Friday's six-pack

Six worst bowl games so far this season......not based on how I did

-- Oklahoma State 58, Purdue 14-- Game was over at the coin flip.

-- Georgia Tech 21, USC 7-- Another stellar coaching job by Lane Kiffin.

-- Syracuse 38, West Virginia 14-- Bowls weren't meant for snowy days.

-- Virginia Tech 13, Rutgers 10 OT-- If a close game makes this list, you know it was a terrible game.

-- Arizona State 62, Navy 28-- Rough year for service academies.

-- Baylor 49, UCLA 26-- Bruins sagged after upsetting USC.

To know me by now. I always buy the point. Its a no brainer for the most part. Some of the lines may be listed from 2-3 weeks ago when I originally played the game but anytime I can get the benefit of the doubt I do.

As I have always said, baseball we lay -130 or -140 and dont think twice about it. Michigan, Wisconsin are just a couple other games that were benefited by buying the extra point. If the line is on the half I usually buy 1.5 points. If its on the whole I just buy 1 point. Always with the totals and most times with the sides.

And for those that say you are creating too much vig to overcome, think about basketball lines and how often the game comes down to that 1 or 2 points. I dont believe in teasers though since if you are wrong about your pick then you are wrong about the pick and no sense to tease a play that may not be the right pick anyway. imo

My biggest screw ups this bowl season are gonna haunt me though. Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Texas A&M we had the right side based on the system and I went the other way. There is not 1 game that I decided to change that worked out in my favor so I guess at some point I need to learn a lesson. If you stuck with the numbers, power rankings and system you would of had an unreal season. And I think we did well anyway.

Didn't realize your record was so crazy. Only 2 losses in that many games for NCAA Basketball?

  • 01/06/2013 10:42 AM

Not as crazy as it seems. Lots of money lines. Just using it as a monitor and showing how you can make money if you play it smart. I dont base those numbers on anything that I do for a living so it really doesnt have to represent anything other than showing how you can engineer a profit while having fun. I have had some great seasons the past couple of years except for last years baseball season where as I usually do really well in baseball, JimmytheGreek put the voodoo curse on me and I didnt do well at all last season. lol

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

13) I wonder how many people turned off an NFL playoff game because Christian Ponder wasn't playing last night; Joe Webb got thrown into a bad situation, and the predictable 24-10 Packer win resulted. Ugly game; NFL would've been better off with the Packers winning last week and Chicago making the playoffs. But the Express was riding the Packers regardless and cashed the ticket.

12) Read some complaints during the day that, given the poor quality of play Saturday, the last thing the NFL needs is more teams in the playoffs. Not sure I agree with that, but they were an interesting comments.

11) Cincinnati Bengals are now 0-6 in road playoff games, after a 19-13 loss in Houston; you allow one TD, you should win. You score one TD and kick four FGs and still win, then you were fortunate.

10) Marvin Lewis hasn't won a playoff game in ten years as the Bengals' coach, but before you bury him, consider that in the 11 years before Lewis became Cincinnati's coach, the Bengals were 52-124. He has done a terrific job working for a cheapskate owner.

9) Biggest college basketball upset Saturday: St John's (+13.5) 53-52 win at Cincinnati. Good win for Steve Lavin's struggling team.

8) Delaware won 84-72 at struggling Old Dominion; Blue Hens made 41-50 foul shots. Not sure I've ever seen the visiting team take 50 foul shots in a 40-minute game. ODU was 20-34 at the charity stripe.

7) There were 1,017 field goals tried in NFL's 256 regular season games, most in league history.

6) Clippers raced out to a 35-12 first quarter lead, pounded Golden State by 26, avenging a loss earlier in the week.

5) Big Ten Network needs better announcers; too much hype. Don't want lot of yelling and guys telling me how great everything is. I already have the game on; stop selling it to me, and let me watch.

4) Carolina Panthers kept Ron Rivera, which isn't surprising; once they let John Fox go, you know they like to work on the cheap, so they're not going to pay Rivera to go away. Plus, Panthers won their last four games, to finish 7-9; do they have momentum going into 2013?

3) Illinois State is 0-3 in MVC after losing at home to Northern Iowa; Pitt is 0-2 in Big East after losing at Rutgers. Couple of teams who had promising Decembers but are now very hungry for a conference win.

2) Illinois whacked Ohio State 74-55; wire-to-wire thrashing. Surprising result. Doesn't appear to be any dominant teams this year.

1) Ole Miss' win in Compass Bowl clinches a winning bowl season for the SEC; they're 5-3 with Monday's Alabama game left to play.

Here are the current College Bowl Results for 2012/2013 on the Bowling for Dollars Spooky thread

Heading into the final game and the BCS Championship game here are all the standings for this years Bowl Express. Last year I went into the BCS Championship game having Alabama as my Game of the Bowl Season. We came away with an easy winner and topped off a great year. This year unfortunately it is probably one of the weakest selections of the bowl season so even at this point I am not sure what I am doing. That said............all these numbers are directly from this thread. Basically the numbers are just a guide for the most part and relative to what and how you or I may have played. All the totals are based on 1 unit since some were more or less and contingent on the side play. The sides are always and will always be the stronger play than the total since my bowl system recognizes the team and not the total. So you can base a unit on a side as about 2-3 units. The totals are basically 1/2 - 1 units . In addition many of the plays may get posted on the thread for action purposes since I make a selection for every game although there really may not have been a definitive play for that game. But its for fun and entertainment purposes only so why not have fun with bowl season.

Believe it or not the system has done better than my posted plays since I screwed up on a couple games and went away from the system. The numbers pointed to Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and Texas A&M. That is 4 winners that I never posted and to make matters worse I went against 3 of them. Just plain stupid. Hopefully anyone that followed saw the power rankings and ran with them more than running with me.

Lots of work go into this thread and totally enjoy posting. Hopefully some of you guys will return the favor and post here at the forum all year long. Cheers!

Monday's six-pack

In my opinion, the six best coaches in the NFL.......

6) Mike McCarthy, Packers-- Wins consistently in league's smallest market; maybe being in a small market is an advantage.

5) John Fox, Broncos-- Got to Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme at QB, went 8-8 with Tim Tebow, now has Peyton Manning. Lucky him.

4) Mike Shanahan, Redskins-- This was his best non-Elway season; would his son/OC leave his dad for a head coaching job?

3) Sean Payton, Saints-- Got suspended for a year, then got a huge raise.

2) Bill Belichick, Patriots-- Won three Super Bowls, all by a FG; since he was found to be a cheater, zero titles, losing two Super Bowls to........

1) Tom Coughlin, Giants-- Won two Super Bowls with Giants, but his best work was done with the expansion Jaguars in late 90's.

Monday's BCS Dirty Dozen: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

12) College Basketball Ref James Breeding has already worked 34 games in 21 different states this season. That a lot of different states.

11) Redskins had total of 74 yards in their last eight drives; biggest issue facing Robert Griffin III as he moves forward in his career will be his ability to stay healthy. Otherwise, Redskins are set at QB for next 10-12 years.

10) What a year the Colts had; their HC is found to have leukemia, but they overcome that and make the playoffs, but then interim coach/OC misses their playoff game after getting taken to the hospital the morning of the game, supposedly with an inner ear infection. Amazing season for them.

9) You don't think the layoff before a bowl game is excessive?

Colts-Vikings-Bengals have all played seven games since the last time Notre Dame played a game.

8) PGA Tournament in Kapaula was supposed to start Thursday; they actually played a little Friday/Sunday, but winds have been so strong, they stopped play both days. They'll try to play 36 holes Monday and 18 more Tuesday. Next week's tournament is Hawai'ian Open, so golfers don't have too far to go for the next event.

7) Buffalo Bills hired Syracuse coach Doug Marrone as its new coach; no idea if he'll do well or not (he did well rebuilding at Syracuse), but no way is his hiring going to sell a lot of tickets in western New York.

I know the goal is to win games and that ultimately sells the most tickets, but you look at the Bills and wonder if they know what the hell they're doing.

6) Speaking of which, Eagles were anxious to dump Andy Reid, but have yet to replace him. If they don't land Chip Kelly, where they going to look?

And if they do sign Kelly, then who is their QB going forward?

5) If I had to pick a college basketball Final Four right now, I'd probably go with Michigan-Louisville-Duke-Minnesota. Luckily for me, there are lot of games left between now and Selection Sunday (10 weeks).

4) You see a Virginia player dribble from the wing to basket for a layup in last 6:00 of a close game, and you realize that this Tar Heel team is going to be fortunate if they win a game in NCAA tournament. There is no presence in the middle of the North Carolina defense to discourage opponents.

3) GoDaddy.com Bowl might be a minor bowl, but being one of few good TV viewing options on a Sunday night in January has to be big advantage for Kent State/Arkansas State during heart of recruiting season.

2) If you took the eight starting QBs in the NFL this weekend and had a draft, wouldn't Joe Flacco be the 7th guy taken??

1) NHL and Players' Union finally came to an agreement; supposedly, the season will start January 19. Thats kind of fast; hope they're not rushing the start of the season, at the expense of getting the players in shape.

They're saying a 48-game regular season, then full set of playoffs. Curious to see what DirecTV charges for the Center Ice package.
