The German Bundesliga trophy is practically in Bayern’s hands and the battle for the title is far from interesting, but there are several teams who are the contenders for high places in the standings and Schalke is one of them.
Bayern is 18 points clear from the followers and already has an eye set on the upcoming Champions League tie with Besiktas, but if you think they will lack motivation against Schalke, you’re horribly wrong. The visitors are fighting for the UCL spot next season and a potentially positive result here could be a huge morale booster for them. The game will take place at Allianz Arena on Saturday, February 10th.

The Bavarians are in a fantastic winning streak of 11 games, and it seems that nothing can stop them from clinching the sixth consecutive Bundesliga title. Bayern is in the 1st place with 53 points, 18 ahead than Leverkusen and Leipzig, and with 13 more rounds to be played it is hard to expect them to drop the top spot. Jupp Heynckes’ side qualified for the semi-finals of DFB Pokal after destroying Paderborn 6-0, thanks to goals from Coman, Lewandowski, Kimmich, Tolisso, and Robben’s brace.
Bayern Munich played 32 games so far in the 2017/18, recording 27 victories, two draws, and three losses, with a goal difference of 82:26, which is 3.37 goals per contest on average. The Bavarians are without a home defeat in this season and just one draw, while they scored ten goals in the previous three matches at Allianz Arena, conceding five in return.
Robert Lewandowski is the team’s top scorer with 25 goals in 30 appearances and is way ahead of his teammates on a goal-scoring chart, but Corentin Tolisso, Kingsley Coman, Arturo Vidal, and Thomas Muller also play a significant role in the attack with six goals apiece. Joshua Kimmich is the best-assist maker with 11 dishes; Coman and James Rodriguez have eight each, while Muller and Arjen Robben added seven assists to their respective names. Jupp Heynckes is definitely without Manuel Neuer for this clash as the goalkeeper is still recovering from a metatarsal fracture, while Thiago (muscle), Javi Martinez (ankle), and Muller (thigh) are doubtful to feature.
The Miners are not in a particularly good form in Bundesliga at the moment, but they progressed to the semis of the DFB Pokal after a 1-0 home victory over Wolfsburg. Guido Burgastaller scored the only goal in the 10th minute and helped Schalke to bounce back from a painful 2-1 defeat to Werder in the previous Bundesliga round. Schalke led in that game until the 78th minute and Matija Nastasic’s second yellow card as Werder exploited a situation with a man up and sank the hosts. The Royal Blues are in the 5th position with 34 points and are dreaming of qualifying for the next season’s Champions League, but there are other suitors and it’s going to be interesting to see whether Schalke has the quality to represent Germany in Europe’s elite club competition.
Schalke 04 played 25 games in this campaign, recording 13 victories, seven draws, and five losses, with a goal difference of 40:28, which is 2.72 goals per contest on average. The Miners won one and lost one out of the previous five road matches, scoring ten goals and allowing ten in return.
Guido Burgstaller is the team’s leading scorer with nine goals in 24 appearances; the experienced centre-back Naldo has five goals to his name, while Yevhen Konoplyanka and Leon Goretzka added four goals apiece. Amine Harit is the most creative individual with seven assists so far; Daniel Caligiuri and Burgstaller have five each, while Konoplyanka and Bastian Oczipka recorded four assists to their respective names. Domenico Tedesco cannot count on Matija Nastasic who is suspended, while Weston McKennie (knee) and Pablo Insua (inflammation) are out injured.
Bayern Munich vs Schalke 04 – Betting Trends and Match Prediction
- Bayern won ten consecutive matches at home
- Bayern scored 16 goals in the last five home games in Bundesliga
- Bayern conceded four goals in the two latest league games at Allianz Arena
- Schalke failed to find the net on just two out of 13 road games this season
- Schalke scored ten goals in the last five away games
Schalke is without a victory in H2H duels since the cup match in March 2011, while their last league win came in 2010. Bayern won five out of the previous six meetings and it past nine years since the Miners beat them at Allianz Arena, so I believe the hosts are huge favorites on this one. However, the Bavarians’ defense proved to be rather leaky at home lately, so I think Schalke will find the way behind Sven Ulreich’s back.
MY PICK: Both teams to score YES (-105)
