Music City Bowl

North Carolina State vs. Vanderbilt (-7, 51.5)

Public action set the tone in this game and it currently sits at a 2-to-1 bet count and 2-to-1 money position. Some respected money did back NC State at the +7.5 number giving it a slight nudge to 7, but the line has held pretty steady to this point. If late public wagering backs Vandy, then it’s possible that value could get back to where it opened.

Predictions
Frank Schwab: Vanderbilt 28, N.C. State 17

The Commodores' defense and home-field advantage will be tough to overcome. Sure, Vanderbilt likely wanted something a little more exotic in bowl destinations, but once the home crowd gets going it'll be a nice edge for the Commodores.

Graham Watson: N.C. State 24, Vanderbilt, 17
The way the bowl games have been going this season, I've learned to expect the unexpected. Vandy is basically playing at home, but I think N.C. State is going to be playing for fired coach Tom O'Brien. One final farewell for a coach, who probably shouldn't have been canned this season. N.C. State has more talent and it will show in this game.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Vanderbilt can beat a team with a winning record and notch program’s first nine-win season since 1915. The Commodores come in with a six-game winning streak that is longest in Southeastern Conference going into bowl season. N.C. State can make up for a season that cost coach Tom O’Brien his job by winning its third straight bowl and sixth in seven bowls.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

N.C. State: Glennon is considered one of the top quarterbacks available in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-6 Glennon is the only quarterback from the Atlantic Coast Conference to have all his team’s yards passing this season and one of only three in the BCS. He is 295 of 511 for 3,648 yards with 30 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He was sacked 36 times.

Vanderbilt: QB Jordan Rodgers. The younger brother of Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, he was benched a year ago in a Liberty Bowl loss. He rallied for his senior season by completing 59.5 percent of his passes and averaged 221 yards per game with 13 TDs and only five interceptions.

Vanderbilt has already made a fair amount of history this year. They've won eight games for the first time in 30 years and will go to bowl games in two straight seasons for the first time in program history. Both those numbers are pretty daunting, though it goes with the caveat that Vanderbilt has been bowl-eligible in consecutive season before and just never gotten selected.

Here's another one: If Vanderbilt beats N.C. State in the Music City Bowl today, it will mark the first time the Commodores have won nine games since 1915.

Since 1982, Vanderbilt has been invited to three bowl games - and all three have been in the state of Tennessee. This is the second trip to the Music City Bowl, with the first coming in 2008 (there was a Liberty Bowl appearance at the end of last season). Vanderbilt gets to play close to home, but that might not be the best motivation for a team that was probably hoping for a trip to a different city in the postseason.

About the Wolfpack: It's not unusual to see a bowl team with an interim coach, but mostly that happens after a coach has taken a better job, not a firing. Tom O'Brien was let go after a 7-5 season and replaced by Northern Illinois' Dave Doeren, but offensive coordinator Dana Bible will coach the bowl game. N.C. State has been a hard team to figure out all season. It beat Florida State in one of the major upsets of the season, but also had days like a 33-6 loss to Virginia. Senior quarterback Mike Glennon, who passed for 3,648 yards this season, will try to end his college career with a victory.
