- Updated: March 11, 2013
The conference tournaments tip-off this week and fans all over the country will be entertained by early games and buzzer-beaters as teams scramble to be champion of their conference. The lofty title comes with plenty of perks, most notably an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. One of the most exciting tournaments this season is destined to be the Big 12 tournament.
The Big 12 tournament will be hosted by the Sprint Center located in Kansas City Missouri. The first round begins on March 13th and that is followed by the quarterfinals on March 14th and the semifinals on March 15th. The Championship game will be held on March 16th and will feature some of the best teams in the country.
This tournament is a bit unique because the defending champion Missouri Tigers now plays in a different conference as they are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). That means there will be a new champion this year and here is a look at the favorites to win it all. The Kansas Jayhawks (-180) are the overwhelming favorites to win this event; however they have had some tough games, including the season finale against the Baylor Bears.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys (+350) and the Kansas State Wildcats (+350) are the next closest teams that are considered favorites.
When it comes to sleeper teams that can cut down the nets, the Oklahoma Sooners (+700) and the Iowa State Cyclones (+600) deserve mention. However, the biggest sleeper to keep on the radar is the Baylor Bears (+800). The Bears trounced Kansas to end the season and will enter this tournament with momentum.
Baylor is a nice sleeper to win it all, but our pick is the aforementioned Wildcats (+350). They have an easier path to the finals with only Baylor or a rematch with Cowboys standing in their way. The Wildcats play a tough defensive game and have had some great wins this season to include wins over Oklahoma State and Florida.
