Saturday's six-pack

-- Lakers went 41-42 from foul line, beat Oklahoma City by 3, as home team is now 3-0 in series. Game 4 in Saturday night at Staples.

-- 76ers rallied back from 18 down in second half, beat Celtics by 9, tying their series 2-2, as series shifts to Boston.

-- Marlins are getting a lot out of Carlos Zambrano; he gave up two runs in seven IP, as Miami won again, this time in Cleveland.

-- They had 34,715 in Houston for Rangers-Astros, good sign for when Astros move to the AL and Texas is a division rival.

-- Very touching scene at Wrigley, with Kerry Wood striking out only guy he faced, in his last big league appearance. His little son ran on the field and hugged him as he walked to the dugout. Good stuff.

-- AL teams were 9-5 on first night of interleague play. Over was 7-7, 3-3 in games with a DH, 4-4 in games with no DH.

SPOOKY AND THE PREAKNESS

After reviewing the field several times and looking for some type of ‘deeply insightful selection’ yet I find myself coming back to three horses every time; Bodemeister, Creative Cause and I’ll Have Another.

Bodemeister has a similar look to Shackleford and if he runs the race he ran in the Derby I don’t think anyone will catch him given the shorter distance. All indications are that he is fit and came out the race in very good shape. If he shows up, he will be tough to beat.

Creative Cause ran well in the Derby despite a pretty poor trip. He couldn’t have gotten to the winners that day and may be hard pressed to catch the top one in the Preakness but he deserves consideration and could move forward some with a good trip.

I’ll Have Another had a super trip in the Derby and really showed heart getting to the front-runner late. He is the Derby winner and that alone merits respect; wouldn’t want him at really short odds but he must be given some respect.

OK, so I do have one other horse that should be watched and could surprise; Went The Day Well. He had a very poor start early on in the Derby and seemed to fighting his way back the entire race. His trainer certainly knows the track and if he continues to improve and move forward of the Derby he could jump into the mix. He is likely to be over bet due to local connections so again value becomes an issue.

I think Bodemeister is clearly the horse to beat here. He will get an easier lead this time and the shorter distance will benefit; it’s just very hard to take the short odds so I may just be jumping all over Went The Day Well.

Here is what I am doing

WENT THE DAY WELL.........Across the Board

Exacta Box with Went The Day Well, Bodemeister, Creative Cause and a a shot with Daddy Nose Best

Trifecta Box with the same hoping for something good to happen.

Sunday's six-pack

-- Chipper Jones is hurt again; Braves are 19-5 when he plays, 6-11 when he doesn't. Uh-oh.

-- Since start of interleague play many years ago, American League DHs have hit .276, NL designated hitters have hit only .251.

-- Indians are catching on in Cleveland; their walk-up ticket sale Friday was over 6,000, one of top ten nights in history of Jacobs Field.

-- White Sox won 13 of their last 15 games against the Cubs.

-- Can anyone give me one reason why Aroldis Chapman isn't the closer for the Reds? He is an intimidating figure on the mound.

-- AL is 18-10 vs NL in first two nights of interleague play, 9-5 on both Friday/Saturday. Over is 10-6 in NL parks, 5-7 in AL parks.

Sunday's Dirty Dozen: Doing some thinking out loud.........

12) Good news for the CAA, as George Mason stays in the league, which has already lost Georgia State/VCU/Old Dominion this spring.

11) November’s Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas had UConn, Florida State and Harvard LY; their field this November will be much stronger— Louisville-Duke-Stanford-Missouri-Minnesota-Memphis-VCU-Northern Iowa. One of those teams is going home 0-3.

10) Sportsbooks made out on the Heat-Pacer game Thursday; Indiana opened as a slight favorite, but Miami wound up a 2.5-point favorite. Takes lot of money to move a line that much.

9) This is how good the NBA is: James Harden doesn’t start for Oklahoma City, but he was a huge star at Arizona State, the Sun Devils were 20-16 in Pac-10 play in his two years there. In three years since Harden left, ASU is 21-33 in conference play.

8) Speaking of Arizona State, they’re in a tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in November, with Creighton-Arkansas-Wisconsin. A Wisconsin-ASU game could be very, very low scoring. Arkansas-Wisconsin would be a tremendous contrast in style. Like Halle Barry vs Roseanne Barr.

7) Since the start of the 2011 season, Alex Rodriguez has only 21 homers; his slugging %age/OPS have gone down every year the last five years. Good thing he doesn't have $135M left on his contr--whoops, forget I said that.

6) Umpire Bob Davidson was suspended for Friday night’s game, due to inadequate “situation handling”, according to the MLB office. Wish we had more information on this one, but tossing Charlie Manuel from a game last week when Manuel never left the dugout was said to be the last straw. .

5) Cincinnati Reds are staying in New York City from Wednesday-Sunday, making them the first team to play Mets/Bronx Bombers in the Big Apple in the same week.

4) When Octavio Dotel got his first save for the Tigers, it was the 9th team he’s saved a game for, tying him with Goose Gossage for the most teams having saved a game for. Also means Dotel didn’t get a save for four of the teams he pitched for.

3) Just for the record and because I'm amused by trivia, Kevin Durant's one year as a Texas Longhorn ended with an 87-68 loss to USC in second round of NCAAs. Texas was a 2.5-point favorite in that game; they had beaten New Mexico State by 12 in the first round (79-67, -9.5).

2) Four weeks after hiring 71-year old nomad Larry Brown as basketball coach, SMU fired AD Steve Orsini, even though he had a contract that runs thru 2015. Apparently, hiring Brown was the school president's brilliant idea, and not Orsini's, so he has that going for him.

1) On March 21, Boris Diaw was waived by the hideously awful Charlotte Bobcats, who went 7-59 this season. Two days later, he signed on with the Spurs, who are on a 17-game winning streak. Not that he needs the money, because he makes $9M a year, but Diaw should go buy a lottery ticket.
