Tale of the tape: Panthers at Eagles
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Offense

Cam Newton has come under fire during his sophomore season - both for his performance and his perceived indifference to it all. The former Heisman Trophy winner is struggling, but could find the waters smooth against a battered Eagles pass defense. Newton has formed a nice bond with tight end Greg Olsen, who has scored in two of his last three games versus Philadelphia. The Panthers are an uncharacteristic 16th in rushing yardage after racking up more yards on the ground than any team in the NFL since 2008.

With the outcome of last Sunday's game no longer in doubt, LeSean McCoy carried the ball in the waning moments and suffered a concussion that will sideline him versus the Panthers. McCoy and quarterback Michael Vick (concussion) will watch rookies Bryce Brown and Nick Foles continue in their place. Foles tossed interceptions on his first two possessions versus Washington and the game quickly unraveled after that. In addition, wide receiver Jason Avant (strained hamstring) and running back Chris Polk (sprained toe) also will not play against the Panthers.

Edge: Panthers

Defense

Panthers DE Greg Hardy, who has seven sacks this season, is dealing with an undisclosed illness and is considered questionable. Linebacker Jordan Senn is doubtful with an ankle injury for a stop unit that ranks in the middle of the pack in most defensive categories.

The Eagles' pass defense has surrendered 11 touchdown passes and hasn’t recorded an interception over the past four weeks. Opposing QBs have rung up a gaudy 143.6 passer rating against Philadelphia over that span.

Edge: Panthers

Special teams

After firing special teams coach Brian Murphy and replacing him with Richard Rodgers, the Panthers’ special teams struggled again Sunday in the loss to Tampa Bay. The unit failed on a fake punt attempt, and Captain Munnerlyn lost a fumble on a punt return in the contest. After making his first seven attempts this season, including a 5-for-5 performance at Chicago, kicker Justin Medlock has missed his last three field-goal attempts.

The Eagles don't have a kickoff return longer than 31 yards or a punt return longer than 20 yards this season. Punter Mat McBriar is tied for fifth in the league in with a 48.5-yard gross average, but the special teams unit as a whole has been downright awful in Philadelphia and it doesn’t look like things will improve this season.

Edge: Tie. Both teams are equally as bad.

Word on the street

“A lot of the players on defense have been turned over since I left, so I won’t have as great a feel for their defensive personnel as I would have. But as far as a general feel for what the atmosphere is going to be like and what they like to do, yes.” – Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott after being asked if his previous experience serving on the Philadelphia coaching staff will give his defense an advantage Monday night.

“These guys are all competitors and that’s one of the inherent problems with concussion management — they want to play. They know the consequences and everything, but they want to play. We know he’s anxious to go out there and play but we have to be careful with these guys.” – Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder on Michael Vick’s concussion.

Nets try to extend win streak Wednesday in Boston

BROOKLYN NETS (9-4)

at BOSTON CELTICS (8-6)

Tip-off: Wednesday, 7:35 p.m. ET
Line: Boston -4.5, Total: 191.5

The Nets are looking for another statement win in the Atlantic Division when they head into Boston on Wednesday night.

Brooklyn just won its biggest game on the young NBA season on Monday against cross-town rival New York, prevailing 96-89 for its third straight win (SU and ATS) and eighth victory in 10 games (7-2-1 ATS). Boston is also hot with back-to-back wins (SU and ATS) over Oklahoma City and at Orlando, scoring 112.0 PPG in those two victories. Rajon Rondo’s double-digit assist streak is still alive and well at 37 straight games -- nine shy of Magic Johnson's record -- but he’ll need help from the rest of his team if the Celtics are going to take down this surging Nets squad.

Which team will extend its winning streak on Wednesday? For the answer, connect to NBA Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. The experts have started the week on fire, going a collective 9-3 ATS (75%) since Monday with StatFox Brian going 3-0 ATS and StatFox Gary going 2-0 ATS on Tuesday. This season, the experts are a collective 82-75-8 ATS (52.2%) in NBA Best Bets. StatFox Gary leads the way at 62% ATS (13-8-2) Best Bets for the year, as he's currently on an 8-3 ATS run. StatFox Scott is 4-1 ATS over the past four days and is at 58% ATS (21-15) Best Bets for the season. For NBA Totals, StatFox Scott is 17-4 (81%) since Nov. 11, boosting his incredible season mark to 30-9 (77%) on NBA Totals. Gary is a perfect 6-0 in Totals in the past four days.

The Nets grinded out an impressive victory over the Knicks on Monday night in a playoff-like atmosphere in Brooklyn. C Brook Lopez (19.2 PPG) had 22 points with season-highs in rebounds (11) and blocks (5). PF Reggie Evans continued his brilliant work on the glass (8.5 RPG in 18.4 MPG) pulling in 14 rebounds total and six on the offensive end. PG Deron Williams, who has struggled with his shooting (39% FG, 26% threes), is finding other ways to win games for his team, averaging 10.4 APG over the last five contests, including a season-high 14 assists versus the Knicks. If Joe Johnson can get himself going (15.2 PPG on 39% FG) then this Nets team could improve on their mediocre 95.6 PPG this season (18th in NBA).

Rondo is having a career year, averaging 13.5 PPG, 13.7 APG and 1.9 SPG on a career-high 52% FG. SF Paul Pierce is also having himself a quality season, averaging 20.1 PPG and 5.4 RPG. He is still the main scoring option for this Celtics team, but he is shooting better from three-point land (43.1%) than from inside the arc (42.7%). Still, Pierce will be relied on heavily versus Brooklyn, a team he's scored 21.6 PPG against in 52 career meetings. PF Kevin Garnett isn’t the player he used to be, but is still having a decent season, averaging 15.9 PPG and 7.4 RPG. He is the heart and soul of the Celtics defensively. Jason Terry is still looking to find some consistency in Boston. He is averaging only 11.0 PPG early on in the year, but is capable of performing at a much higher level, considering he's averaged 16.1 PPG in his career.

Wednesday's Tips

November 27, 2012

The Wednesday NBA card is loaded with 11 games to wager on, including four key contests with plenty of storylines. The Thunder will welcome in old friend James Harden as the Rockets invade Oklahoma City, while the Bulls try to rebound from Monday's meltdown against the Bucks. We'll begin with an Atlantic Division battle from Boston.

Nets at Celtics - 7:35 PM EST

Brooklyn is fresh off a victory over cross-town New York in overtime on Monday, as the Nets go for their second win over the Celtics this season. The Nets finished off their homestand at a perfect 3-0 SU/ATS, while holding each opponent to less than 89 points. The Celtics go for their second winning streak of three games on Wednesday after beating the Thunder and Magic.

The last time the Celtics faced the Nets at Barclays Center, Boston fell short in a 102-97 defeat as Rajon Rondo missed the game with an ankle injury. The C's managed to 'push' as five-point underdogs, while the 'over' of 190 ½ was never in doubt thanks to 109 points scored in the first half. Boston attempts to extend its winning streak to five games over Brooklyn at TD Garden, as the Celtics have won each of the last three home meetings by double-digits.

The Nets begin a three-game road trip which extends to the Sunshine State starting Friday in Orlando. Avery Johnson's club has won just two of five away contests this season, while cashing just once in three tries as an underdog. Brooklyn is rolling for 'under' bettors by hitting in five of the last six games, as the Nets own a 4-1 mark to the 'under' on the highway.

Mavericks at Bulls - 8:05 PM EST

Chicago squandered a 27-point lead in Monday's one-point defeat to Milwaukee, falling to an incredible 0-7 ATS at the United Center this season. The Bulls go for their first home cover against a Mavs' squad that is coming off Tuesday's two-point defeat at Philadelphia. Dallas has struggled to cover numbers this season at 6-9 ATS, including a 3-4 ATS mark away from Texas.

The Bulls returned from their annual Circus trip with a 2-3 SU/ATS record, with victories at Phoenix and Milwaukee to start and finish the stand, respectively. However, Chicago couldn't complete the home-and-home sweep after Milwaukee's bench helped spark a 31-4 run in the second half to erase a 78-51 deficit. Chicago's offense has failed to bust the 100-point mark in seven home games, while cashing the 'under' five times.

Dallas continues to play without leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki, but the defense is suffering as the Mavs allowed at least 100 points in 10 of the previous 11 contests. Rick Carlisle's team has drilled the 'over' in five of seven games with the total listed at 195 or below, as Wednesday's total opened at 191.

Knicks at Bucks - 8:05 PM EST

Since starting 8-1, New York has dropped three of the last four games to fall into a first-place tie with Brooklyn atop the Atlantic Division. The Knicks were tripped in a back-and-forth overtime affair on Monday against the Nets as short road favorites, while scoring the fewest points in regulation (84) this season. Now, New York travels to Wisconsin for a matchup with a Bucks' team trying to maintain momentum from Monday's massive rally.

We chronicled earlier how Milwaukee overcame a 27-point deficit to shock Chicago, the first win in 10 tries against the Bulls. Brandon Jennings didn't contribute much during the comeback as he was still suffering from an ankle injury that came in the final minute of last Saturday's home loss to the Bulls. The point guard scored just six points on 2-for-9 shooting, while backcourt mate Monta Ellis tallied just 10 points on Monday. Scott Skiles' club has covered just once in five games this season at BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The Knicks actually played better defensively in Monday's overtime loss as Mike Woodson's squad allowed less than 100 points for the first time four contests. New York is not a team to back when playing away from Madison Square Garden, going 1-4 ATS the last five road contests. Both meetings in Milwaukee last season finished 'over' the total, as each game had a total listed at 200 or higher.

Rockets at Thunder - 8:05 PM EST

Days before the season, James Harden turned down a contract extension from Oklahoma City and was shipped to Houston in a megadeal. The defending Western Conference champions acquired Kevin Martin (among others) and haven't skipped a beat with an 11-4 SU and 9-5-1 ATS record. Harden returns to OKC on Wednesday to lead his Rockets on the second of a back-to-back following Tuesday's home blowout of the Raptors.

Houston has dialed up its scoring recently by topping the 100-point mark in six of the last eight games, while hitting the 'over' six times in this stretch. Harden is the driving force by leading the Rockets at 25.2 points per game, including a combined 51 points in home victories over the Bulls and Knicks. Since picking up underdog victories at Detroit and Atlanta to start the season, the Rockets have lost each of their last four games away from Toyota Center.

The Thunder annihilated the Bobcats on Monday in a 114-69 rout as 11 ½-point home favorites. OKC allowed just 24 points in the first half, while grabbing a 54-point advantage in the third quarter. Scott Brooks' team is picking up plenty of covers lately by posting a 5-1 ATS record the last six contests

NBA Notebook

November 26, 2012

Betting Recap

The most-wagered NBA game of last week was a potential Finals preview as Oklahoma City visited Boston for the only time this regular season, and the result was by far the book's top win of the week.

The Thunder were beaten 108-100 on Friday due largely to 22 second-half points from Boston's Paul Pierce. Boston led by 14 with under 10 minutes left, but the Thunder were able to close within 3 late. However, Kevin Durant missed a potential tying 3-pointer and then Boston pulled away. It was the first time that Boston's Jeff Green had faced his former team; Green came over in the Kendrick Perkins trade two seasons ago from OKC but missed all of last year. Green was clearly motivated Friday with a season-high 17 points off the bench.

Oklahoma City closed as a 3-point favorite and took more than 86 percent of the action. At -150, the Thunder garnered nearly 90 percent of the lean. Bettors fared well on the total with nearly 60 percent on the over 197.

So while the Thunder were terrific for the book Friday, they were the bettors' biggest win of the week, following the night in Philadelphia. Behind 37 points from Durant, OKC won 116-109 in overtime. The Thunder are a terrific 19-3 after a loss since the start of last season, including 4-0 this year. And they are 5-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season. Oklahoma City closed as a 4.5-point favorite versus the Sixers and took almost 93 percent of the action. At -180, OKC took more than 98 percent.

The biggest moneyline lean of the entire season came in Sunday's San Antonio-Toronto matchup. The Spurs took literally almost every moneyline bet in that game at -265. They escaped with a 111-106 double-overtime victory. The game made some history as it was the first double-OT game in the shot clock era (since 1954) in which each of the first five periods was either tied or decided by a single point.

The top player props wins of the week for bettors were: the Lakers' Dwight Howard over 20.5 points Tuesday versus Brooklyn; the Rockets' James Harden over 22.5 points Friday against the Knicks; and the Thunder's Russell Westbrook over 20.5 points in the Philadelphia game.

One of the big stories of last week was the return of Timberwolves All-Star forward Kevin Love from a broken hand. And Love had quite a season debut, scoring 34 points to go with 14 rebounds in a loss to Denver. The book's top player prop result of the week was on Love two nights later in Portland as he finished under 24.5 points with 24. Love missed a jumper in the final seconds or else it would have been a big win for bettors.

Love's return hasn't helped Minnesota, which has dropped three straight with him and five in a row overall, failing to cover in any of those five after starting the season 6-1 ATS. The Timberwolves are hoping point guard Ricky Rubio can make his season debut in the next few weeks.

Early-Week Live Betting Preview

On Tuesday, the book will offer live betting on Dallas at Philadelphia and Indiana at the L.A. Lakers.

The Mavs have been able to tread water without superstar Dirk Nowitzki having taken the court yet this season. And Dirk isn't likely to make his debut off knee surgery until at least mid-December. Tuesday's game starts a very grueling stretch for Dallas as 16 of its next 23 games are on the road, including eight of the next 10.

The Sixers revealed some more bad news on center Andrew Bynum last week, saying the former Laker is now out indefinitely as he continues to deal with knee problems. Don't look for Bynum until at least mid-January at this point and it's quite possible he never takes the court this season. The good news for Philly is that point guard Jrue Holiday has emerged as an All-Star. In Sunday's win over Phoenix, he was 13 of 21 from the field for a career-high 33 points with 13 assists. Holiday was just the second Sixers player ever to have at least 13 made field goals and 13 assists in a regulation game, joining some guy named Wilt Chamberlain. Holiday is averaging 18.6 points and 9.2 assists this season.

The Pacers also can relate to playing without a star as small forward Danny Granger, the team's leading scorer, who is out until at least February with a left knee issue. Indiana badly misses Granger as it ranks No. 29 in the NBA in scoring (91.2 ppg) and field goal percentage (.413) and has the worst over/under record in the league at 5-9-0. Part of that can be attributed to Indiana's No. 3 scoring defense and that it is the top rebounding team in the league.

On Wednesday, the book offers live betting on Houston at Oklahoma City and Minnesota at the L.A. Clippers. The Rockets-Thunder matchup is the return of James Harden to OKC. Of course he was traded on the eve of the season to Houston when Harden and the Thunder couldn't agree on a contract extension. Harden is tied for fourth in the NBA in scoring at 25.2 ppg. He no doubt will be very motivated to torch his former teammates.
