Makin' Canadian bacon: Week 1 CFL preview and picks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CFL regular season kicks off this weekend. For some of you, that means football is back. For others, that means we're still a long way from football season.

Whatever it means to you, we'll preview the games each week and give you our picks.

Toronto Argonauts vs. Edmonton Eskimos (-2, 48.5)

The running game was about the only bright spot for the Argos last season with Cory Boyd running for more than six yards per carry. After that, the only thing saving Toronto from the worst record in the CFL was playing in the East Division.
New quarterback Ricky Ray should help on offense. He was a star and former Grey Cup MVP for Edmonton, which could make things a tad awkward in Week 1. Steven Jyles is charged with the new No. 1 role for the Eskies and it remains to be seen how consistent he’ll be on a team that made a ton of changes this offseason.

Pick: Toronto +2

Montreal Alouettes vs. Calgary Stampeders (-2.5, 55.5)

The Als went 10-8 last season but they were the worst team to bet on in the league (along with Sasky) with a 6-12 ATS record. They also closed the season with eight straight losses against the number and four losses straight up.
Ninety-seven-year-old quarterback Anthony Calvillo led the league in passing yards in 2011 with over 5 million (it’s the CFL, remember) and he anchors the Montreal offense. But with a record of 10-8 after several seasons of dominance there are some question marks in Montreal for the first time in a long time.
Calgary won both meetings with Montreal last season and covered the spread both times. They should give Montreal a strong fight on home soil on Canada Day.

Pick: Montreal +2.5

CFL Betting Notes - Week 2

July 4, 2012

The 2012 CFL regular season kicked off last weekend and the quest for this year’s Grey Cup is officially underway. The defending champions British Columbia Lions rolled over Winnipeg 33-16 as eight-point home favorites in a rematch of last year’s title game. Friday’s other opener saw Saskatchewan stun Hamilton 43-16 as a seven-point road underdog.
The weekend started with Edmonton squeaking out a 19-15 win over Toronto as a one-point home favorite on Saturday and the first week of action wrapped things up on Sunday with Calgary stampeding all over Montreal 38-10 as a 2 ½-point home favorite.

The following is brief preview of this week’s CFL games along with the opening point spread and ‘over/under’ lines as provided by BetOnline.com.

Friday, July 6

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Montreal Alouettes (-6 ½) Total: 51

Winnipeg won two of three against the Alouettes last season straight up and was a perfect 3-0 against the spread. All three games remained tight with the average margin of victory being just three points. The total stayed ‘under’ in two of the three games including the Blue Bombers 25-23 victory as 7 ½-point road underdogs in their only trip to Montreal last season. The total line in that game closed at 53.

The Blue Bombers are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four games on the road but Montreal is now 0-7 ATS in its last seven games as a favorite. Winnipeg is a perfect 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings, but 3-7 SU in the last 10 games between the two. The total has gone 5-4-1 in those 10 games. Bomber quarterback Buck Pierce left last week’s game with a leg injury, but he is listed as ‘probable’ for Friday night.

Hamilton Tiger Cats vs. British Columbia Lions (-6 ½) Total: 52 ½

Hamilton will try post its third straight victory over the Lions after beating them 39-31 as a 3 ½-point road underdog the first time they met last season and 42-10 as a 1 ½-point home underdog later in the year. The total went well ‘over’ the 49 ½-point line in the first game but stayed ‘under’ the 53 ½-point line in the 32-point romp.

The Tiger Cats have gotten the best of this matchup in recent years with a 5-2 SU record in the last seven meetings and a profitable 6-1 record ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of the seven games. Hamilton is also a healthy 5-1 ATS in its last six trips to British Columbia and the total has stayed ‘under’ in 11 of the last 16 meetings overall.

Saturday, July 7

Calgary Stampeders (-3 ½) vs. Toronto Argonauts Total: 48

Toronto only won six games last season but two of them were against the Stampeders. Calgary lost on opening day 23-21 as an eight-point home favorite in 2011 with the total staying ‘under’ the 51-point line. It dropped a 31-29 decision on the road later in the season as a 6 ½-point favorite. The total went ‘over’ the 52 ½-point line this time around.

The Stampeders have actually lost the last three meetings both SU and ATS. This followed a six-game winning streak SU (5-1 ATS) dating back to the 2007 season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of the last nine meetings, but it has gone ‘over’ in four of the last five games played in Toronto.

Sunday, July 8

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (-4) Total: 48

Edmonton swept last year’s three-game series SU and went 2-1 ATS. It rolled to a 42-28 victory on opening day as a six-point road underdog and followed that up with a dominating 17-1 romp as a six-point home favorite in Week 15. It closed-out the sweep with a 23-20 win as a nine-point home favorite in the final week of the 2011 regular season. The total stayed ‘under’ in the final two games.

The Eskimos are 7-3 both SU and ATS in the last 10 games of this series and they are 3-2 SU (4-1 ATS) in the last five meetings in Saskatchewan. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the last eight games overall, but has gone ‘over’ in 10 of the last 12 meetings at Mosaic Stadium.

Week 2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Makin' Canadian bacon: Week 2 CFL preview and picks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The East Division was supposed to be better this year. The West Division made it clear in Week 1 that they’re going to have to prove it.

The West went 4-0 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) and now the East comes limping into Week 2 licking its wounds.

Winnipeg Bluebombers vs. Montreal Alouettes (-7, 51.5)

It’s hard to believe that Montreal has failed to cover in nine straight games after last week’s 38-10 loss at Calgary. The Als have also lost five in a row straight up with their last win coming on Oct. 16, 2011 against Hamilton.

Speaking of five in a row, that’s the same money streak the Bluebombers have going against Montreal. Winnipeg looks like it has its gritty defense back after a 33-10 loss at B.C. last week. It was a performance that was better than the score indicated on the road against the defending Grey Cup champs.

Bombers QB Buck Pierce is banged up, as usual, after leaving last week’s game with a thigh injury. But Alex Brink is an OK backup if he has to fill in and seven points seems like too many to give a team that never seems to give much.

Pick: Winnipeg +7

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. B.C. Lions (-7, 53)

Hamilton started the season as a 3-1 Grey Cup favorite. A week later and it looks like this team is going to need more time to gel than oddsmakers originally anticipated.

Hamilton’s new passing attack with Henry Burris taking the snaps didn’t go quite as planned in a 43-16 loss to Saskatchewan. Burris threw for 284 yards with no TDs and one INT.

So why aren’t the Kitty-Cats more of an underdog on the road against a B.C. team that looks as sharp as it did last year?

Because Hamilton gives the Lions a hard time for some strange reason. The Ti-Cats won both meetings last year and have covered the spread in six of the last seven clashes.

Still.

Pick: Lions -7

Calgary Stampeders vs. Toronto Argonauts (4, 48.5)

Canadian running back Jon Cornish bowled his way to 86 yards and two touchdowns in a convincing win over Montreal last week. Not sure the Stamps are going to have the same success against an Argos defense that likes to play physical and allowed just 15 points in a four-point loss last week.

Don’t count on there being too many games this season where the Argos allow fewer than 20 points and end up losing the game with Ricky Ray running the offense.

Pick: Toronto +4

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (-4.5, 48)

There might not be any team that wants to win this week as badly as the Roughriders. They went 0-10 against Western opponents last season and desperately hope to end that trend in their home opener this season.

Saskatchewan seemed to easily rack up 43 points on Hamilton last week and QB Darian Durant was named Offensive Player of the Week with four TDs and a whack of yards. Meanwhile, the Eskies struggled in the post-Ricky Ray era on offense against Toronto and they know they’re in for a battle in Regina.

Pick: Saskatchewan
