Preview: Dodgers (22-30) at Rockies (28-26)
Game: 1
Venue: Coors Field
Date: May 31, 2013 8:40 PM EDT

Although they'll have to move on without one All-Star, the Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be in good hands with another taking the ball as they open a series at Coors Field.

Left-handed ace Clayton Kershaw looks to bounce back from his first defeat in more than a month on Friday night when the Dodgers visit the slumping Colorado Rockies.

Before Thursday's 3-2 loss to the rival Los Angeles Angels, the Dodgers (22-30) placed Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list because of a right hamstring strain. Kemp, who was injured in Wednesday's loss, is batting .251 this season with two homers and 17 RBIs following offseason shoulder surgery, but just 1 for 17 with 10 strikeouts in his last six games.

"I never want to be away from the game, but I have to at the moment," said Kemp, who was replaced in center field by Andre Ethier. "It comes with the territory, but it's disappointing."

The last-place Dodgers hope to regroup behind the two-time All-Star Kershaw (5-3, 1.68 ERA) in the opener of this three-game series versus the Rockies (28-26).

The 2011 NL Cy Young Award winner suffered his first defeat since April 17 on Sunday, giving up four runs and seven hits in seven innings in a 5-3 loss to St. Louis. Kershaw hadn't yielded more than three earned runs in any of his previous 22 starts - the longest such streak by a Dodger since Orel Hershiser's 27-game stretch from July 12, 1985 to May 25, 1986.

"You're not going to be able to just go out there and throw up zeros or one run every time," Kershaw said. "You've got to battle sometimes."

Kershaw will try to begin another impressive stretch versus a Colorado team that has dropped five of six following a 7-5 home loss to AL-worst Houston on Thursday.

"They were able to get big hits and we didn't," said catcher Yorvit Torrealba, who had three hits. "Now we've got to move on and hopefully play good baseball against the Dodgers.'

Kershaw is 6-1 with a 2.89 ERA in his last 14 starts against the Rockies, though he's allowed 11 runs and 14 hits over 13 1-3 innings in his last two outings at Coors Field.

Carlos Gonzalez, who took Kershaw deep twice in his last start in Colorado, is hitting .406 in 28 career home games against the Dodgers.

Although teammate Troy Tulowitzki leads the majors with a .405 average at home, he's batting .211 with one homer in 38 career at_bats when facing Kershaw.

Colorado starter Jon Garland (3-6, 5.05) will try to avoid matching a career-worst fifth straight losing start, going 0-4 with a 6.86 ERA since his last victory over Tampa Bay on May 4.

The right-hander is 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA in five career starts against the Dodgers.

Carl Crawford is 1 for 12 in his last three games and also 1 for 18 lifetime against Garland.

Slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez went 0 for 3 in Thursday's loss, leaving him 5 for 35 (.143) with one homer in his last 10 road games.

Jerry Hairston Jr. went 5 for 9 with a homer and three RBIs as the Dodgers dropped two of three to the visiting Rockies April 29-May 1.

Colorado has outscored Los Angeles 76-48 while winning eight of 11 meetings at Coors Field.

Preview: Astros (17-37) at Angels (25-29)
Game: 1
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: May 31, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels are surging, and on the verge of their longest winning streak at home in seven seasons.

They'll go for their seventh win in a row there Friday night when Tommy Hanson's first start in nearly four weeks will be against the improving Houston Astros.

The Angels (24-30) saw their run in Anaheim reach six Thursday with a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers, giving them 10 wins in 12 games overall.

"You can see everybody's hungry to win," said third baseman Chris Nelson, who had his first two hits and RBI since being acquired off waivers from the New York Yankees two weeks ago.

The Angels' last seven-game home winning streak was Aug. 5-22, 2006.

They'll now play four against an Astros team that just took three of four from Colorado. Houston (17-37) won the last two in Denver for its first set of back-to-back victories since May 7-8 against the Angels.

"We're finding ways to win," manager Bo Porter said after a 7-5 victory Thursday.

The Astros won a season-high three straight April 9-12. The last game of that stretch was against Hanson (2-1, 3.86 ERA), who gave up five runs in five innings with five walks in a 5-0 defeat.

The right-hander will be taking the ball for the first time since throwing five innings of three-run ball in a 5-4 loss to Baltimore on May 4. That was Hanson's second outing after returning from the bereavement list, but he needed more time to deal with the loss of his stepbrother and the Angels placed him on the restricted list May 10.

Hanson has been training at the team's complex in Arizona.

He'll face a suddenly dangerous Astros lineup that includes J.D. Martinez, Chris Carter and Jason Castro. Martinez has gone 8 for 13 in the last three games after setting a career high with four hits Thursday.

Carter, who hit a three-run homer in the win, has three home runs and seven RBIs against the Angels this season.

Castro, the AL player of the week, is 13 for 21 with two homers and five RBIs in his last seven games. He'll likely be behind the plate Friday with Dallas Keuchel (1-2, 5.09) on the hill.

The left-hander is trying to move past a 6-2 loss to Oakland on Sunday in which he yielded six runs - four earned - and a season-high 10 hits in six innings.

Keuchel has gone 1-1 with a 5.92 ERA in four starts since joining the rotation.

This will be his first start against the Angels. He gave up one run in 1 1-3 inning of relief in a 7-6 home win over Los Angeles on May 7.

It's uncertain if he'll have to face Josh Hamilton, who has been out of the lineup for two of the last three games with back spasms. Hamilton, who entered Thursday's game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement, has half of his eight homers this season against the Astros.

Hamilton also leads the Angels with six RBIs as these teams have split six games in 2013.

Los Angeles took two of three in Houston's last visit April 12-14 to improve to 4-2 all-time as the home team in this series.

Preview: White Sox (24-27) at Athletics (31-24)
Game: 1
Venue: O.co Coliseum
Date: May 31, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

Despite losing their most recent game, the Oakland Athletics have the best record in the majors over the last two weeks. They'll try to add to that against a team that's cooled off from its hot stretch.

The A's will look to earn their 12th win in 14 games Friday night while sending the Chicago White Sox to a fourth consecutive defeat.

Oakland (31-24) failed to sweep a four-game series against San Francisco on Thursday, falling 5-2 to snap a run of six consecutive wins. The A's managed five hits after batting .303 and scoring 36 runs in their previous five games.

"We're playing the game the right way and I guarantee you we'll be ready for the White Sox," third baseman Josh Donaldson said.

Oakland will try to bounce back by adding to a season-high, five-game home win streak and will next face a team that was dominated in its past three contests.

The White Sox (24-27) were outscored 24-6 in three games against the Cubs, the last two at Wrigley Field. The White Sox, who had won 10 of 14 before the series, lost 8-3 on Thursday.

"Anytime you have three games like this at any point it's discouraging," manager Robin Ventura said. "You know, again, you've got to regroup and go. ... We've shown that we can play a lot better than this and we're going to have to prove it again."

Bartolo Colon (5-2, 3.82 ERA) will try to add to Chicago's woes while building on one of his best starts of the season. The right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings and walked none for the seventh time in 10 outings in a 6-2 victory at Houston on Sunday.

Colon has a 1.29 ERA in winning his last two starts after going 0-2 with a 7.17 ERA in his previous four.

"He knows how to make a pitch when he needs to and I thought his stuff actually was as good today as we've seen all year," manager Bob Melvin said.

Colon went 0-2 with a 4.97 ERA in two starts against the White Sox last season but was solid in a 4-0 home loss April 23, 2012, giving up two runs over seven innings.

In this matchup, he'll pitch opposite Dylan Axelrod (3-3, 4.21), who has won three straight starts thanks in large part to some generous support. The right-hander has a 4.32 ERA during the win streak and has gotten 15 runs from his teammates.

He received a combined 16 runs in his first seven starts and went 0-3 with a 4.17 ERA.

Axelrod has never faced Oakland or any A's hitter.

One of those batters, Yoenis Cespedes, is riding a career-high 12-game hit streak. He was 6 for 23 (.261) with a homer as Oakland split six games with the White Sox last season.

The A's might get starting outfielder Josh Reddick back from a sprained right wrist Friday. Reddick, a career .109 hitter in 13 games against the White Sox, is batting .152 with one home run in 29 contests after hitting .242 with a career-high 32 homers in 2012.

Chicago right fielder Alex Rios is 9 for 22 (.409) against Colon and hitting .381 (16 for 42) in last 10 games versus Oakland.

Preview: Blue Jays (23-31) at Padres (24-29)
Game: 1
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: May 31, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres haven't had much help from the rotation during their recent rough stretch, though Jason Marquis has been their most consistent starter the past month.

The right-hander will try to win for the sixth time in seven starts on Friday night when the Padres host a Toronto Blue Jays team that has struggled on the road.

After splitting its four-game season series with Seattle, San Diego (24-29) looks to even its season record at 5-5 versus AL opponents with its third win in four games.

Thursday's loser Andrew Cashner allowed four runs and seven hits - three homers - over six innings in a 7-1 loss to the Mariners, leaving San Diego starters with a 5.72 ERA during the team's 3-6 stretch.

"I have to be better than that,' Cashner said.

The Padres are hoping for better results with Marquis (6-2, 3.70 ERA) on the mound as they open this three-game series.

Marquis had settled into a groove while winning five consecutive outings before leaving without a decision Sunday in his shortest stint since May 20, 2012. He allowed four runs and seven hits in 3 1-3 innings in a 6-5 loss at Arizona.

The sinkerballer continues to labor with his command, walking four for the third straight start to raise his total to 32 - among the most in the major leagues.

"There were some positives and some negatives,' said Marquis. "Obviously, I would like to go deeper. I just wasn't executing."

Marquis is 1-2 with a 6.19 ERA in three career starts against the Blue Jays, allowing six runs and seven hits over four innings in a 6-2 loss while with Minnesota on May 10, 2012.

Edwin Encarnacion should be happy seeing Marquis again, since he's 9 for 18 with two homers against him. He's also 10 for 20 with two homers in his last five road games, but has hit .178 in 11 career games at Petco Park.

Teammate Jose Bautista is batting .439 with three homers over his last 10 games, though he's hitting .163 lifetime in San Diego and is 4 for 17 versus Marquis.

The Blue Jays lost for the 13th time in 19 road contests and ended up with a split of their four-game series against Atlanta with an 11-3 defeat Thursday.

"There are some positives that I want to take out of tonight even though it was a tough loss for us and even though it was a tough loss for me personally,' said starter R.A. Dickey, who fell to 4-7.

While Toronto starters have a 5.42 ERA over those 19 road games, Chad Jenkins (1-0, 3.60) looks to reverse that trend as the team continues a seven-game road trip against NL opponents.

After missing the first month of the season with shoulder inflammation, the right-hander has gone five innings and allowed four runs and 15 hits in a pair of Toronto victories.

Jenkins, who has never faced the Padres, will try to keep San Diego's bats quiet after the team was held to 10 runs and a .209 batting average in four games against the Mariners.

Although he's hit safely in four straight games, Chase Headley is hitting .178 with one homer over his last 12 as his average has dropped 37 points to .259. In his lone series against Toronto in 2010, Headley went 0 for 11 over three games.

The Blue Jays have won four of six all-time meetings.

Capping the calendar: June's best and worst MLB pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MLB calendar flips to June and we look at which pitchers perform well in the third month of the schedule and which ones run out of gas in June.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a 2-to-1 or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in June team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts with at least one start each June over the last three years.

GOOD JUNE PITCHERS

Joe Blanton, Los Angeles Angels • 7-3

This might take a leap of faith to back the Angels right-hander who is on pace to have the worst year of career. If he’s going to help his team the rest of the season, giving up over 1.5 hits per innings pitched has to change immediately. Maybe turning the calendar will help.

Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox • 11-1

Buchholz begins this month after missing a start with irritation in his collarbone/AC joint. Otherwise, the Red Sox righty has done little wrong in 2013, as opposing batters are below the Mendoza Line (.200 batting average) against his tosses this year. The biggest difference is his ability to be focused for each start, which was not the case previously.

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds • 10-4

Having returned from the DL on May 20, Cueto is expected to continue what was the start of a quality campaign. Being backed with a ballclub which can score runs helps, but the Dominican native hides the ball expertly with a lively two and four-seam fastballs and a quick biting slider. Confident hurler.

Ryan Dempster, Boston Red Sox • 11-3

The 36-year-old right-hander has struggled to find his pitch location, explaining his mediocre record. The fastball has lacked the tailing action of the past and left-handed batters are squaring up his tosses more often. It’s time for Dempster to start contributing for Boston.

R.A. Dickey, Toronto Blue Jays • 12-4

The dancing knuckleball has not been there for the Cy Young winner. Consistently, Dickey has not had the same dropping action from his knuckler as last year, which is why he’s been so prone to the long ball. The conundrum is exasperated by the fact this has not happened even when he changed speeds. It is time for Dickey to start earning his wages.

Jason Hammel, Baltimore Orioles • 11-5

In spite of a solid record this year, Hammel still has an ERA over 5.00. Where he’s been generally improved is more quality starts, but when Orioles starter has an “off day”, he is hammered. If the 6-foot-6 right-hander can maintain the same win percentage in June as in the past, manager Buck Showalter will take it.

Tommy Hanson, Arizona Diamondbacks • 12-2

Has been on the restricted list and on May 25 threw a five-inning, 75-pitch simulated game in Arizona and appears to be on the verge of rejoining the Angels' staff. With the Angels’ recent play; they would really like to have one of their main starters back to strengthen the rotation and the bullpen. Having Hanson put together another hot June would be a big plus.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians • 11-5

No longer the mid-to-upper 90’s pitcher from his Colorado days, Jimenez is a back of the rotation starter for Cleveland, capable of two or three solid outings in a row and then struggle with his complicated delivery and be tagged. Always the key for this 29 year old is not walking batters, since that is when things unravel.

Mat Latos, Cincinnati Reds • 12-4

Since arriving in Cincinnati, Latos has grown up and pitched with greater maturity. He is less bothered with mistakes and moves on to the next pitch instead of dwelling on what happened two batters ago. Could reach the next level as a pitcher if he develops a better plan for going through the lineup the third and fourth time.

Jon Niese, New York Mets • 13-4

Not having a very good season on a below average club, Niese has started to focus on himself. The lefty has developed bad mechanics, leaning to the side and forward in his delivery instead of being straight up. The Mets year is probably lost, but Niese can turn it around by doing what he does best with his drop-and-drive motion.

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays • 12-5

Price has been on the DL since May 15 with a left triceps strain in the midst of his worst professional season. Maybe the rest will help and the velocity will return for the current AL Cy Young winner. Hard to imagine Tampa Bay makes the playoffs without Price finishing the year strong when he returns.

C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees • 14-2

For really the first time, the Yankees big man is starting to show some mileage. Sabathia’s batting average allowed is on a pace for a career-worst and he is well ahead of surrendering the most home runs of his storied career (11 to this point; 22 HR is previous high). The fastball has lost a couple of miles per hour and his slurvy breaking pitches have not yet had the usual bite. Nonetheless, he’s still C.C. and chances are he will figure out how to win more games.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers • 14-3

After a couple of domineering years, Detroit’s ace has been ordinary by his standards in 2013. Verlander is permitting a hit an inning, something he has not done since his breakout year in 2006. His past suggests he could return to his usual productive ways at any moment and this is typically a sendoff point for him.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels • 8-4

The tall, lanky Halos hurler is back from a broken left elbow and is expected to do what he throughout his career, win nearly two out three decisions (102-53 record). This premier starter works all four corners of the strike zone like a surgeon.

C.J. Wilson, Los Angeles Angels • 14-1

Interesting to note there are four Anaheim starters on this list, thus if history is a predictor of the future, the Halos could have a monster June. A little hesitant at first being an ace when Weaver was injured, the left-hander looked more comfortable as time wore on and at least looked the part. Has owned this month.

BAD JUNE PITCHERS

Jeremy Guthrie, Kansas City Royals • 3-10

After setting a Kansas City franchise-record with 17 consecutive starts without a loss, Guthrie was roughed up the latter part of May and seen his ERA begin to return to career norms. Unless the Royals offense displays the ability to score like they did in sharp 17-10 start to the season, it is going to be difficult to back Guthrie.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies • 5-12

The Phillies’ left-hander has already lost more games (8) than all of last season (6). After a rocky start, Hamels’ ERA has been in the mid-four’s since late April and though run support has been an issue from time to time, his yo-yo performances have made a bad situation worse. Hamels’ unusually high ERA at home (5.35) is what has really hurt him and finishing above .500 could be quite a task.

Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians • 5-10

Playing on his best team since joining Cleveland, Masterson is trending positively. The Jamaican-born sidearm pitcher is at career-lows in batting average allowed and WHIP and if he can surpass the problems he’s endured in past June’s, he is setting himself up for a fine campaign.

Brian Matusz, Baltimore Orioles • 4-13

Has only been used in relief by Baltimore this season and appears to have found a niche as a non-starter.

Ricky Nolasco, Miami Marlins • 5-12

The Corona, CA native is statistically having his best year since 2007, when he was 15-8 with a 3.52 ERA. Unfortunately, Nolasco can’t be expected to come close to matching the same win total, playing for an abysmal Marlins outfit. He has to be considered prime acquisition material for a contender before the season heads too much further down the road.

Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers • 5-10

Unlike Nolasco, Sanchez has been saved from Miami, pitching for Detroit. More comfortable in his first full season in MoTown, Sanchez’s 5-4 record does not indicate how well he thrown for the Tigers. His previous negative numbers figure to be in the past with a championship contender.
