UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin has consistently moved the chains this season. He ranks second in the FBS behind Arizona’s Ka’Deem Carey for number of rushes gaining 10 yards or more (54 to Carey’s 58) and number of rushes to gain a first down (52 to Carey’s 56).
Franklin has gained 648 of his 1,700 yards (38 percent) after contact this season. He has gotten stronger as the game progresses, averaging four yards after contact per rush in the fourth quarter, compared to 2.1 per rush in the first three.
Baylor’s Terrance Williams needs 236 yards to become the second 2,000-yard receiver in FBS history. He’s had one game in his career with that many receiving yards- earlier this season against West Virginia.
Williams leads FBS with 32 receptions of at least 20 yards, nine more than any FBS player. He’s five receptions away from 100 this season. He’ll likely end up the all-time leader in yards-per-catch among receivers with at least 100 catches in a season. He’s currently averaging 18.6. The record of 16.7 was set by Troy Edwards of Louisiana Tech in 1997.
The Holiday Bowl bills itself as "America's Most Exciting Bowl Game," and these two teams can deliver. Baylor's offense, led by quarterback Nick Florence, is first nationally with 578.8 yards per game and the Bears are fifth in scoring at 44.1 points. UCLA is led by running back Johnathan Franklin and quarterback Brett Hundley.
Baylor senior quarterback Nick Florence, who replaced Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, against UCLA's defense. Florence leads the nation in total offense with 387.7 yards per game. UCLA's defense has allowed at least 27 points in each of its last four, including consecutive losses to Stanford. The second loss to the Cardinal was in the Pac-12 championship game.
This is the first meeting between the teams. ... The over-under for combined points is 81 1/2. ... Baylor rebounded from a four-game losing streak in the middle of the season to win four of its last five, including its final three games. Among them was a 52-24 upset of then-No. 2 Kansas State, derailing the Wildcats' hopes for a national championship.
While many are still recovering from the bad beat in the Cincy/Duke game (or still cheering) it's time to move on to three more bowl games for today--
Louisiana-Monroe (8-4) opened the season with a stunning 34-31 win over then-No. 8 Arkansas on Sept. 8. Though the Razorbacks proved to be vastly overrated, the Warhawks went on to show they could indeed compete with bigger programs, losing to Auburn and Baylor by a total of eight points in the following weeks.
Louisiana-Monroe then went 7-2 to close the regular season and earn its first bowl appearance since joining what would become the FBS in 1994.
