Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Doug Fister, Detroit Tigers (10-13, 2.94 ERA)

Fister will be the team’s No. 2 starter in the playoffs and he deserves the spot behind Verlander. Since coming over from the Mariners, Fister is 6-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 59 1/3 innings. Despite a fastball that tops out in the high 80s, the righty has 46 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings with the Tigers.

"I've never thrown hard," Fister told reporters. "When I have tried to focus on getting strikeouts, it doesn't work for me. So I still take the mentality that I'm going to try to make them hit it, and hopefully, the right contact comes out of it."

Jaime Garcia, St. Louis Cardinals (13-7, 3.45 ERA)

The Cardinals have won each of Garcia’s last four starts and he hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of those outings. All four runs the Mets scored with him on the hill last week were unearned and he also struck out five batters over 7 2/3 innings.

Slumping

Kevin Slowey, Minnesota Twins (0-7, 6.54 ERA)

Kevin Slowey had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning in his last outing, doing his best to pick up his first win of the season. Then everything fell apart again. He gave up five runs before getting the hook after 6/23 innings and has now allowed 16 runs over his last three starts.

"I think every win is important, not just for me, but for this team," Slowey told reporters. "I'm not going out there and trying to make sure that I get a win so much as we need to win games in here."

Chris Schwinden, New York Mets (0-2, 5.06 ERA)
The Mets have lost all three of Schwinden’s starts this season, but he is giving them a shot every time he climbs the hill. The rookie looked to be in good shape to pick up his first MLB win when he hit the showers with a 4-3 lead over the Cardinals. After allowed three runs over six innings, the bullpen blew it by allowing three more in the seventh.

Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOT TEAM: Arizona Diamondbacks

THIS SEASON: 93-66
LAST WEEK: 5-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Dodgers for three.

THE SKINNY: Give credit to the Diamondbacks for sticking to it, even after clinching the NL West. Losing with non-regulars in the lineup is no way for a fresh-faced team like Arizona to head into the playoffs, and the Diamondbacks have played like they’re not satisfied.

They closed Sunday’s action, having won four in a row, and six of the last seven. They headed into Monday’s series opener with Los Angeles, having allowed two runs or less in five of their last seven games.

Second baseman Aaron Hill, acquired from Toronto for the stretch run, has been a breath of fresh air, and only adds another weapon to their postseason arsenal. Hill enters Monday’s action with a .328 average.

COLD TEAM: Boston Red Sox

THIS SEASON: 89-70
LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Orioles for three.

THE SKINNY: Red Sox Nation is in panic mode as Boston headed to Baltimore for Monday’s series opener. The Red Sox entered September in a fight for the division crown with the Yankees, and are closing it in a wild-card fight with the Rays. Terry Francona’s crew was just 6-18 through Sunday in September, and it’s been a snowball rolling downhill.

Starter Jon Lester has lost his last three decisions, and closer Jonathan Papelbon has one save all month. Those are two key components to any meaningful run in the playoffs, should they hang on to win the wild-card.

OVER TEAM: Detroit Tigers

O/U THIS SEASON: 82-65-12
O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Indians for three.

THE SKINNY: We try our best to run from sports clichés here, but we can’t resist on this one, as the Tigers are clearly “a team that no one wants to face in the postseason.” After treading water through most of the summer, the Tigers turned it on late and did more than just win a bad division.

They cranked up an offense that had been so-so, and with the bats booming, combined with all-everything starter Justin Verlander, Detroit indeed may be one of the best value plays of the playoffs that start later this week.

Consider the fact that the Tigers entered Monday’s series opener with Cleveland, having scored eight or more runs nine times in September, and twice they scored 14 or more.

Sunday’s lineup vs. Baltimore featured four hitters with averages above .290, and both Victor Martinez (101) and Miguel Cabrera (103) have both topped with 100-RBI mark. The overs, as a result, have been flowing, and there’s a good chance it can continue vs. the playing-out-the-string Indians.

UNDER TEAM: Washington Nationals

O/U THIS SEASON: 74-78-6
O/U LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Marlins for three.

THE SKINNY: Clearly, many won’t be tuned into a season-ending series between Washington and Florida, which began on Monday. But for under players, it might be a way to sneak out a few nondescript wins before the year closes.

Washington, which took advantage of an already-clinched Phillies team last week, has shown some poise and precision on the mound of late, and it’s resulted in quite a few unders. Starters Chien-Ming Wang and Ross Detwiler defeated the wild-card hungry Braves on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, by a combined 7-1 score.

Listen, Davey Johnson’s crew has a long way to go, especially with the bats. But if nothing else, this staff has shown enough promise to think Nationals fans can head into the offseason with some optimism.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Monday’s best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers (-140, 8)

The Detroit Tigers are still eying home field advantage in the playoffs and are keeping their foot on the gas heading down the stretch.

They hammered out four home runs in Sunday’s 10-6 win over Baltimore that saw Miguel Cabrera hit his 29th homer of the season and go 2-for-3 at the dish. Detroit’s slugger now leads the AL with a .341 batting average, just ahead of Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez, who went 0-for-4 Sunday afternoon.

However, Cabrera left the game after seven innings with what the team described as “light-headedness.” As of now, it’s uncertain whether he’ll miss any time, but the club may give him a day off with the way the offense is going lately.

Detroit is averaging 8.4 runs during its current five-game winning streak and the Tigers have won 20 of their last 26 home games against Cleveland.

Pick: Tigers

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels (-130, 7)

C.J. Wilson will be Texas’ starting pitcher when the club plays its first postseason game, but first he’ll have a tune-up start Monday.
Don’t expect him to stumble before the finish line.

"Last year, we all experienced the circus atmosphere of the playoffs," Wilson told reporters. "There is a lot of flexibility and weird stuff happening. You have to stay in your own little bubble, stay as regular as possible and not make a big deal out of it."

Wilson isn’t making a big deal of his recent blister issues either. He had one pop on the middle finger of his pitching hand in his last start, but says he has learned to deal with blister problems. The lefty has allowed just five combined runs over his last five starts.

Pick: Rangers
