The Detroit Red Wings were thrashed just yesterday on Sunday by the Chicago Blackhawks, and they are going to be back in action right away at home on Monday in NHL betting action when they take on the Colorado Avalanche.

The Avs finally got back into some better form on Saturday when they took care of the Nashville Predators in a crucial 1-0 victory in overtime. Colorado had allowed eight goals in its previous two games, and it had allowed an average of 4.33 goals per game in its previous nine games. In each of those games, the team allowed at least three goals. It was the best game of the season by G Semyon Varlamov, who stopped all 34 shots on goal, including 27 in the first two periods before the team really cracked down defensively. Still, this is a team that has a heck of a lot of problems. The club has one of the worst records in hockey, and it ranks 24th in total offense at 2.4 goals per game and 27th defensively at 3.1 goals per game. The good news is that RW PA Parenteau and C Matt Duchene have 68 points between them. The bad news is that the rest of the team only has a total of 161 points for the campaign, and there isn’t another player on the team that has scored at least 20 points.

The Red Wings are starting to slide once again, and they could be in a heck of a lot of trouble. They enter this week in seventh place in the Western Conference, but they are only three points clear of the St. Louis Blues, who are in ninth place. There are a number of teams that are right on Detroit’s backside, and it has as many or more games played than everyone else in the conference outside of the Columbus Blue Jackets. To make matters worse, the offense has mustered exactly one goal in the last two games in spite of the fact that it has outshot its foes 61-50 in those two clashes. This is the first time in quite some time that there is a real threat for the Red Wings to not make the playoffs, and we are going to see in games like this one that should be won whether this is a team that is going to have to moxie to get the job done.

For as poorly as the Red Wings have been playing, and considering the fact that this is the second game in as many days, we aren’t really all that sure why they are favored by such a huge margin. Colorado is dreadful, but it isn’t that dreadful, and it will win this game at least a large enough percentage of the time to ultimately make this profitable.
