Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a soggy sports Sunday......

13) UConn wanted to give an elite basketball recruit a scholarship, but they're down three scholarships for various reasons, so they didn't have one to give. What happened? One of their walk-ons, who had been given a scholarship, is having it taken away, since it was miraculously discovered that he is eligible for financial aid, which could include loans. Terrific.

12) On a normal Saturday night in August, there are 345 arrests in New York City; last night, there were 45. All you need to decrease the crime rate is a tropical depression or two, and some evacuations.

11) Giants-Jets play Monday night in the Swamp; Big Blue plays again on Thursday against New England. Would expect the starters to play lot in the Jet game, and not very much at all Thursday night.

10) Tipoff on the last weekend of exhibition games is that none of them are on network TV, which means the networks know they're bad games, plus its Labor Day weekend, so less people watch TV anyway.

9) Detroit is 21-8 when Justin Verlander starts, 52-52 when anyone else takes the mound.

8) Twins had scored two or less runs in six consecutive games before they got four against Verlander Saturday. Go figure.

7) James Loney has eight homers this season, six against Colorado.

6) Carlos Gonzalez had knocked in a run in 11 consecutive games before he got blanked Sunday; he had 21 RBI in those 11 games. Colorado won Sunday in large part because of a great catch Gonzalez made in RF.

5) Phillies are 20-6 in Roy Halladay's starts this season, the best winning percentage by any team in any one pitcher's starts this year.

4) Temperature has been 100+ in 24 of the Rangers' 69 home games.

3) Raiders were 8-8 LY; 6-0 in their division, 2-6 outside it; just hard to describe how weird that is. Over last eight seasons, only the Lions have a worse record than Silver and Black. Both figure to be improved in 2011.

2) Some of my friends in the south weren't too happy with the amount of media coverage Hurricane Irene got, seeing as it was a Category 2, then a Category 1, then tropical storm, compared to Katrina in 2005, which was a Category 5 storm that was completely devastating to an entire region. Something about media and an eastern bias, which is a popular theory, and not just in the south.

By the way, it is quite serious in Vermont, where they have some of the worst flooding they've ever had. We wish them well.

1) Vin Scully announced Friday night that he'll be coming back next year for his 63rd season behind a Dodger microphone. Good for him.

Monday's six-pack

Highest yearly salaries amongst starting pitchers and the year their current contract expires........

$24M-- Cliff Lee, 2015-- Phils are jogging to another NL East title.

$23M-- CC Sabathia, 2015-- What happens if he opts out this winter?

$22.9M-- Johan Santana, 2013-- Injured, probably out until March.

$20M-- Roy Halladay, 2013-- Worth every penny, but lot of pennies.

$18.3M-- Carlos Zambrano, 2012-- Why GMs get fired........

$18M-- Barry Zito, 2013-- ......unless your team wins World Series.

$17.3M-- Jake Peavy, 2012-- Would be better off in San Diego.

Haven't really tried testing pics so thought I'd give one a go for Spooky and Friends.

Women are Angels.
And when someone breaks our wings, we simply continue to fly...
Usually on a broomstick but we're flexible like that
