HOW THE ONCE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN

Vladimir Guerrero signs with indy-league Long Island Ducks
By Dayn Perry cbssportsline.com

Former major-league great Vladimir Guerrero has signed with the independent-league Long Island Ducks. FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal first reported the news, and the team has since confirmed.

The 38-year-old Guerrero hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011, although last season he held workouts for a handful of interested teams. Across 16 seasons in the bigs, Guerrero owns a batting line of .318/.379/.553 with 2,590 hits; 449 homers and 477 doubles to his credit. In a related matter, Guerrero also has a defensible hall-of-fame case.

It certainly seems likely Guerrero's major-league career is over for good and all, but the man clearly wants to continue playing baseball. Nothing wrong with that.

Rickey Henderson officially retired in 2007. However he played his final major league game in 2005 with the San Diego Surfdawgs of the Independent Golden Baseball League. This was the SurfDawgs' and the Golden Baseball League's inaugural season, and Henderson helped the team to the league championship. In 73 games he had a .456 OBP, with 73 walks while striking out 43 times, and 16 steals while being caught only twice. It would be his final professional season.

I love Vlad's free swinging style - still never seen anyone else get a single on a pitch that bounced in front of the plate....hit it on the bounce and golfed it through the infield - LOL
