Football dogs - spreads vs. M/L?

I've noticed some folks taking the dog on the spread and also the M/L to win (Ryan in particular has done it a couple of times)..my question is if you do that how much do you normally put on the M/L? Do you make it a normal size wager and the same as the spread bet so that you break even if they cover but don't win? Or do you make it a quarter or half of a regular play so you are still up if they cover?

Curious because I've never played like that but it worked great for Ryan with the Nevada play last week and I wasn't sure what you guys would normally do....

For me if I really like a dog on a scale of 1-10 say an 8, I would probably do 6 units straight and 2 unit ml or 5/3

Thanks - didn't really think it made sense to put the same amount on both and lose a good dog spread if they didn't win but I'm sure it makes for nice payoffs if you hit a few of the ML plays....
