Armadillo's Write-Up

Sunday, December 2

-- Clemson lost last two years to in-state rival South Carolina by total of seven (4-3) points; young Tigers (11 frosh/sophs) got pounded at home by Purdue last game- they won only road game by 17 at Furman. South Carolina got whacked at St John's last game, but they got PG Ellington back from football team. Gamecocks haven't beaten anyone ranked higher than #171-- Clemson is #55.

-- Saint Louis team will be mourning following passing of its coach last night; Billikens are disappointing 3-3- foes have made 51% of their 3's so far- they've played #54 schedule. Valparaiso is 5-1, winning at Kent St. in OT, losing by hoop at Nebraska. Atlantic 16 home faves are 10-17 vs spread. Horizon League road underdogs are 12-6.

-- Cal Bears are 6-0, winning Anaheim tourney and also winning by 11 at Denver, but best team they've beaten is #83 Ga Tech. Bears have NBA guard in Crabbe. Wisconsin is struggling without PG Gasser- they're 4-3, losing last game at home to Virginia after losing to Creighton in Vegas, on neutral floor. Pac-12 single digit road underdogs are 8-6 vs spread.

-- Big week for Middle Tennessee, winning Sun Belt opener, after school announced they were moving "up" to C-USA. Blue Raiders are 5-1, with road wins at UCF/ULL- only loss was to Florida. Akron lost opener in OT to Oklahoma State; they're 2-2 vs D-I teams- both losses were OT games. MAC single digit home favorites are 4-8 vs spread.

-- Maryland won last five games since 72-69 loss to Kentucky in its first game; Terps won by 20 at Northwetern last game, for best win this year. Not often George Mason gets a shot at one of local bigboys; they're 5-2 vs #40 schedule, beating Virginia by, losing to New Mexico by point on neutral floor. ACC single digit favorites are 14-8 against the spread.

-- Wichita State is 7-0, with six wins by 12+ points; only loss by less was by hoop at VCU, its best win/only true road game so far. Shockers use subs for 40% of minutes, so altitude shouldn't hurt. Air Force lost by 15 at Colorado, only team they played ranked higher than #277. MVC non-conference road favorites are 6-1 against the spread.

-- Denver is playing 4th straight top 100 team, losing last three by 11-7-11 points; Pioneers are 0-2 on road, losing by 7-11 points- they scored 15-17 points in first half of those games. Stanford lost three of last five games, but losses were all to top 50 teams. Cardinal are shooting 27% from arc so far. Pac-12 home faves of less than 15 points are 15-3.

-- Cal-Fullerton is 0-3 on the road, losing by 13 at Stanford, 3 at Nevada, 4 at Eastern Washington, game they were favored to win. Washington is 3-3 and still hasn't played road game, though last four opponents are all in top 70. Huskies are making 42% from arc but aren't forcing many turnovers. Big West road underdogs are 20-11 vs spread this season.

-- Manhattan is turning ball over on 35% of possessions, worst rate in country; they're 2-3, beating teams ranked #306/250- their losses are all vs top 100 teams, so #170 George Washington falls in between. Jaspers scored 65-67 points in wins, less than 60 in losses. GW is 3-3, winning last game by point over JMU. MAAC favorites are 8-2-1 vs spread.

-- Niagara is 2-3, 0-2 on road, losing at Oregon State by 19, Iona by 11; Purple Eagles play high-scoring games-- average total in their six games is 161.2. Central Michigan is 2-3 vs D-I teams, losing by 17 to Bradley in only home game; Chippewas are 0-3 when allowing more than 55 points. MAC non-conference home underdogs are 2-6 vs spread.

-- Boise State is 5-1 after 83-70 win at #11 Creighton last game; Broncs' only loss was by 4 at Michigan State, so they're pretty good, ranking #30 in country in eFG%. Seattle is turning ball over 27% of time; they're 1-2 vs D-I teams, beating Montana State by 15 in its only home game. WAC underdogs are 16-14 vs spread, 3-4 at home.

Trojans Visit Cornhuskers In Monday College Hoops Matchup

USC Trojans at Nebraska Cornhuskers
College Basketball Betting Preview
Date: 12/03/2012 at 8:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: USC -1, O/U 116
Television: Big Ten Network

USC Trojans: A very short college basketball card on Monday finds Southern Cal (3-3 straight-up, 2-3 against the spread) on the road and hoping to stop a two-game skid in the early going. The Trojans fell 66-60 at home to San Diego State eight days ago, and shooting woes can be blamed for the setback as small 2-point home dogs. The game followed a tough trip to Hawaii for the Maui invitational where they lost two of three, and SC could be towing a four-game losing streak if not for a rather ugly 59-53 overtime victory vs. Texas. Southern Cal is shooting just over 40 percent as a team, and the primary culprits are guards JT Terrell and Jio Fontan, who have combined to convert just 35 of their 128 field goal attempts (27.3 percent). Three of the Trojans' four games this season have gone "over" the total despite the poor offensive showing.

Nebraska Cornhuskers: Coach Tim Miles brings the 'Huskers (5-1 SU, 3-2 ATS) home off a solid upset at Wake Forest last week. Nebraska was getting five from the oddsmakers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and posted a 79-63 triumph behind 20-point efforts from both Andre Almeida and Ray Gallegos. Almeida also grabbed 11 boards for his first double-double of the campaign. Senior guard Dylan Talley leads the Cornhuskers in scoring (15.8 points per game) and is second in rebounding (6.5 rebounds per game) while sharing the assist lead (3.0 assists per game) with freshman Benny Parker. Southern Cal has a slight 5-4 lead in this series, which dates back to the early 1960s, but Nebraska has won each meeting the last three seasons, including a 64-61 double-overtime victory in LA last year as a 2-point underdog. The last two games for the Cornhuskers have skipped above the same 128-point total, but the last time the Trojans came to Lincoln, the final failed to reach a 121½-point mark.

No. 6 Syracuse favored big over EMU Monday

EASTERN MICHIGAN EAGLES (5-1)

at SYRACUSE ORANGE (5-0)

Tip-off: Monday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Line: Syracuse -24.5, Total: 119.5

The Eastern Michigan Eagles will look to hang with No. 6 Syracuse in a tough road test at the Carrier Dome Monday night.

The Orange are coming off a fast-paced 91-82 win against Arkansas in which they improved to 3-0 ATS on the season, but needed forward James Southerland to hit 9-of-13 three-pointers to do so. The Eagles play a slower brand of ball, averaging just 62.0 PPG (278th in Division I) and are 5-1 to begin the season, but they have yet to play a major conference foe to test their skills.

Can Syracuse win by such a large margin? For the answer, connect to College Basketball Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season The StatFox experts are a collective 52% ATS (90-83-5) in college basketball Best Bets for the season, led by StatFox Gary, who is 6-2 ATS in the past eight days and 61% ATS (19-12) for the season. StatFox Dave is at 53% ATS (32-26) for the season after going 58% ATS (26-19-1) since Nov. 17. StatFox Brian is 4-1 ATS (80%) in the past three days to even his season mark to 50% ATS.

Southerland is coming off a career-high 35 points but has had a solid season all around, averaging 19.2 points, 1.6 blocks and 1.4 steals per game for the Orange. And at 6-foot-8, he presents matchup problems when he steps onto the perimeter. Carter-Williams and Southerland are just two Syracuse players averaging double-digit points though, with Brandon Triche (15.6 PPG, 2.2 SPG) and C.J. Fair (11.2 PPG, 5.6 RPG) rounding out the crew. Carter-Williams and Triche are nasty defensively on the outside, combining to average 6.0 SPG. But Boeheim will also need strong performances from interior players Rakeem Christmas (6.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG), who is coming off a scoreless night at Arkansas, and DaJuan Coleman (5.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG) to step up and battle the boards against Riley. The Orange rank 20th in the nation in rebounds (42.2 RPG).

Three Eagles average double-digit points, led by dangerous swingman Daylen Harrison (14.2 PPG, 7.0 RPG) who is often forced to play on the block, but possesses the skill set of a guard at 6-foot-6. He's shooting well from all areas of the floor with 52% FG, 40% 3-pt FG and 86% FT. He is regularly their best scoring asset, but Derek Thompson (12.8 PPG, 43% 3-pt FG) and Glenn Bryant (10.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG) are also potent. Freshman Jalen Ross could also be a surprise weapon, averaging a team-high 3.3 APG despite playing just 19.8 MPG. And if Riley can assert his size in the paint, Eastern Michigan might just hang tight with this Orange squad that may just overlook this opponent.

Big East Teams Highlight Jimmy V Classic On Tuesday

Texas Longhorns vs. Georgetown Hoyas
College Basketball Betting Preview
Date: 12/04/2012 at 7:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: NA
Television: ESPN

Texas Longhorns: Madison Square Garden is once again the site for the Jimmy V Classic, where the Longhorns (5-2 straight-up, 2-3 against the spread) meet the Hoyas in Tuesday's opening tip. Texas dropped two of three at the Maui Invitational just before Thanksgiving, including an embarrassing 86-73 loss to Div-II Chaminade, a 16½-point underdog. The 'Horns rank 31st in the country, pulling down 40.7 rebounds per night, and are paced on the scoring end by sophomore Sheldon McClellan (17.0 points per game).

Georgetown Hoyas: Coach John Thompson III brings the Hoyas (5-1 SU, 1-3 ATS) into this matchup off a 37-36 home win vs. Tennessee last Friday. Laying 7½ in the contest, G'town lost the rebounding battle 35-27, missed five of its nine free throws and netted just 1-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc. The Hoyas are shooting better than 48 percent from the field on the season despite that ugly win, with scoring leader Greg Whittington (12.7 ppg) one of four players averaging in double figures.

North Carolina State Wolfpack vs. Connecticut Huskies
College Basketball Betting Preview
Date: 12/04/2012 at 9:00 p.m. (ET)
Opening Lines: NA
Television: ESPN

NC State Wolfpack: A preseason Top 10 team, the Wolfpack (4-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) dropped to 18th in both polls before last week's 79-72 loss at Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. NC State was a 5½-point underdog in the contest and outscored by 10 at the free-throw line and 27-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. The 'Pack and Huskies have split their four previous meetings, with the two most recent matchups coming in the Round of 32 of the 2002 NCAA Tournament (a 77-74 UConn win) and same round of the 2005 event (a 65-62 NC State victory).

UConn Huskies: This will be the first appearance in the Jimmy V Classic for Connecticut (6-1 SU, 1-3 ATS), but the 108th time the Huskies have played at MSG, where they are 57-50 all-time as longtime members of the Big East. UConn had a rather lackluster showing against New Hampshire last week, posting a 61-53 victory in the unlined affair that saw the Huskies miss 13 of their 14 long-range shots and shoot under 37 percent overall. Shabazz Napier leads Connecticut with 18.6 ppg while Ryan Boatright chips in an average 13.7 along with a team-best 4.9 assists per game.
