Yankees make offer to Kevin Youkilis

The Yankees have made a one-year, $12-million offer to free-agent third baseman Kevin Youkilis, reports MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. Our Insiders have confirmed. It was previously reported by YES Network's Jack Curry that Youkilis would be willing to consider a one-year pact provided that dollars were right. This rumored offer would seem to satisfy that particular criterion. CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler reports that the Indians are also in the mix for Youkilis's services.

Youkilis, age 33, is coming off a season in which he hit .235/.336/.409 for the Red Sox and White Sox.

It's Alex Rodriguez's hip surgery that's necessitating the Yankees' search for a stop-gap third baseman, and the recent signing of Eric Chavez by the Diamondbacks may have prompted them to make an especially bold move for Youkilis.

There's no guarantee that Rodriguez, upon his likely mid-season return, will be able to resume playing third base. Even if he is, however, Youkilis could slide into the DH role and occasionally spell Mark Teixeira at first.

I think this is a decent pickup but if his numbers are on the decline the Yankees well overpaid. Looking into the future if they are not willing to spend anything more than the $189M cap in 2014, we may see high profiled players like Robinson Cano bolt for free agency.

Its going to be interesting to see how the Yankees pull of Cano with some high priced players affecting the payroll for the near future. Thinking maybe they could do a back loaded and deferred type payment deal like Wright got..

I think youk is the only option even if they over pay for him. He can play 1st and 3rd and still has a good glove
