer at 19.4 points per game, and he badly needs to get back out there to give Chicago a chance at victory.
If you like close games, you’re definitely not watching the right team if you’re watching the Knicks. They tied an NBA record by playing three consecutive games which were decided by 30 points or more, and though Tuesday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers was ugly, it was “only” by 15 points. The bottom line is that this team just isn’t all that good in spite of the fact that there are “names” all over the place. Only having C Tyson Chandler for four games thus far this season hasn’t helped matters any, and the other fact of the matter is that carrying around F Amare Stoudemire, F Metta World Peace, and F Kenyon Martin on the roster is a waste. G Iman Shumpert is one of the worst used players in the league, yet he still has some excellent trade value in spite of the fact that he is only pitching in 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. New York should deal him now and get what it can get for him.
For as bad as both of these teams have been at times this year, Chicago is the far “less bad” team. The Bulls will get their acts together at some point, and it might start right now against New York. We would much rather back the Bulls than the Knicks when both teams are in back to back situations, as we think the former are much better coached and much more prepared to take a big step in the right direction when playing on consecutive nights.
