Sunday, September 18

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Ivan Nova, New York Yankees (15-4, 3.81 ERA)

Nova has been a quality-start machine of late, including five such outings in a row dating back to mid-August. In that five-game span he went a total of 33.2 innings and allowed only nine runs while striking out 23 batters. The big right-hander pitched 7 1-3 innings on Wednesday at Seattle and gave up just one run on five hits.

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants (11-10, 2.79 ERA)

The defending World Series Champions are storming back into playoff contention--albeit distant contention. Cain is not necessarily one of the big reasons for it because he never gets any run support, but he has certainly been carrying his weight. The right-handed has given San Francisco eight consecutive quality starts. In Cain's last four outings he has totaled 29 1-3 innings while allowing just seven runs on 18 hits and striking out 22.

Slumping

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (6-12, 4.36 ERA)

Danks was borderline on fire in June, July, and some of August, but he has been a wreck over his past three starts. In that span, the southpaw has pitched 15 2-3 innings and has allowed 21 runs (19 earned) on 26 hits. Danks last took the mound on Monday against Detroit and gave up 11 hits and eight runs in five innings en route to a 14-4 loss.

Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians (11-10, 3.20 ERA)

As Masterson's ERA suggests, he has been mostly effective all season long. His recent slide is not terrible, but the numbers are not what Cleveland has come to expect from the 26-year-old righty. Masterson has just one quality start in his last five trips to the mound and his past three outings have been especially mediocre. In 18 innings across three starts, Masterson has given up 23 hits and 18 runs. On Tuesday at Texas he lasted just five innings, giving up eight hits, three homers, and six earned runs.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Phillies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies

Hanging onto playoff hopes by a thread, the St. Louis Cardinals visit the National League East-leading Philadelphia Phillies in the third game of a four-game set on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

PLAYOFF SCENARIOS

The Phillies entered Saturday needing only a win or an Atlanta loss to clinch the NL East, and they clinched with a 9-2 win over St. Louis. The Cardinals need a lot more. After Saturday's results, the Cardinals (82-69) are 6.5 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central and 4.5 games behind the Braves in the Wildcard race. The Phillies may be lacking in motivation, as they have all but clinched home-field advantage in the NL playoffs by virtue of their 98-52 record.

ANGRY BIRDS

The Cardinals have their backs against the wall and are playing like it. That much was evident on Friday night, in a gutsy 4-2 win over the Phillies in 11 innings.

“It was a great example of what we’ve been doing,” St. Louis' manager Tony La Russa said after the win. “The guys were outstanding. We hung in there and got a great win.”

The Cardinals have revived their postseason dreams by winning eight of 10, including two against the Brewers and a three-game sweep of the Braves.

SUNDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

St. Louis has found a second home on Sunday Night Baseball. This week’s game marks their fifth appearance in primetime on Sunday this season and fourth since July 31.

La Russa can’t be complaining about that since his team is 3-1 and is outscoring opponents 18-10 on Sunday Night Baseball. The Phillies have been the opposite; they haven’t played a primetime game on Sunday since May 8 and they have lost their only two appearances on Sunday Night Baseball this season.

If the Philadelphia crowd seems distracted don’t blame them. Michael Vick and the Eagles face off against the Atlanta Falcons on NFL Sunday Night Football at the same times as this matchup.

HOLLIDAY BREAK

St. Louis cleanup hitter Matt Holliday will miss Sunday after injuring his right hand while taking practice swings in the on-deck circle last week. Holliday will be replaced in the lineup by Allen Craig, who went 0-for-8 against the Phillies on Friday and Saturday, striking out three times and leaving eight runners on base. Craig is 2-for-25 with eight strikeouts in his career versus the Phillies.

CARPENTRY

Chris Carpenter had his third rough outing in four starts on Tuesday when the hapless Pirates scored four runs on 10 hits against him in seven innings during a 6-4 Pittsburgh win.

That game was on the road where Carpenter has had most of his struggles. He is 5-6 away from St. Louis with a 4.49 ERA and host opponents are batting .286 against him. He faced Philadelphia back in June, going a solid seven innings allowing one run in a 12-2 St. Louis win at home.

COLE AS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PILLOW

Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels was tagged for four earned runs in five innings in a loss to the Astros on Tuesday.

It was an uncharacteristic outing for Hamels, who had given up three or less runs in his previous eight starts. Hamels leads the NL with a 0.98 WHIP and his 2.71 ERA is in Top-6 material. He has yet to face the Cardinals this season.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

- Albert Pujols is 8 for 17 in four games against the Phillies this season
- Cardinals are 10-2 in their last 12 vs. a team with a winning record
- Phillies are 10-4 in Hamels’ last 14 Sunday starts
- Cardinals are 4-0 in Carpenter's last four starts vs. Phillies
- Cardinals have won seven of last 11 against Phillies but have lost six of eight in Philadelphia

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Sunday’s best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs (-150)

For the first time in franchise history, the Astros are 100-game losers.

Houston reached the century mark in the wrong column on Saturday, losing 2-1 at Chicago. The team now stands at 51-100, by far the worst record in Major League Baseball. No other squad has more than 91 losses.

But there is some good news for the Astros, and not just that they are going up against a 67-85 Chicago team. Brett Myers is getting the start on Sunday and he has been on fire of late.

"I just try to go out there and get quality starts," Myers explained after a recent outing. "If I get a win, I get a win. I'm just trying to help this ballclub win games, but it's always good to get a win for myself, too."

Quality starts? Myers has done a whole lot better than that. He boasts a 1.19 ERA in 22 2-3 innings over his past three starts. The righty is also 5-1 with a 1.41 ERA in seven career starts at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs are countering with Ryan Dempster, who has been decent recently but far from great. Chicago has lost five of Dempster’s last six starts.

Pick: Astros

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (125, 8.5)

The Boston Red Sox are on the verge of a historic collapse. They had an eight-game lead in the American League Wild Card race earlier this month, and now division rival Tampa Bay is within three.

Despite beating Tampa Bay on Friday, Boston is still 2-8 in its last 10 games (and it still trails this series 2-1 having lost on Thursday and Saturday). The Rays, on the other hand, have won seven of their last 10.

Sunday’s pitching matchup does not foreshadow a turning of the tide.

For the Sox, Tim Wakefield has failed to deliver a quality start in five straight outings. For the Rays, David Price is enjoying a streak of seven consecutive quality starts. In this seven-game stretch, Price owns a 1.61 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 50 2-3 innings.

Pick: Rays
