Rangers at Yankees: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees (-119, 10)

Beating the Yankees in New York continues to be an arduous task for the Texas Rangers. The Rangers attempt to avoid their eighth straight loss at Yankee Stadium when the teams meet in Wednesday’s third contest of a four-game set. Nick Swisher has two homers and seven RBIs as New York posted victories in the first two games. The Yankees have a 1.5-game lead over Texas for the top record in the American League.

New York has won seven of eight games and its .595 winning percentage in third best in the majors behind the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds. The potent Texas offense leads the majors with 580 runs scored but has struck just twice in the series and was blanked on two hits by Hiroki Kuroda on Tuesday. Swisher hit a tiebreaking two-run homer and Mark Teixeira also went deep. Teixeira has homered in three of the last six games and is 6-for-15 against Rangers starter Scott Feldman. Texas maintained a six-game lead in the American League West as the Oakland Athletics also lost. New York is six games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, Fox Sports Southwest (Texas), YES (New York)

WEATHER: There is a chance of thunderstorms in the Bronx Wednesday night. The forecast is calling for a 61 percent chance of rain.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Scott Feldman (6-7, 4.64 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Freddy Garcia (6-5, 4.85)

Feldman won six consecutive decisions before losing his last outing, when he gave up four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers. He has walked just six batters in his last 11 appearances, which includes nine starts. Feldman is 3-2 with a 4.85 ERA in seven career appearances (five starts) against the Yankees.

Garcia has won back-to-back starts following a three-game losing streak. He defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in his last outing when he allowed two runs and five hits in six innings. Garcia hasn’t lost to Texas since 2004 and is 8-5 with a 4.10 ERA in 22 career starts against the Rangers.

TRENDS:

* Under is 3-1-1 in Feldmans last five starts vs. Yankees.
* Rangers are 2-7 in the last nine meetings.
* Rangers are 0-7 in the last seven meetings in New York.

UMP TRENDS - Victor Carapazza

* Home team is 4-0 in Carapazzas last four games behind home plate vs. Texas.
* Over is 3-1-2 in Carapazzas last six games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Yankees SS Derek Jeter is batting .383 during a 10-game hitting streak and has a .385 career mark with two homers in 13 at-bats against Feldman.

2. Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler is just 1-for-13 in his career against Garcia.

3. New York OF Curtis Granderson is hitting just .205 in 30 games since the All-Star break but is 5-for-9 with three homers against Feldman.

Wednesday's betting tips: Phillies pitchers on point

Weather watch

Thunderstorms are in the forecast for New York, where the Yankees host the Texas Rangers. There is a 61 percent chance of rain.

Who’s hot?

Philadelphia Phillies: After a season of disappointments, the Phillies have won three in a row and send Roy Halladay to the bump looking for No. 4 versus the Miami Marlins Wednesday. Philadelphia is 7-3 in its last 10 games.

Who’s not?

Oakland Athletics: The A’s are in Kansas City trying to right the ship in August. They’ve lost back-to-back outings and are just 1-3 in their last four games.

Game of the day

Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants (+113, 6.5)

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

James Harrison, Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers star linebacker and emotional leader on defense may need arthroscopic knee surgery. Harrison is currently on the PUP list and surgery would likely leave him out of action for Week 1’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Notable quotable

"I don't think Bobby Valentine should be fired.” – Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia on his manager after rumors circulated that the players wanted Valentine fired following a poor first season in Boston.

Betting news and notes

-- New York Giants DT Shaun Rogers will miss the entire 2012 season after a blood clot was discovered in his left calf. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin told the New York Daily News that the injury is "very sad.”

-- Phillies pitchers have combined to post a 0.41 ERA in their last five road games. Roy Halladay takes the mound versus the Marlins Wednesday.

-- The Astros have hit three or more home runs in nine games this season - two of them have come against the Cubs. The total for Wednesday’s game is 8.5 runs.

-- Chicago hasn't won consecutive games in Toronto since Aug. 4-5, 2006. The White Sox are -109 favorites in Toronto Wednesday.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Astros are 39-79; Lucas Harrell is 10-8, 3.81. NL Rookie of the Year?

-- A’s put gritty Brandon Inge on the DL (shoulder); they don’t have a competent replacement for him- this is bad news.

-- From 2003-07, Chad85Johnson averaged 92.4 catches a year, good for 1,374 yards a season, 85.9 yards a game. Highly productive, but that was five years ago. Now he's 34, unemployed and maybe unemployable as an NFL receiver. Too much drama for a marginal player.

-- Ron Palillo, who played Arnold Horshack on Welcome Back Kotter, died this week at age 63. Funny man.

-- Since 1950, three big league managers have won more games than Nats' skipper Davey Johnson, without winning a World Series:
Al Lopez-Dusty Baker-Gene Mauch.

-- Wednesday is National Relaxation Day!!! This needs to be an official holiday. Kick back and enjoy.

*************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: With camp underway, some NFL thoughts

13) Over last three years, Carolina Panthers (3, all on special teams) have scored the least amount of touchdowns on defense/special teams; they’ve allowed 18. By way of contrast, Bears/Vikings lead NFL with 18 such TD’s over last three years.

12) Hard to believe, but Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t scored a special teams TD in last three seasons; Giants-Rams haven’t scored one in last two years. Giants also have only one defensive TD the last two seasons- they have won a Super Bowl during that time, though.

11) Houston Texans allowed 9.3 ppg less LY than in 2010; hope they gave DC Wade Phillips a raise. Part of reason is that their two games with Indy got lot simpler with Peyton Manning out of action, but Mario Williams also missed 11 games for the Texans.

10) Arizona Cardinals ran 32 plays inside opponents’ 5-yard LY; none of them were completed passes (0-3). Detroit Lions completed eight passes inside the 5, just to Calvin Johnson.

8) Should be noted that former Fordham Ram John Skelton was 6-2 as starting QB of the Cardinals LY. San Diego State rookie QB Lindley is getting solid reviews with the Redbirds this summer. Kevin Kolb? No solid reviews yet this month.

I hesitate to do this, but the Cardinals had some kind of a team meeting this week, after their first preseason game. They're playing Oakland at home on Friday, with Raiders on a very short week. If Arizona can't drill the Raiders in this game, you wonder about them. Sounds like they'll give an effort.

7) Over the last two seasons, Chicago RB Matt Forte has carried ball 15 times on plays that started 5 or less yards from the goal line; he scored only one touchdown.

6) Lot of reasons why teams improve dramatically, but the Lions scored seven defensive TD’s LY, after scoring a total of one the previous two seasons. That and a healthy Matthew Stafford spelled a huge improvement.

5) My dad is 86; he HATES IT when teams throw the ball near the goal line. He’s old school, wants team to run the ball in.

I hesitate to tell him that the 15-1 Packers threw the ball on 24 of 29 plays inside the opponents’ 5-yard line, and scored 19 TD’s on those 29 plays. I hesitate, but I will tell him.

4) Fantasy Football note: Atlanta WR Roddy White had 179 passes thrown his way LY, more than anyone in the NFL; new OC Dirk Koetter (former Arizona State HC) is supposed to have a more wide-open approach, so we’ll see what that means for the Falcons.

3) Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman threw only six INTs in 2010; he threw 22 LY, and now he has a new coach. Those facts are not unrelated.

2) I’m still skeptical of the 49ers; they had a +28 turnover ratio LY, and didn’t allow a TD on defense/special teams- they had two special teams TD’s in Week 1. Breaks of the game aren’t always going to go their way. In the seven seasons before LY, the Niners were -54 in turnovers.

1) Patriots are an elite team for many reasons, one of which is superior special teams. Over last two years, NE scored 13 TD’s on defense/ST’s, while allowing only two, both of which were given up by the offense. They don’t beat themselves. Plus they spy on teams.
