New York, NY (Sports Network) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell heard an appeal Thursday to overturn the five-game suspension of Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor wasn't present at the appeal and no ruling was immediately given.

The former Ohio State star has reversed his original position and appealed the suspension he was handed by the NFL before the Raiders even picked him in the supplemental draft.

Pryor, who signed a four-year contract with Oakland, had said during his pro workout day last month that he would not appeal any penalty handed down by NFL for the memorabilia scandal that eventually led to the resignation of Buckeyes head coach Jim Tressel.

The quarterback left Ohio State rather than serve a five-game suspension given by the NCAA.

The NFL, in a move that received much attention, applied that penalty in an effort to discourage players from leaving college under similar circumstances as Pryor's.

Pryor practiced with the Raiders in Alameda, California, on Thursday and was unable to attend the appeal hearing.
