TCU vs Texas Thanksgiving GameDay Thread

Welcome everyone to the week long pregame coverage of Thanksgiving football!

I am your host Cole Ryan and I will be here leading up to kickoff

Unlike the Saturday and Sunday morning pregame show, we are trying something different for the Thanksgiving football schedule!

We have threads up for all of the games on Turkey day. As the week progresses we will add all of the information that we can find from around the league. This information will help bettors try and find a winning angle to make money on Turkey day!

Feel free to chime in with who you think will win and why. The idea is to share information and picks and join together to get some winners for turkey day!

If this does well we can do it every week for the midweek games, so let us know what you think.

Thanks for your input in advance and let’s find some winners!
Cole

New Rivalry on Turkey Day

Texas has a new rival. Or make that an old one.

With the breakup of the annual Texas-Texas A&M rivalry after more than 100 years, the No. 18 Longhorns will face Big 12 newcomer TCU on Thanksgiving night in a renewal of an old Southwest Conference grudge match.

And the Longhorns (8-2, 5-2) acknowledged Monday that not having the Aggies to knock heads with anymore feels kind of weird.

"I miss it a lot," senior free safety Kenny Vaccaro said. "I wish we could play them one more time."

Although the Longhorns and Aggies could still meet in a bowl, the annual rivalry ended last season, Texas A&M's last in the Big 12. Texas won the last game 27-25 on a last-second field goal.

"We ended it the way we needed to end it," junior strong safety Adrian Phillips said.

Unlike most of last season's second half, the Longhorns are playing much better down the stretch. They've won four straight since back-to-back losses to West Virginia and Oklahoma, piling up 609 yards of offense Nov. 10 in a 33-7 rout of Iowa State.

"Offensively we've been pretty good overall," coach Mack Brown said. "... Our defense was what was really, really poor, and I think we're improving as a team because our defense is improving. And I think the reason they're improving is they're playing with more confidence."

TCU's defense, on the other hand, has given up 38.3 points per game while losing three of its last four. It fared better against then-No. 3 Kansas State on Nov. 10, but the offense produced nothing until less than seven minutes remained in the fourth quarter of a 23-10 loss.

Texas starts what will potentially be a new Thanksgiving rivalry when it hosts Texas Christian, their first meeting as members of the Big 12 Conference. The No. 15 Longhorns have played 75 games on Thanksgiving, including 64 - and the last four years - against Texas A&M. But the Longhorns' series with the Aggies ended with Texas A&M's defection to the Southeastern Conference. Texas, which finishes its regular season at Kansas State on Dec. 1, has won four straight since its 63-21 loss to Oklahoma on Oct. 13. The Horned Frogs are coming off a 23-10 loss to the then-No. 1 Wildcats on Nov. 10 and have lost three of their last four games.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Texas -8

ABOUT TCU (6-4, 3-4 Big 12): The Horned Frogs have been plagued by turnovers with 11 in their last four games. Coupled with TCU's penchant for penalties (21st-most in the country at 7.2 per game), the Horned Frogs have made life difficult on themselves. Trevone Boykin, who took over at quarterback after Casey Pachall left school to deal with substance abuse, has eight interceptions, but has been brilliant at times with four touchdown passes in back-to-back games - a school record. Running backs Matthew Tucker and freshman B.J.Catalon combined for 108 yards on 18 carries against Kansas State and will try to exploit the nation's No. 98 rushing defense. TCU's defense is 16th in the country at 326.3 yards allowed.

ABOUT TEXAS (8-2, 5-2): Sophomore quarterback David Ash has responded well to being pulled from the Longhorns' 21-17 victory at Kansas on Oct. 27. He has completed 72 percent of his passes and thrown for five touchdowns in the last two games, and was 25-of-31 for a career-high 364 yards in the Longhorns' 33-7 victory over Iowa State on Nov. 10. Ash's two primary targets are deep threat Mike Davis (45 catches, 18.6 yards per catch - fifth in the nation, seven touchdowns) and underneath option Jaxon Shipley (40, 12.5, five). The Longhorns have allowed 15.3 points per game in facing three of the four worst scoring offenses in the Big 12 in the last three contests after yielding 45.6 in their previous five.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Texas will be the fourth team TCU has faced this season which did not play the week before. The Horned Frogs are 3-0 in such games with victories over SMU (24-16), Baylor (49-41) and West Virginia (39-38 in double overtime).

2. TCU, which will play on Thanksgiving for the first time since 1928, has won 46 straight games when rushing for more yards than passing.

3. Texas leads the series 61-20-1 and has won the last four meetings, including 34-13 in 2007. The Longhorns and Horned Frogs were members of the Southwest Conference and met every season from 1927 until the league disbanded in 1995.

TCU coach Gary Patterson used those programs to measure how the Horned Frogs could compete for conference titles. Although the Frogs surprised many by winning the MWC title that first season in 2005, it took three more seasons before Patterson's blueprint for the league really kicked into gear. The Frogs finished their seven-year stint in the league with three consecutive titles from 2009-11, going a combined 6-0 against BYU, Utah and Boise State, which entered the league in 2011.

The move into the Big 12 raised the bar even higher, but it still comes down to two head honchos: No. 16 Texas (8-2, 5-2) and No. 13 Oklahoma (8-2, 6-1).

"If you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best," Patterson said Tuesday during his media luncheon. "If you want to win the Big 12 title, as a general rule, it's gone through Austin or Norman."

Patterson has said repeatedly that TCU's first few seasons in the Big 12 would be a learning process. After a couple cycles through the league, the Frogs will tweak their recruiting needs, how they practice and how they travel for games. And on a talent basis, the Frogs' final four games -- especially the last two against Texas at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and against Oklahoma on Dec. 1 -- provide the best evaluation on what TCU needs to do in the off-season.

"If you want to win the conference title consistently, you better find a formula to be able to beat those two football teams," Patterson said. "Anybody who would argue different than that needs to go to the doctor because they're not right. It was going to be a measuring stick, and it is."

TCU coach Gary Patterson said he relishes playing at night and the national exposure a game such as this provides. Playing at night typically means your team is winning and on national television, he said, which helps recruiting.

"I said before the season ... that developing depth was going to be the key and the only way to do that was to recruit. And the best way I know to recruit is to be on national TV," Patterson said. "Now I will say this, I think it's great to be on national TV if you play well, you win, or you play well and you lose. It's not if you get blown out. Up to this point we've played well, either won or played well and lost by a close margin. As we get through the season with Texas and Oklahoma we have to be able to do the same thing."
