Appalachian State gets the nod to win the Sun Belt Conference and the Mountaineers are going to be tough to beat. Eli Drinkwitz takes over as head coach and the former NC State offensive coordinator has a solid football mind and is one of the younger head coaches at 36. Drinkwitz and the Mountaineers do welcome back quarterback Zac Thomas and return a solid defense.
Arkansas State is a solid favorite to meet ASU in the title game, as the West representative, although Troy is probably a better team, but happen to play in the East along with Appalachian State. But Troy does get to host the Mountaineers in what should determine the conference. Appalachian State is the better team, but the Trojans are one of the few teams that can come close to holding their own in the trenches against Appalachian State.
Lafayette and Monroe appear to be the teams battling it out for second place in the West and it’s hard not to like the job Matt Viator has done with the Warhawks. Monroe should be in the hunt for seven or eight wins this season, but not sure if they’re quite ready to challenge the top dogs just yet, but they do have some talent up front on both sides of the ball.
We’ll look at the odds from 5Dimes as of Aug. 24.
Odds to Win the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championship
While I think Appalachian State wins the conference, the odds on Troy are decent enough that it wouldn’t be the worst move to make a value play on the Trojans, who will get the Mountaineers at home. Arkansas State gets Lafayette at home, which is one reason they’re solidly at No. 2 and favored to win the West.
Odds to Win the Sun Belt Conference East Division
While Troy isn’t a bad value play to win the Sun Belt at +685 there really isn’t any reason to take them to win the division at +255. The primary reason in taking the Trojans to win the conference is the hefty odds, which aren’t there to win the division.
Odds to Win the Sun Belt Conference West Division
Even though UL Monroe is on the upswing, those odds of +375 aren’t really that enticing, considering they’d have to finish in front of both the Ragin’ Cajuns and the Arkansas State Red Wolves. If you’re looking for an underdog, UL Lafayette probably offers a little more value, although they do make things a little interesting on defense at times.
