Martin Truex Jr. is the new Monster Energy Cup points leader, but Kyle Bush is still listed as the man to beat, as the first race of NASCAR’s playoffs is in the books and Truex became the first man to win five races this season, which moved him three points in front of Kevin Harvick. Truex is tied for third with 11 top five finishes.

Harvick is the current leader of the Ford contingent, but his three DNFs could very well come back to haunt him, as those are the most of any of the drivers in the top five after the first playoff race.

Joey Logano has just two wins this season, the fewest of the drivers in the top five, but has also finished every race, which is a big reason why he’s in third place in the points standings. His nine stage wins are second only to Kyle Bush, but those haven’t really translated to overall victories too often.

Kyle Busch dropped to fourth place in the standings after a disappointing finish in Las Vegas, but pretty much dominated the field during the regular season and can be forgiven for a less-than-stellar effort last week.¬† He’s the favorite to win this weekend’s Federated Auto Parts 400, but could feel a little bit of pressure, but that’s often when he’s at his best.

Brad Keselowski is in fifth place, 24 points behind Truex, and hasn’t had the greatest of racing luck this year. His 966 laps led are second only to Kyle Bush, but he has just three wins and 10 top-five finishes.

Chase Elliott is No. 6 in the points standings and the leader of the Chevrolet drivers, with 2,057 points, which is 25 points behind Truex. It’s been a bit of a strange season for Elliott, as his two wins tie with Logano for the fewest victories among drivers in the top seven and his nine top-five finishes are the fewest of the drivers in the top seven, yet he’s right in the championship mix.

Denny Hamlin rounds out the top seven and he’s a point behind Elliott and 12 points clear of eighth-place Kyle Larson. His 13 top-five finishes tie him with Kyle Busch as the most and he has four victories.
