It’s one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports. It’s time for the Yankees versus the Red Sox. The Red Sox visit the Bronx for the final game of a three game set Thursday night at 7:05 PM.
Both teams come into this game with significant injuries. The Red Sox are without David Ortiz and the Yankees are missing just about half of their starting lineup. They have injuries to key players Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, and Curtis Granderson. Alex Rodriguez is also on the DL. In spite of key injuries to both sides, Dustin Pedroia will be in the outfield for Boston and he has a career .320 average when facing the Yankees. Jacoby Ellsbury also hits the Yankees well as he has a .285 average against them. The Yankees still have superstars Robinson Cano and Ichiro Suzuki healthy. They hit Boston pitching well as both have averages over .300.
Andy Pettitte will be taking the mound for the men in pinstripes. Pettitte has good career numbers against Boston. He is 18-10 lifetime with a respectable ERA of 3.91. However, Red Sox batters hit him rather well as they have a team batting average of .287 against Pettitte.
Ryan Dempster on the other hand has never done well when facing the Yankees. He is 0-4 lifetime with an ERA of 7.62. The Yankee hitters have feasted on him as they are hitting .354 against him.
In spite of all the injuries it is always exciting when these two teams face each other. I give the slight edge to the Yankees because of the big game ability of Andy Pettitte. He is certainly a clutch player. Also, a lean to a slight play on the over.
