------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Syracuse at Georgetown: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Syracuse Orange at Georgetown Hoyas (-1, 121)

With all the turmoil surrounding Big East basketball, it seems fitting there is a regular-season finale between Syracuse and Georgetown with a title on the line. The fifth-ranked Hoyas can clinch at least a share of the crown and a possible No. 1 seed in the conference tournament when they host the 16th-ranked Orange on Saturday in the 89th meeting between the rivals, their last before Syracuse joins the ACC and Georgetown helps establish the new Big East with the rest of the Catholic 7.

The Hoyas lost a chance to clinch at least a share of the league title when they fell at Villanova on Wednesday, snapping an 11-game winning streak and falling into a tie with Louisville and Marquette, both of whom will play later Saturday. At the same time, Syracuse was in the process of ending its three-game slide with a 78-57 win over DePaul. The Orange enter in a three-way tie for fourth with Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, only one of which will earn the coveted two-day bye at the conference tournament in Madison Square Garden.

TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (23-7, 11-6 Big East): During their three-game skid, all against ranked opponents, the Orange shot 39.5 percent from the floor and had more turnovers than assists. In bouncing back against the last-place Blue Demons, some of the offensive numbers remained ugly, or even worse. However, Syracuse's defense stepped up, forcing 18 turnovers, recording 12 blocks and posting a 47-38 advantage on the glass. James Southerland made all 11 of his free throws en route to 22 points, C.J. Fair added 16 and Brandon Triche chipped in 15.

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (23-5, 13-4): Star forward Otto Porter Jr. led the Hoyas with 17 points in the loss to Villanova. However, he was just 2-for-9 from 3-point range and contributed to the sloppy performance from Georgetown, which had a season-high 22 turnovers. Even more glaring was the massive discrepancy at the free-throw line, where the Hoyas had 34 fewer attempts (42-8) than the Wildcats. Head coach John Thompson III indicated his team was not lacking in motivation. "We needed this game, also," he told reporters. "We're playing for a championship. That's something just as important. We were desperate coming into this game, also."

TRENDS:

* Orange are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.
* Hoyas are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games.
* Under is 4-0 in Orange’s last four vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
* Road team is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings.

TIP-INS:

1. According to Elias, the last time a top-5 team took at least 30 fewer free throws than its opponent was March 1, 2008, when Texas Tech took 43 foul shots, compared to 13 for No. 5 Texas.

2. Due to two wire-to-wire efforts and a double-overtime game, Porter is averaging 42 minutes over his last four games. He had 33 of Georgetown's 57 points in a win at Syracuse on Feb. 23.

3. Triche has missed 12 straight 3-pointers.

Duke at UNC: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels (-1.5, 153)

Ryan Kelly was still rehabbing a foot injury while P.J. Hairston was making his debut as a starter the last time North Carolina played Duke on Feb. 13. When these bitter rivals meet again in Chapel Hill to close out the regular season Saturday, Kelly and Hairston will likely square off against each other in a game that still might have ACC regular-season title implications for the fourth-ranked Blue Devils.

While Duke needs a win and Miami to also lose to Clemson on Saturday to grab a share of its 23rd regular-season title, one of the main reasons the Blue Devils are even in a position to contend is because of Kelly’s dramatic return against the Hurricanes one week ago. The Tar Heels are 6-1 – with the only loss coming against Duke – since Hairston became a regular starter prior to the first showdown with Duke. The Blue Devils have won six of the last eight meetings, including their 73-68 victory in February.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT DUKE (26-4, 13-4 ACC): Seth Curry scored 20 points in Tuesday’s home win over Virginia Tech, extending the Blue Devils’ streak of at least one player scoring at least 20 to six games. Four different players have eclipsed the 20-point mark over that stretch, with Curry doing so four times. With 18 more points, he will reach 2,000 for his career. Mason Plumlee, the only starter not to reach the 20-point threshold over the last six games, is five blocks away from becoming the third Duke player (joining Shelden Williams and Mike Gminski) to top 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 200 blocks in a career.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (22-8, 12-5): The insertion of Hairston (13.6 points) into the starting lineup has led a slight increase in field goal percentage during conference play (plus-3.9), but the biggest change has come beyond the arc. The Tar Heels are shooting 42.3 percent from 3-point range since his promotion, a seven-percent increase from the team’s first 10 ACC games. Hairston is also averaging 17.5 points over that span, but the biggest beneficiary may be Reggie Bullock (14.4 points, 6.4 rebounds). The 6-7 junior has recorded three double-doubles in that time – matching the same number he managed over his first 90 career games.

TRENDS:

* Tar Heels are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games overall.
* Under is 5-0 in Tar Heels’ last five overall.
* Road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Blue Devils are 5-1 ATS in their last six trips to UNC.

TIP-INS:

1. Neither team has won both regular-season meetings in the same season since North Carolina swept in the 2008-09 season.

2. Duke is 17-0 with Kelly in the lineup this season and has won 89.2 percent of its games when he plays – the third-highest winning percentage for a player in school history.

3. North Carolina has won each of its last seven home games by double figures.

Sunday's Tip Sheet

March 9, 2013

While the majority of the men’s college basketball mid-major conference tournaments are already underway, this Sunday marks the final day of the regular season for all the majors including the Big Ten. The biggest matchup on the slate pits No. 2 Indiana against No. 7 Michigan in what could very well be a preview of next Sunday’s Big Ten Tournament’s championship game. The following is a handicapping guide for that game as well as a brief look at few other Big Ten matchups on Sunday’s schedule.

Big Ten Game of the Day

No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers vs. No. 7 Michigan Wolverines (CBS, 4:00 p.m. ET)

Indiana had already earned at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title, but its chances for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament took a slight hit this past Tuesday with a 67-58 loss to Ohio State as a 7 ½-point home favorite. The Hoosiers are now 1-2 straight up in their last three games and 0-3 against the spread. They are 25-5 SU overall and 13-4 in conference play, but the cracks have been apparent with a 5-3 SU (4-4 ATS) record in their last eight games. The total stayed UNDER the 141 ½-point line against the Buckeyes and it has now stayed UNDER in four of their last six games.

Behind Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo, Indiana remains one of the favorites to win a national title, but both will need to be at the top of their game on the road against the Wolverines. Zeller leads the Hoosiers in both scoring (16.5 points) and rebounds (8.0) while shooting 57.3 percent from the floor. Oladipo is chipping-in another 13.7 points and hitting an incredible 63.1 percent of his shots from the field. Overall, Indiana is ranked third in the nation in scoring (81.1 points) and shooting 49.1 percent from the field.

Michigan has also had its share of problems over the past month or so with a 5-4 SU record in its last nine games that started with an 81-73 loss to Indiana on Feb.2 as a 5 ½-point road underdog. It has gone a costly 1-8 ATS during this stretch and the total has gone OVER in six of the nine games. Despite these struggles, the Wolverines are still in position to claim a share of the Big Ten regular season title with a win on Sunday as a result of a 12-5 record in the conference. They are 25-5 SU on the year but just 13-14-1 ATS.

Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. have been the driving force behind Michigan’s success this year with Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III coming up big in a supporting role. Burke leads the team in scoring with 19.1 points a game and is shooting a rock-solid 49.2 percent from the field and all four players are averaging at least 11 points a game. The Wolverines have been almost as potent as Indiana on offense with 75.6 points a game and they are holding their opponents to 62.3 points on the other end of the court which all but equals the Hoosiers average of 61.9 points allowed.

The home team in this matchup is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five games. The Hoosiers have covered in 14 of the last 19 games.

Big Ten Best of the Rest

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes (ESPN, 12:30 p.m. ET)

Illinois will probably need to go pretty deep in next week’s Big Ten Tournament to secure a spot in the Big Dance, but a win on Sunday would also help its cause. The Fighting Illini are currently 8-9 in conference play and 21-10 SU (11-16 ATS) overall after losing two of their last three games. They are 0-4 ATS in their last four outings and the total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games.

Ohio State has continued to enhance its position for the postseason with quality wins over teams such as Michigan State and Indiana down the stretch. The Buckeyes are holding down fourth-place in the Big Ten standings, but could still claim a share of the regular season title with a win on Sunday and some help. They are 22-7 SU (15-11-1 ATS) this year and 15-2 SU (9-6 ATS) on their home court. The total has stayed UNDER in their last four games.

Illinois stunned the Buckeyes 74-55 in early January as three-point home underdogs with the total staying UNDER the 143 ½-point line.

Northwestern Wildcats vs. No. 10 Michigan State Spartans (Big Ten Network, 6:00 p.m. ET)

The Wildcats are going to need a miracle run to an unlikely Big Ten Tournament title to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament considering they have an overall record of 13-17 and just four SU victories in conference play. They are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games and 13-14 ATS overall and the total has stayed UNDER in six of those 10 games. This past Thursday’s 66-59 loss to Penn State as a five-point home favorite extended Northwestern’s current losing streak to seven games.

Michigan State is another team that remains in contention for a share of the regular season title with a 12-5 SU record in Big Ten play. It is coming off a huge 58-43 victory over Wisconsin as a five-point home favorite. The Spartans are now 16-1 SU (6-7-1 ATS) at home this season and 23-7 SU (12-13-2 ATS) overall. They have gone 5-2-1 ATS in their last seven games and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games.

This will be the first meeting this season, but the Wildcats actually beat Michigan State 81-74 as five-point home underdogs the last time they played.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Belmont 70, Murray State 68 OT-- Game of the Day, as Bruins won OVC tourney in their first year in league- they've now won 18 of their last 20 conference tournament games.

-- Amare Stoudemire needs his knee scoped, will be out for six weeks, so he will probably miss the rest of the regular season.

-- So Joe Flacco gets $20M a year but Anquan Boldin gets offered a cut in pay? That should go over well in the Ravens' locker room next year.

-- Cleveland Browns ($47.2M), Cincinnati Bengals ($41.7M) have most room under salary cap, with NFL free agency starting on Tuesday.

-- NCAA tournament is coming to Madison Square Garden for first time in over fifty years when they host the East Regionals next March.

-- Duke 69, North Carolina 53-- One of the worst games of the day, just a complete butt-kicking. Tar Heels had been playing very well.

*****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

13) San Diego State-Boise State was a physical, chippy game; these same teams will play in the 4-5 game at the MWC tourney in Las Vegas Thursday, the midnight game. Both teams deserve to be in the NCAAs, but that midnight game Thursday might be the game of the day.

12) First round of the Sun Belt tournament is weird; everyone is in Hot Springs, AR, but games are played in two different gyms at same time. I'm watching the Troy State game and without a word, they switch to the end of the South Alabama game. I liked that they try to show us everything, but it did confuse me some, which these days isn't all that difficult.

11) Memphis beat UAB by 15, finished 16-0 in Conference USA; it does not matter what league you're in, finishing unbeaten is an accomplishment to be proud of- they had to beat Southern Miss, UTEP twice each.

10) Valparaiso 70, Green Bay 69-- Top-seeded Crusaders trailed 68-64 with 0:10 left, but stuck two treys in last 0:08, including one at the buzzer to send the home crowd home happy. Bitter loss for Green Bay.

9) Kentucky 61, Florida 57-- Gators didn't score for last 7:36, as Wildcats probably got the marquee win they need to make field of 68.

8) CBS showed Florida-Kentucky at noon, UCLA-Washington at 2:00, then Notre Dame-Louisville at 4:00; why make west coast teams play an 11:00 am local tipoff, instead of 1:00? Makes very little sense.

7) Georgetown 61, Syracuse 39-- Orangemen head to their last Big East tournament 1-4 in their last five games, 5-7 in their last twelve.

6) These upsets all happened in the 6-8 timeslot Saturday:
-- Fresno State 61, UNLV 52-- Bulldogs swept the Rebels this season.
-- Air Force 89, New Mexico 88-- Improved Falcons are 17-12.
-- Baylor 81, Kansas 58-- This score defies description.

5) UNLV's loss puts them in the noon local time game Thursday against Air Force, which will hurt the home attendance and get them a much tougher opponent- Princeton offense is a pain to defend, and Rebels didn't fare well against Air Force this year, splitting a pair, with the win in OT.

4) Halftime score: TCU 44, Oklahoma 22-- Sooners rallied, lost by 3; if you are a bubble team, you cannot lose to TCU in March. Hard to defend in a meeting room when your name comes up in front of the committee.

3) I'd be curious to know the politics involved with Italy coming to Arizona to play in the WBC, with the Cuban team going to Asia; did the Cubans not want to come to America, and risk having players defect?

2) Little tired of hearing NYC media types complaining about all the injuries the Knicks are having. This just in: older players get hurt more, and no one has an older roster than New York.

1) They don't move the clocks ahead in Arizona, so on Saturday night it is a two hour time difference between them and the east, but for the next six months, they're three hours behind. Have no idea why that is true, but it is.
