Raymond Felton scored a season high 27 points and Steve Novak added 18 off the bench as the NY Knicks mauled the Miami Heat 112-92 at the American Airlines Arena. Playing without an injured Carmelo Anthony, Felton shot 10/20 (50%) overall and dished out 7 assists driving to the bucket against penetrating one on one coverage. Novak drained 7/13 (54%) from the floor including 4/9 (44%) from 3 point range as the Knicks broke open a halftime tie outscoring Miami 59-39 in the second half. Tyson Chandler and JR Smith each contributed 13 points. Chandler also grabbed a team high 9 rebounds while Smith collected 6 despite shooting only 4/15 (27%) from the field. NY made 45% of their shots including 18/44 (41%) beyond the arc. The Knicks made eight 3-pointers in the third quarter alone, the most by any NBA team in any quarter so far this season. Despite struggling from the foul line (12/19 63%) they outrebounded the Heat 46-43 and committed only 7 turnovers. Lebron James just missed a triple double but led Miami with 31 points 10 rebounds and 9 assists. Dwayne Wade added 13 but shot only 3/13 (23%) from the field. James tried to rally the troops on his back shooting 11/20 (55%) overall but lacked support from his teammates. Chris Bosh contributed 12 points on just 3/12 (25%) and Udonis Haslem chipped in with 10 along with 7 rebounds. Miami shot only 42% overall including 6/16 (38%) from 3 point land and 22/28 (79%) from the charity stripe. They also committed 21 turnovers. Anthony needed five stitches to close a cut on the middle finger of his left hand. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra devoted most of his postgame remarks to the theme that Miami has to "own" its shortcomings right now, and how they would be addressed starting in practice on Friday. It was the Knicks' 5th straight win moving 1.5 games ahead of Miami who dropped its' second straight.
OJ Mayo scored 23 points while Darran Collison and Brandan Wright each added 16 as the Dallas Mavericks edged the Phoenix Suns 97-94 at the US Airways Center. One day after rumors swirled that Dirk Nowitzki may miss the entire 2013 season, the Mavericks used a 23-4 run to open the second half as Mayo shot 9/17 (53%) overall including 3/5 (60%) from 3 point range. Mayo also collected 5 rebounds and dished out 5 assists despite committing 6 turnovers. Collison drained 10/12 (83%) from the free throw line off the bench while Wright sank 8/12 (67%) from the field. Chris Kaman finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds on 7/12 (58%) overall in just 21 minutes. The Mavs shot 47% overall and were clutch from the charity stripe (19/24 79%) despite committing 17 turnovers. Dallas also outrebounded Phoenix 44-42 and held the Suns to just 40% shooting from the floor. Goran Dragic and Markieff Morris each led Phoenix with 15 points while Luis Scola added 13 along with 9 rebounds off the bench.
