SHOPWITHSPOOKY.COM WEEKLY EXPRESS ASKING COMMISSIONER GOODELL TO RUN BOXING

Monday's six-pack

-- It is June 11 and the Pirates are tied for first place. Go figure.

-- Cliff Lee has a 3.18 ERA in ten starts, but no wins yet.

-- Before this weekend, Bronx Bombers hadn't had a sellout since Opening Day- they sold out all three games against the Mets.

-- Red Sox had their 745th consecutive sellout Sunday.

-- ESPN hired retired referee Steve Javie to work its NBA Finals coverage; excellent move. We need a referee's perspective on TV.

-- If the baseball playoffs started today, these are your playoff teams:

NL: Nationals-(Pitt or Cin)-Dodgers-Atlanta-San Francisco
AL: Rays-White Sox-Rangers-Bronx-Baltimore

Monday's Dirty Dozen: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

12) There is a 78-year old retired CPA named Harry Scott who is trying to play golf in all 50 states, in a 50-day period. He'll put 20,000 miles on his rental car while doing this. The guy is 78!!!!

11) Mr Scott didn't take up golf until 15 years ago; his last stop on tour is in Wasilla, Alaska, Sarah Palin's hometown. He says lot of club pros have picked up the tab for his greens fees when they heard about his tour.

10) Back in 1995, he went to 28 major league ballparks in 28 days, then did the 30-in-30 thing three years ago. Guy should write a book.

9) Memo to the new owners of Pringle's, who paid $2.7B; how about filling up your cans with potato chips, instead of leaving the top half-inch of cans empty? Too much cutting corners nowadays. You think your product is so good you paid $2.7B for it? Then fill up the cans, so we'll buy them.

8) Florida State holds the record, having gone to 21 College World Series without ever having won one; will #22 be the charm? They're going to the World Series again, but no one will notice, because Cinderella Stony Brook is going to deservedly get most of the attention.

7) Couple years ago, someone in the media took a secret ballot poll of major leaguers as to who the worst umpire was, and CB Bucknor got 37% of the vote. From looks of things, he hasn't improved much in two years.

6) It isn't bad enough that the scummy Wilpons are hooked up with Bernie Madoff, noted thief; they're selling unused tickets from Johan Santana's no-hitter for a mere $50, plus shipping/handling.

5) Colorado Rockies lost their last five games, during which time the ERA of their starting pitchers is a hefty 14.89. Someone better find the keys to that humidor and put the baseballs back in there.

4) Somehow I missed this last weekend, but Kent State beat Kentucky in a 21-inning game in the baseball regional, then went on and won it. Kent plays at Oregon 7pm Monday night for right to go to the College World Series. It isn't often a team from Ohio makes the College World Series.

3) Speaking of which, Big Dozen hasn't had a team make it to the CWS in 28 years, when Michigan made it to Omaha in 1984.

2) Jim Nantz wasn't at the Memphis Open this weekend because he was at Pebble Peach getting married, with Tom Brady, Phil Mickelson and Robert Kraft all in attendance. As the wise man once said, "Second marriages are a triumph of hope over experience." We wish the couple well.

1) Marquette's basketball team is going to be doing lot of travelling in the fall; they're playing Ohio State on a Naval ship in Charleston, then going to the Maui Classic. Thats a lot of frequent flyer miles.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Braves are now 0-9 on Mondays; they’re 34-18 the other six days.

-- Memphis signed 5-11 Sam Craft, a QB who will also play basketball for the Tigers; Cincinnati, Auburn,Tennessee were after him for hoops.

-- Team that scored first won the last 18 Stanley Cup Finals games.

-- Big East is suing TCU for $5M; Horned Frogs never played a game in the league. Lawyers billing lot of hours on this garbage.

-- Mike Emrick is the best announcer in any sport; he's going to be on the water polo games in the Olympics. I'll probably watch one or two.

-- Kid named Ben Dickinson transferred from Binghamton to LMU, one of the great weather upgrades in basketball transfer history; on the other side of the ledger is Hector Harold, who transferred from Pepperdine to Vermont. Hope he has a nice big parka.

Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

13) I’d like to be a fly on the wall next winter, when ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla works a Baylor game; Fraschilla threw Baylor coach Scott Drew under the bus bigtime at the NBA Draft Combine, saying “……lets face it, he’s (Perry Jones III) never had any…..coaching.”

He then tried to shift it to Jones’ high school and AAU coaches, but it was obvious what he thinks of Drew, especially after the panel shredded the skills of another Baylor player, Quincy Miller, later on in the show.

12) Iowa State’s Royce White is a top 10 draft talent, but he has an anxiety issue regarding getting on airplanes, which isn’t good for an NBA player. He also had some off-court problems while at Minnesota that might be difficult to explain away.

11) Going to be a busy summer for the Celtics, who right now have only four players under contract for next season.

10) Teams that win in the NBA find talent where other teams don’t; Manu Ginobili was the 57th player taken in his draft. Kenneth Faried was picked 22nd LY, hurt by his small-school background at Morehead State, but he helped the Nuggets a lot this season.

9) US Olympic basketball team has an exhibition game against Dominican Republic National team at UNLV on July 12.

Isn’t John Calipari the coach of the DR national team? This could be interesting, especially with no baseball being played that night.

8) Baltimore Orioles have now won their last nine extra-inning games.

7) When Ryan Dempster struck Joe Mauer out three times Sunday, he became just second pitcher to do so, joining CC Sabathia (as an Indian).

6) Chad Billingsley has trailed 1-0 (given up the first run) in 12 of his 14 starts this season, the worst-such record of any pitcher in baseball.

5) Josh Holliday (Matt’s brother) was recently named head baseball coach at Oklahoma State, replacing Frank Anderson (father of A’s pitcher Brett Anderson) who had replaced Tom Holliday (Matt’s father) as Cowboys’ coach. Got it?

Matt Holliday and Brett Anderson were teammates for half a season in Oakland in 2009.

4) When San Diego sent pitcher Andrew Cashner to AA Mobile Sunday, it wasn’t a demotion; he’s switching from relieving to starting, so he needs 2-3 starts in the minors to gradually increase his pitch count.

Former Pirate starter Ross Ohlendorf will take Cashner’s spot in the rotation until he gets back.

3) Florida State spent $525,000 on football recruiting LY; that seems excessive, but recruiting is the lifeline of any successful program. The use of private planes (over $200,000 LY) inflates the recruiting expense.

If you don’t get excellent players, you don’t win, then donors don’t donate as much, so spending a lot on recruiting is a solid investment that pays off down the road. Its the most justifiable expense.

2) Umpire Brian Runge has worked the plate twice in Seattle this season; both games were no-hitters, the Mariners’ combined no-hitter Friday, and Philip Humber’s perfect game in April.

1) I became a Lion fan when I was ten years old; they never won the Super Bowl, so I dont know how LA Kings fans feel today, as their team finally sits atop the hockey world. Congrats to all of you.
Fans who have given years of loyalty got their payoff last night. Enjoy.
