Jason Vargas, Seattle Mariners (12-7, 3.71 ERA)
Vargas allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four over seven innings as he notched his 12th win in Seattle's 7-2 victory over Toronto on Tuesday. His name was prominent in trade deadline rumors, but that hasn’t stopped the lefty from enjoying a career-best season thus far. Vargas has won five consecutive starts and hasn’t allowed three or more runs in each of his last seven outings. He takes the hill in Baltimore next time out.
Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (14-1, 2.29 ERA)
Weaver gave up two runs over 6 1/3 innings to earn the win Tuesday at Texas. The righty has now won eight straight starts, including six victories in July. Weaver has to be considered the frontrunner for the AL Cy Young Award as this point. The Angels’ ace is on pace for career lows in ERA (2.26) and WHIP (0.95). Weaver hurls against the A’s in his next outing.
Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (10-7, 3.33 ERA)
Capuano struggled Tuesday, yielding five runs on six hits in six innings, as the Dodgers were crushed by the Diamondbacks. Capuano served up two long balls, which accounted for all five of his earned runs. He’s 1-4 in his past five starts with a 5.90 ERA in 29 frames. He takes the mound against the lowly Rockies in his next start.
Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers (11-7, 4.38 ERA)
Darvish surrendered seven earned runs on four hits over five innings during Wednesday's 11-10 win over the Angels. The Japanese import has been touched up for 14 earned runs over his last three starts. He takes the mound against Boston for the first time this season on Monday.
