Slumping Cardinals In LA To Face Struggling Dodgers

If the St. Louis Cardinals can qualify for the postseason, it looks like it won’t resemble how they did it a year ago when literally flying down the stretch to make up what was once a 10½-game deficit to the Braves in the NL Wild card race in late August.

Instead, this season the Cards appear to be hanging on for dear life as they ride on fumes in September while other contenders, such as the Dodgers, continue to flounder.

Appropriate then, perhaps, that St. Louis and Los Angeles get together for a four-game series this weekend at Chavez Ravine, maybe the tonic each needs to revive flagging playoff hopes. But only one of these sides can exit the weekend having picked up any momentum. The way each has been playing lately, a stalemate is more likely while the menacing shadows of Philadelphia and Milwaukee, each inhaling ground in the playoff chase over the past few weeks, move into more-serious wild card contention.

The first of the weekend set between the Redbirds and the Vin Scullys takes place Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, with St. Louis sending ex-Ole Miss Rebel Lance Lynn to the mound to face L.A.’s Josh Beckett. First pitch at the Ravine is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. (ET); those with satellite or extended cable packages can pick up the action on either Fox Sports Midwest or Fox Sports Prime Ticket.

Very early MLB odds made the Dodgers $1.30 favorites with a Game 1 total of 7½ runs priced to the 'under.'

Recent results indicate that neither of these teams appears in the mood for a sprint to the wire in these final three weeks of the season. Entering respective Wednesday games, the Cards had lost 10 of 14 (including 7 of the last 8 on the road) while the Dodgers had dropped 13 of their last 20. Yet, as of midweek, St. Louis still retained a one-game lead over L.A. for the final NL wild card spot, although the fading Pirates (still only three games back as of Wednesday) and the surging Brewers and Phillies (both just four games back at midweek) were rapidly entering the frame.

The Cards are rolling the dice that putting Lynn back in the rotation will provide a boost to a sagging staff that hadn’t delivered a quality start in 12 straight road outings prior to Adam Wainwright’s Tuesday effort in San Diego (where only two of the five runs he allowed were earned). Lynn has not started a game since getting drilled on August 24 at Cincinnati when allowing four runs and six hits in just two innings of work. His last six outings have all been in a relief role.

For the season, Lynn’s numbers don’t look so bad (14-7 record and 4.04 ERA), but note that much of the positive was accomplished in the first portion of the season when the Redbirds won the first six and 15 of Lynn’s initial 20 starts. Since June 19, Lynn has posted a subpar 5.97 ERA. He was also mostly ineffective in an early-season start at L.A., allowing four runs and nine hits in 6 IP of an eventual 6-5 St. Louis loss.

Of course, the Dodgers were playing a lot better in the first half of the season, too. But they have been in a steady descent since June and have yet to pull themselves of out of a nosedive in recent weeks.

Unlike the Cardinals, however, L.A.’s main problem in recent weeks has been at the plate, where they entered Wednesday’s game at Arizona having scored just 25 runs in their last 11 games. It hasn’t helped that star OF Matt Kemp has been in and out of the lineup the past week with shoulder problems; Kemp ended a recent 0-for-13 slump with a double in the seventh inning of a 1-0 loss to the D-backs on Tuesday night.

But the lineup problems have been widespread, as Los Angeles continues to suffer from a lack of reliable table-setters in a batting order that seems more interested in swinging for the fences and posting gaudy stats. Opposing pitchers, however, have been able to effectively pitch around the free-swingers in the lineup such as Kemp, Andre Ethier and the recently-added Hanley Ramirez.

All of the Dodgers’ recent trade maneuvers haven’t helped much, either, including the addition of Thursday’s starting pitcher Beckett, whose inclusion in the recent blockbuster deal with the Red Sox could turn out to be quite dubious for the Blue. Beckett has been ineffective in two of three starts since the move from Boston, and his numbers over the past month are revealing; his Bosox and Dodger teams have won just one of his last six starts, as he has posted a 6.69 ERA in those outings.

The series pattern this season, however, has favored the home team, with the Dodgers sweeping three at the Ravine in mid-May but then losing three in late July at Busch Stadium.

Yankees-Red Sox play rubber game Thursday

NEW YORK YANKEES (80-62)

at BOSTON RED SOX (64-79)

First pitch: Thursday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -145, Boston +135, Total: 9½

Tied with the Orioles atop the AL East, the Yankees will look to take the rubber game of their three-game set with the archrival Red Sox, who are out of contention and looking to play spoiler.

The Red Sox have been just dreadful lately, with losses in 12 of their past 14 games, a span in which they have reached five runs just twice. Felix Doubront takes the hill for Boston looking to reverse the team’s fortunes, but he’s been just as much of the team’s problem. He is 0-4 with an 8.27 ERA in his past seven starts, and has struggled even more in his past three outings with a 10.50 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 0-2 record. The Red Sox will face Phil Hughes, who has a 14-12 record as a starter in 2012 with a 4.13 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. He’s coming off a strong win against the Orioles and has won two consecutive starts in 2012 against Boston, combining for 14 innings and three earned runs (seven total runs) in those outings, both wins. Ultimately the Yankees excel against left-handed starters with a 31-22 (.585) record against them, and the Red Sox struggle against righties with a 39-58 (.402) mark, the fourth-worst such record in the majors. And given Boston’s woes lately, play on NEW YORK to take this one.

This rare five-star FoxSheets trend also backs the Yankees:

BOSTON is 9-28 (24.3%, -28.9 Units) against the money line in September games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was BOSTON 4.7, OPPONENT 6.0 - (Rating = 5*).

Hughes is 2-1 in his past five starts with a 2.81 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. He has given up the second-most homers in the majors (33), but has an excellent 3.6 K-to-BB ratio (141 K’s, 39 BB). In his career, he is 3-5 with a 5.84 ERA against the Red Sox, but those past two outings are encouraging. It also helps that he can rely on a bullpen with a 3.08 ERA and 24 saves in 29 chances (83%) on the road this year. Although 1B Mark Teixeira remains out (calf), the Yankees should have no problem beating this team in Fenway Park, where they are 6-2 already this season.

The Red Sox may have to play this game without Dustin Pedroia (wife pregnant), which could mean bad things for Doubront’s run support. Doubront has been quite good against the Yankees in his career, with a 1-0 record (team 2-1), 2.41 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 10.1 K’s/9 in three starts, all coming this year. However, New York’s 5.4 runs per game against southpaws could mean he is due to get hit around again. The Yankees offense is averaging 6.4 per runs over their past seven games, an output the struggling Boston lineup cannot match.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Rough day for the Big East Wednesday. Jim Calhoun is retiring on Thursday, ending a great coaching career. It ain't going to be easy to to replace him and keep UConn a top team.

-- Greedy bastard update: Notre Dame jumps from Big East to ACC for basketball, but of course they keep NBC's football money to themselves.

-- If I run NBC and am giving Notre Dame that much money, I'm telling them to either drastically upgrade their facilities or loosen their admission policies, in other words, I'm telling them to win more or get lost.

-- Cardinals got swept in San Diego, as smoking-hot Phillies moved within three games of the second Wild Card spot.

-- This was 11th time this season Kyle Lohse had 6+ IP, two or fewer earned runs and received a loss or a no-decision.

-- (Really) greedy bastard update: Price of gas went up a dime a gallon on Wednesday, from $4.06 to $4.16. These people are out of control.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our baseball List of 13.........

30) Astros—Slowly building up talent base; their teams in low minors are doing well this summer.

29) Rockies—They need five starting pitchers who induce a lot of ground balls. Otherwise, they’ve got very little chance, playing in high altitude.

??) Marlins—Such a depressing season that Showtime’s reality show bailed early on them. How do they go about getting better?

??) Red Sox—Fenway is logical landing spot for David Wright, when the Wilpons cry poor after next summer’s All-Star Game and refuse to sign their star long-term.

??) Mets—Speaking of which, how does a team located eight miles from the Bronx ballpark operate like a small market team? Shouldn’t former used car salesman Alan R. Selig be pushing them to spend some money?

8) Bronx—Friend of mine asked me if Girardi will lose his job if they don’t make playoffs. It’s a fair question.

7) Braves—Kind of cool that they’re heading to playoffs in Chipper Jones’ last season. They collapsed late last year, just like Boston, but unlike the Red Sox, they didn’t hit the panic button, and have been rewarded for it.

6) Angels—Still have six games left with Texas, which could throw AL race into chaos. Or Rangers could just knock Halos out of Wild Card race.

5) Giants—Starting pitching and good role players, like Marco Scutaro. Is Bruce Bochy the most underrated manager in baseball?

4) A’s— I could go on for a month about how much fun this season has been, but the job isn’t finished yet, and I'm very superstitious.

3) Nationals—So what exactly does Stephen Strasburg do the rest of the season; would they ever use him as a pinch-runner? Does he even dress for games? Does he go to games? Do they put him on the grounds crew? Make him a guest announcer? Will he go on road trips? Seriously, this is uncharted territory.

2) Rangers—They traded Edinson Volquez for Josh Hamilton; Reds cut their losses by trading Volquez for Mat Latos. As usual, the Padres are the losers in a trade.

1) Reds—They won’t be #1 on this list in October unless closer Chapman is ready to roll in the playoffs. Dusty Baker’s contract is up after year; would the Dodgers outbid Cincinnati for his services?

Wednesday's List of 13: Our first NFL List of 13........
32) Dolphins—Never a good thing when your best WR is your starting quarterback.

31) Browns—D’Qwell Jackson scored a defensive TD with 13:59 left to give Browns a 15-10 lead over Philly, but they kicked PAT instead of going for two points, which wound up as a fatal mistake when Eagles scored TD in last 90 seconds for 17-16 win. Basic strategy escapes some of these coaches. Its not good.

30) Colts—125+ Harvard students were implicated in a cheating scandalthat apparently includes two Harvard basketball players, including team’s star, who will withdraw from school then come back next year.

29) Bills—Speaking of Harvard, it probably wasn’t a great idea to throw a boatload of money at a QB (Ryan Fitzpatrick) who didn’t get a football scholarship to college. Big early season game for the perception of their program this week against a Chief team they beat 41-7 LY.

28) Rams—Played much better defense in Detroit, but a loss is a loss, and the meter is now running at 15-66 since ’07.

Very tough to do a ranking after one week; only 0-1 team listed here are the defending champs, who aren't one of the best eight teams.
8) Giants—Defending champs always get a mention in our first list of season, but they also usually win that first game. Giants were only team not to gain 20+ yards on any 1st/2nd down plays; all three of their explosive plays came on 3rd down.

7) Broncos—All those folks who speculated on Denver when spreads for whole season came out back in May are looking awful smart right now; if Manning keeps playing well, Broncos will become a public team.

6) Cowboys—Final tally on explosive plays in Week 1: 130, or 4.1 per team. 50 of 130 came on first down plays. Five teams had four explosive plays on 1st down; only one of the five who lost (Browns) played another team that had five big plays on first down.

5) Falcons—Most teams who score first eight times they have the ball win that day. Looks like new OC Dirk Koetter (former HC at Boise State/ Arizona St) will let Matt Ryan be more aggressive.

4) Ravens—Fast-paced, no-huddle offense is fun to watch. Remember that OC Cam Cameron played basketball in college at Indiana.

3) Texans—ESPN.com reports that since 1990, 38 of 64 teams (59%) that won by 20+ points in Week 1 made the playoffs.

2) 49ers—Can you believe Steeler DC Dick LeBeau turned 75 Sunday? If you put his pic next to mine, it might be hard to tell who is older, and I’m 52. LBeau was a very good defensive back for the Lions.

1) Patriots—I’m typing this up on September 11, 11 years after one of our country’s darkest days. Thanks to all the soldiers, police and firemen who help keep us safe.
