big ten conference tournament previewWe’ve seen a change at the top of the Big Ten odds since we first looked at the odds a month ago, as the Michigan Wolverines have jumped past the Ohio State Buckeyes as the conference favorite. The Wolverines moved from +215 to +150 to take over the top spot, while the Buckeyes fell from +165 to +175.

The Wisconsin Badgers made a pretty good-sized move from +1400 to +800 and are No. 3 in the conference, and Nebraska dropped to No. 4 even though the Cornhuskers also saw a slight decrease in odds.

We’ll look at the odds from 5Dimes as of Aug. 26.

Odds to Win the Big Ten Championship

Team Odds
Michigan +150
Ohio State +175
Wisconsin +800
Nebraska +950
Michigan State +1100
Penn State +1800
Minnesota +2125
Purdue, Iowa +2800
Northwestern +4000
Indiana +10000
Maryland, Illinois +50000
Rutgers +100000

Clearly, it’s expected to be a two-horse race between Michigan and Ohio State and while I gave the nod to the Wolverines in our first look at the odds that was when Michigan was +215, as opposed to +150.

Odds to Win the Big Ten East Division

Team Odds
Ohio State +125
Michigan +135
Michigan State +575
Penn State +750
Indiana +3300
Maryland +20000
Rutgers +40000

Strangely, the Buckeyes are still favored to win the East despite the Wolverines the overall favorite. The odds on Michigan to win the conference championship game aren’t much higher than the odds to win the division, so if you like Michigan, that may be the way to go. The same can be said for the Buckeyes, only to a slightly smaller extent.

Odds to Win the Big Ten West Division

Team Odds
Nebraska +220
Wisconsin +300
Minnesota +425
Iowa, Purdue +500
Northwestern +615
Illinois +10000

Plenty of people are expecting good things from Scott Frost’s crew and they landed a big-time player in freshman Wan’Dale Robinson, but the Badgers still have the best offensive player in the conference in Jonathan Taylor. The ‘Huskers did see a drop in their odds to win the division, moving from +310 a month ago down to the current +220. The Badgers also saw a slight decrease in odds, moving from +350 to +300.

The Purdue Boilermakers are moving in the opposite direction, both in terms of winning the conference and the division, as Purdue was +330 in our first look and have fallen all the way to +500.

Among the long shots, Iowa may be worth a look here, although it’s hard to classify them as a true long shot at those odds, but the Hawkeyes return Nate Stanley at quarterback and are solid along both lines, which are always key in college football.
