Monday, July 30

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: D'backs at Dodgers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (51-51) at Los Angeles Dodgers (56-47)
DATE/TIME: Monday, July 30 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: 124, -132 TOTAL: 7.5

The Dodgers are riding a wave of momentum as they begin a nine-game homestand against Arizona, which sits 4 1/2 games out of first in the National League West. Los Angeles moved into a first-place tie with San Francisco after sweeping the Giants in three games. It’s a critical series for Arizona, which plays 13 of its next 16 games against teams with winning records. The Diamondbacks believe they have time to make a run at the postseason, but they’ll need to play more consistently starting this week.

The Dodgers outscored San Francisco 19-3 over the weekend, and the team has received an instant spark from Hanley Ramirez, who is 7-for-20 with seven RBIs in five games since being acquired from Miami. Shortstop Luis Cruz has also provided a boost, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs on Sunday to extend his career-high hitting streak to 12 games. Arizona begins the series with a new third baseman after acquiring Chris Johnson from the Astros in exchange for minor league outfielders Bobby Borchering and Marc Krauss.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS Arizona (Arizona), PRIME (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Trevor Cahill (8-9, 3.86 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Aaron Harang (7-5, 3.39)

Cahill is 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in his last two road starts, and he continues to struggle early in games. He has a 7.65 ERA in the first inning while allowing a first-inning run in 11 starts, including seven straight. Cahill gave up four runs in 6 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Rockies, falling to 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA through five starts in July.

Harang allowed two hits and two runs in 7 1/3 innings Wednesday at St. Louis, and he’s only allowed more than three earned runs once in his last 11 outings. He’s 3-6 with a 2.42 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) lifetime against the Diamondbacks, and catcher Miguel Montero is 7-for-14 with a homer against Harang.

WALK-OFFS

1. Montero has reached base safely in 15 of his last 22 plate appearances, going 9-for-16 (.563) with five walks.

2. Dodgers 1B James Loney had two hits Sunday and leads the team in batting this month with a .328 average (21-for-64).

3. The Diamondbacks are 30-24 at home and 21-27 on the road.

BETTING TRENDS

Diamondbacks are 3-10 in their last 13 road games vs. a right-handed starter
Dodgers are 1-10 in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record
Under is 7-0-1 in Diamondbacks last 8 Monday games
Under is 8-2 in Cahill's last 10 road starts
Diamondbacks are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings

Monday's betting tips: Angels star CF Trout day-to-day

Weather to watch

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers: The wind is expected to be blowing in from right field at 11 mph. Also, it’s going to be hot. Forecast is calling for the game time temperature to be around 102 F.

Who’s hot?

The Cincinnati Reds are riding a 10-game win streak. They’re also 17-2 over their last 19 games.

Who’s not?

Michael Phelps. The American swimmer missed another chance at gold after Team USA lost to France in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

Key stat

+1520 – Honduras’ odds of beating Spain in Sunday’s Olympic soccer match. Honduras won the match and, in the process, eliminated Spain from advancing from group play. It was the first time since the 2001 U-17 World Cup that Spain has been eliminated in the group stage of any world tournament, according to ESPN soccer writer Paul Carr.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mike Trout – The shoe-in to win the AL Rookie of the Year – and maybe the MVP award too – was a late scratch from Sunday’s lineup because of a bruised knee. It’s just supposed to be a day-to-day thing but a hitter of Trout’s quality is going to be missed no matter how short the time on the shelf is.

Betting notes

-Things have gotten beyond awkward in the Boston Red Sox locker room. Bobby Valentine is sending mixed signals about why left fielder Carl Crawford is getting days off and it’s just another example of a long list of damaged relationships Valentine carries in the clubhouse. He seems to know what’s going on, even if he’s using sarcasm as a defensive mechanism. When asked why SP Jon Lester is having such an awful season, Valentine responded, “Got to be the manager he’s pitcher for.”

-The Atlanta Braves are shaking up their starting rotation. Kris Medlen is taking Jair Jurrjens’ spot according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Medlen is enjoying a fine season as the team’s long relief man but the Braves are hoping he can fill a hole in the rotation unless they pick up an arm on trade deadline day.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Statistical leaders in baseball, thru four months of play.......

Runs-- Trout 75, Granderson/Kinsler 70, Bourne 69, CGonzalez 68.

RBI-- Hamilton/Cabrera 83, Williangham 78, Beltran/Dunn 73.

OB%-- Votto .465, McCutchen .425, Wright .423, Mauer .418.

HRs-- Dunn 31, Granderson-Encarnacion-Hamilton-Braun 28.

ERA-- Vogelsong 2.22, Dempster 2.25, Weaver 2.26, Zimmerman 2.28.

K's-- Hernandez 153, Strasburg 151, Dickey 147, Verlander 146.

*************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

13) Zach Greinke never lost in 23 home starts for Milwaukee; he lost in his first home start for the Angels, though he pitched well in a 2-0 loss.

How does a team like the Angels get shut out two days in a row?

12) Oakland Coliseum, or whatever they call it these days (O.com?) is last stadium in America that houses both an NFL team and an MLB team.

11) Is this the last year NBA stars will play in the Olympics? Mark Cuban hopes so; the star players hope not. Could be an interesting struggle.

10) A quality start is defined by 6+ innings pitched, three or less runs given up; Cubs are 28-12 when they get a quality start, 3-29 if they do not.

9) Francisco Lirano's trade to Chicago was first White Sox-Twins trade since 1986, when the infamous Pete Filson-Kurt Walker swap took place.

8) Good to see Padres give Quentin/Street contract extensions; Friars are 15-10 in their last 25 games. At some point, these small market teams have to commit at least a little to winning, so the fans stay enthused.

7) Then there are the Astros, who were 22-23 on May 25; they're 13-42 since then, 3-26 in last 29 games. It looks hopeless now, but sometimes a franchise is better off hitting rock bottom, then bouncing back. They're off to the American League next year. They have a major rebuilding job to do.

6) Guy who owns the Cleveland Browns is selling majority interest in the team, but keeping 30%. Brandon Weeden will be an interesting study as a 28-year old rookie QB; he's three years older than Colt McCoy.

5) Would it kill some rich dude or dudette to put an In 'n Out Burger here in Albany, NY? Best milkshake I've ever had. You would make a ton of money putting one here, and I'd be happy, which is most important.

4) A's catcher Derek Norris said it was so hot/humid in Baltimore during Saturday night's game, he sweated thru two jerseys and two undershirts. It is one thing to be 95 in northern California, but humidity in Maryland can make 95 feel like 110 or worse. A's will be glad to get home.

3) Late rumor has the Giants acquiring Hunter Pence from the Phillies. Question is: Would San Francisco part with Gary Brown?

2) From now until 4pm Tuesday will be interesting theater in baseball, with the trade deadline looming. Teams like Red Sox and Rays could go either way, they could sell some pieces or try and get back in the race.

1) Josh Beckett/James Shields are both scheduled to pitch Tuesday, so if they get dealt to Texas/Atlanta, its going to throw this week into chaos. Its an interesting time of year, but still think moving deadline back to August 31 will make things even more interesting.
