NCAA Football Betting Favorite: Arkansas -10
Auburn was supposed to be down quite a bit this year, but last week’s win at South Carolina really surprised a lot of people. The Tigers lost more starters than any other team in the nation, but Gene Chizik’s team is still pretty competitive. Arkansas lost running back Knile Davis to an injury before the season, but the Razorbacks have lost just once this season. This should be a good battle of two top 25 teams in the SEC.
If you look at the statistics, Auburn hasn’t been that good this year, but they have found a way to win four of their five games. Barrett Trotter has just 895 passing yards so far this season, and the team often struggles against a good secondary. Michael Dyer is the team’s best play maker, and he already has seven touchdowns this year. Emory Blake is the team’s leading receiver so far this season, but he is listed as doubtful for this game due to a foot injury.
The Tigers defense is giving up 440 yards per contest so far this year. The front seven has had a terrible time stopping the run. Auburn is giving up 207 yards on the ground this year. The defense has managed to force quite a few field goals and turnovers, which has limited the damage in key situations this year.
Arkansas trailed 35-17 at half against Texas A&M last week, but the team rallied all the way back for a big 42-38 victory. If the Razorbacks had lost that game it would have been two straight losses, but Bobby Petrino’s team is looking at a much brighter picture after the huge comeback.
Tyler Wilson threw for an amazing 510 yards last week in the Razorbacks big win. Arkansas lost a very good quarterback when Ryan Mallett graduated last year, but Wilson has done a tremendous job taking his spot this season. Many inside the program believe Wilson has an even higher upside than Mallett. Wilson has already thrown for 1,517 yards and 10 touchdowns this year. The offense is clearly hurt by the loss of Davis, but Ronnie Wingo and Dennis Johnson have been pretty good for them the last couple weeks. Nobody in the country has three wide receivers that are better than Arkansas. Jarius Wright, Joe Adams, and Cobi Hamilton are all great playmakers on the outside.
The Razorbacks defense was scorched for more than 600 yards against Texas A&M last week. Arkansas has several key defensive linemen injured right now, and that is really hurting their run defense. Expect Dyer and the Tigers to test this defense on the ground this Saturday. If Arkansas can’t stop the run, it could be a long game for them.
Arkansas is the more complete team here, but Auburn should be able to stay in the game with their running attack. The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two.
