There aren’t too many teams in the major leagues right now who are as challenged at the moment as the Miami Marlins, who actually got off to a pretty good start but have now lost 18 of their last 22 games. On Friday they will take the field against another one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitchers who has been very effective, in a game that starts at 10:10 PM ET at Dodger Stadium. VietBet customers will have the opportunity to place wagers even after the game has begun, using the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra.
The Marlins come into this game with a mark of 14-26, and that means they are one percentage point away from being the worst team, record-wise, in the National League. The Dodgers are 24-18, and are two games behind the Colorado Rockies in the NL West.
Justin Nicolino (0-0, 1.50 ERA) takes the mound for the Marlins. The former second-round draft choice (2010, by Toronto) has been up and down with Miami, and came up last week from Triple-A New Orleans. He was extremely effective the last time he faced the Dodgers. And he will have to be very much on his game if he is going to duel Alex Wood (4-0, 2.27 ERA), who has been sensational in most of his starts for the Boys in Blue.
In the baseball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at VietBet, the Dodgers are substantial favorites:
Los Angeles Dodgers (Wood) -230
Miami Marlins (Nicolino) +210
Dodgers -1.5 Runs -105
Marlins +1.5 Runs -115
Under 8 Runs -120
Over 8 Runs +100
Wood, who, like Nicolino, is a southpaw, had a rocky first start of the season against the Cubs, walking five batters in less than four innings, but he is settled in and is holding opposing batters to a .187 average. Over the last year he has struck out 28.5% of the batters he has faced, and he has also managed to keep the ball in the park, yielding only one homer in 35 2/3 innings of work. Three of his last four starts have been absolutely outstanding.
Nicolino has made only one start, and that was on May 14, when he allowed one run in six innings against the Atlanta Braves. But he walked four batters in that game. Control is a potential problem for him, as he walked 16 batters in 38 innings with New Orleans, and he doesn’t throw the ball by a lot of people, at least at the major league level, with 3.7 strikeouts per nine innings for his big league career. But VietBet patrons may have caught his act last April 27, as he gave up just two hits in 7 1/3 scoreless innings against the Dodgers. So he won’t be going into this atmosphere intimidated.
When it comes down to the bullpen action, Los Angeles has the clear edge, as relief pitchers have compiled a 2.23 ERA at home. On Thursday, in a 7-2 victory over Miami, they struck out ten of the 13 batters they faced. Meanwhile, Miami’s bullpen has a 4.71 road ERA.
Under normal circumstances, we might be a little suspect about the Dodgers here, because they have admittedly had their share of problems against southpaws. But Miami has hit just .215 as a team over the last seven games, scoring only ten times in their last six, and all of their last seven losses have come by two runs or more. As a result, it might make sense for us to lay a run and a half with the Dodgers, who are priced at -105 in that proposition.
