NBA Playoff Series Preview: Hawks vs. Celtics

NBA PLAYOFF SERIES PREVIEW

No. 5 ATLANTA HAWKS (40-26)

vs. No. 4 BOSTON CELTICS (39-27)

Eastern Conference – First Round, Best-of-7 series
Game 1 Tip-off: Sunday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Series Line: Boston -200, Atlanta +165

Don’t let the records fool you. The Celtics have been pacing themselves all year for the postseason, and they’ll be ready when they open their first-round series in Atlanta on Sunday night.

After a slow start to the year, Boston finished its season by winning 14 of its final 19 games. But more than that, this team is built for the playoffs. There’s the fact that the C’s have postseason-tested veterans. But more than that, their aging roster will benefit from the spaced-out series, which will keep them fresh. The Hawks do have a dangerous lead guard in Jeff Teague and Josh Smith is becoming a more effective player in the half court. But Joe Johnson is just a 41.3% FG shooter in his Hawks playoff career, and they’re still without Al Horford, erasing any significant low-post advantage against the smallish Celtics. The Hawks have escaped the first round each of the past two years (granted, it was against the Bucks in 2010 and the dysfunctional Magic a year ago), but the matchup with the Celtics doesn’t work for them, even with home-court advantage for having one more win than the Atlantic Division champs.

StatFox Prediction: BOSTON to win series in 6 games.

The Celtics came on strong in the second half of the season in large part because of the resurgence of PF Kevin Garnett. With C Jermaine O’Neal out for the season, Garnett slid over to center and has looked like his old self on both ends of the court. In the second half of the season, he averaged 17.5 PPG on 50.8% FG, and he remains one of the best pick-and-roll defenders in the NBA. SF Paul Pierce has settled back in as the team’s closer, and PG Rajon Rondo has handed out 10 or more assists in each of the past 24 games. The Celtics’ one question mark is the health of SG Ray Allen, their best pure shooter, who is nursing an ankle injury. Though SG Avery Bradley is a defensive upgrade and proved a capable scorer, Allen’s ability to catch and shoot from behind the arc can’t be duplicated.

The Hawks slowly rounded into form after losing Horford to a season-ending pectoral injury back in January. They’ve been a tough team to figure out. A year ago, they stumbled through the final two months of the season only to get to the playoffs and crush an Orlando team that had manhandled them a year earlier. A big part of their success this year has been the maturation of PF Josh Smith, though he’s always a question mark in the half court slog of the postseason. But Atlanta’s biggest issue will be its lack of size to exploit the Celtics’ front line.

Four Series Tip Off Sunday In NBA Playoffs

Four series in the NBA Playoffs begin on Sunday with all the teams vying to be this year’s Dallas Mavericks. Eight teams will get their championship quests started with the first matchup coming out of the Western Conference.

Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs – Sunday, 1:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN

Those wily, ole Spurs are back at it again. Not only are they back in the postseason but they own the No. 1 seed in the West and racked up another 50-win year out of just 66 games. San Antonio is a 10½-point favorite for Game 1 with the total set at 207½.

Utah has been virtually playing playoff basketball for a long time, fighting with Houston and Phoenix for that final spot. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Jazz only beat the Spurs once out of four tries this season and in that win, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobli all rested.

The Spurs are the largest favorite to win their series at -2000 with the take-back on the Jazz at +1200.

Denver Nuggets at L.A. Lakers – Sunday, 3:30 p.m. (ET) on ABC

Standing in the way of Kobe Bryant’s shot at a sixth title is a Denver team that just went through its first full season in years without Carmelo Anthony. L.A. is a 4½-point home favorite with the total set at 201½ for Game 1.

The Nuggets were the highest scoring team in the league but all four matchups with the Lakers this year went ‘under’ the total. Denver only won one game out of the four in their season series but did go 2-2 against the spread.

Al Harrington (knee) missed the last game of the regular season but is probable for Sunday.

The series price is close with the Lakers -202 and the Nuggets at +172.

Boston Celtics at Atlanta Hawks – Sunday, 7:00 p.m. (ET) on TNT

At one point this year, it looked like this regime in Boston could be blown up but now they find themselves as the No. 4 seed in the East. Among other factors, the resurgence of Kevin Garnett, the great recent play of Paul Pierce, and the outstanding performance all year from Rajon Rondo helped to lift the Celtics back into contention.

The C’s are favored to win the series at -190 with the Hawks at +160.

However, Game 1 sees Atlanta favored by two with the low total of 178½. Remember, even though the Hawks are a lower seed they have the overall record edge and therefore, home court advantage.

Ray Allen (ankle) is doubtful in the series opener for Boston.

These squads played a tight season series with Boston going 2-1 both straight up and ATS. The Celtics won their two games by a total of five points and the Hawks won their one game by five.

L.A. Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies – Sunday, 9:30 p.m. (ET) on TNT

This has the chance to be the best series not just on Sunday but in the entire first round of the playoffs. The Clippers and Grizzlies were fighting with each other for playoff positioning with one game deciding the difference between them. Memphis got the No. 4 seed and home court.

In Game 1, the Grizz are favored by 5½ with the total set at 184½.

All three matchups this year had the same result, the favored home team won and covered. It just so happens that the Clips were home the extra time ending up 2-1 SU and ATS. The smallest margin of victory in those three games was a 7-point win by L.A.

Everyone knows that Chris Paul is a top player in the league, but he’ll have a quality point guard matchup against the underrated Mike Conley. Interestingly enough, Paul and Conley are No. 1 and No. 2 in steals, respectively.

Memphis is -204 to win this first round series while L.A. is +174.

Following up these four games on Sunday will be Game 2 for three series on Monday.

New York Knicks at Miami Heat – Monday, 7:00 p.m. (ET) on TNT

This star-studded affair began Saturday in Miami and the Heat are a sizable favorite at -900 to win the series with the Knicks sitting at +650.

Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers – Monday, 7:30 p.m. (ET) on NBA TV

It’s the Dwight Howard-less Magic against the least talked about top seed in ages, the Pacers. Indiana is a whopping -1500 to be the first to win four games while Orlando is +950.

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder – Monday, 9:30 p.m. (ET) on TNT

This will be Game 2 of the rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals. OKC is the favorite in the series at -600 with the defending NBA champions at +475.

What bettors need to know: Sunday's NBA Playoffs action
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs (-10.5, 207)

THE STORY: The Utah Jazz survived a spirited battle with the Phoenix Suns to secure the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference. The reward: a first-round meeting with the powerhouse Spurs beginning with Game 1 Sunday afternoon in San Antonio. Utah was one of the hottest teams to close out the regular season - winning five in a row - but will be in tough against a Spurs club that ended the campaign with 10 consecutive victories despite giving their key players plenty of rest.

TV: 1 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE JAZZ (36-30, 34-31-1 ATS): Utah surprised many by emerging as one of the top offensive teams in the league this season, averaging nearly 100 points per game. The Jazz's balanced attack was led by veteran power forward Al Jefferson, who averaged 19.2 points and 9.6 rebounds to earn his way back to the playoffs after a seven-year absence. Utah will also lean heavily on swingman Gordon Hayward, who capitalized on extra playing time to average 14.1 points in 34 games after the All-Star break.

ABOUT THE SPURS (50-16, 42-20-4 ATS): San Antonio was one of only two teams to reach the 50-win plateau this season, marking what could be head coach Gregg Popovich's most impressive accomplishment to date. Dealing with an aging star in Tim Duncan and the absence of swingman Manu Ginobili for a major portion of the season, the Spurs still posted the second-best scoring average in the NBA (103.7 ppg). At the heart of the offensive explosion was point guard Tony Parker, who averaged 18.3 points and a career-best 7.7 assists.

TRENDS:

* Over is 14-3 in the last 17 meetings in San Antonio.
* Favorite is 21-7-1 ATS in the last 29 meetings.
* Over is 11-4 in the last 15 meetings.
* Road team is 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Jazz are 3-11-1 ATS in the last 15 meetings in San Antonio.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Spurs won three of four regular-season meetings, though the Jazz prevailed 91-84 in their last head-to-head encounter April 9.

2. San Antonio has been eliminated from the playoffs in the opening round in two of the last three seasons.

3. Jefferson averaged 6.1 points in just over 19 minutes in his only other playoff experience as a 20-year-old with the Boston Celtics in 2005.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-4.5, 202)

THE STORY: This will be the sixth postseason series betweenthe Lakers and Denver Nuggets with Los Angeles prevailing in each one, mostrecently in the 2009 Western Conference finals. The Lakers earned the thirdseed in the West despite theatrics they have grown accustomed to, culminating ina seven-game suspension for Metta World Peace’s vicious elbow. He still mustsit out six games. Denver has the ability to push the ball and limited KobeBryant to 17.7 points in the four-game series this season.

TV:3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (38-28, 36-30 ATS): While the quickness of Ty Lawson willbe a strength for Denver, forwards Danilo Gallinari and Al Harrington could bekey in the absence of World Peace. The Nuggets also have a rising rookie thatis big enough to bother the Lakers’ inside game. Kenneth Faried led all rookiesin rebounding (7.7) and the self-title Manimal said he is up to the task. “Kill. We're not friends. Don't talkto me,” Faried told The Denver Post of his game strategy.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (41-25, 28-38 ATS): Los Angeleslacks depth and has had trouble on the road, but Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasolhave proved too much for the Nuggets in the regular season, where the Lakerswon three of four. And there is no better clutch player in the league than KobeBryant, who finished second in scoring and should be well rested despite shintroubles. With World Peace out and Matt Barnes nursing a sprained ankle, theLakers will use Devin Ebanks at small forward.

TRENDS:

* Under is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings.
* Under is 16-5 in the last 21 meetings in Los Angeles.
* Nuggets are 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Los Angeles.
* Nuggets are 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Nuggets are 15-0 when scoring atleast 60 points in the first half.

2. Los Angeles has won 17 of 21 postseason games against the Nuggets.

3. When the Lakers have home-courtadvantage in the opening round, they have a 34-2 series record.

Boston Celtics at Atlanta Hawks (-1.5, 178.5)

THE STORY: It could be the last major playoff run for Boston’s “Big Three” as the Celtics open the postseason against the host Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. Forwards Paul Pierce (34) and Kevin Garnett (35) and guard Ray Allen (36) are getting longer in the tooth and more prone to injury breakdowns. The fourth-seeded Celtics have the playoff experience edge, but the fifth-seeded Hawks appear capable of dispatching of the Celtics. Boston won two of the three regular-season meetings.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE CELTICS (39-27, 34-30-2 ATS): Boston likely won’t know if Allen can play until close to game time. The veteran guard has been bothered by an injured right ankle and missed the final nine games of the regular season. Pierce has sensed Allen’s distress. “It’s always frustrating when you’re sitting out,” Pierce said. “Ray is one of the great competitors in the league. I’m sure it eats at him every single day he can’t practice and every single game he can’t play.” Pierce left the regular-season finale with a sprained left big toe but will be ready for the Hawks. Point guard Rajon Rondo led the NBA in assists at 11.7 per game.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (40-26, 36-28-2 ATS): Atlanta didn’t decline in the fashion some surmised after a season-ending injury to All-Star center Al Horford. A prime reason was that forward Josh Smith stepped up to average a career-best 18.8 points to go with 9.6 rebounds. Smith accepted more responsibility as a team leader as well. “This was definitely a year where I was productive,” Smith said. “With the injury to Al, I had to step up as a scoring leader and being more of a vocal leader. Basically, it was just showing everybody what I always had in my game.” Point guard Jeff Teague will be a pivotal figure as the player who will be defending Rondo.

TRENDS:

* Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Celtics are 0-4 ATS in their last four playoff games as underdogs.
* Hawks are 7-1 ATS in their last eight Conference Quarterfinals games.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Atlanta took Boston to seven games before falling in the first round of the 2008 playoffs and the Celtics went on to win the NBA title.

2. Boston guard Avery Bradley averaged 15.1 points over the final 15 regular-season games and will start whether or not Allen is available.

3. Hawks forward Zaza Pachulia (foot) is expected to miss the opener.

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-5.5, 184)

THE STORY: Reaching the postseason has not been the norm for the Los Angeles Clippers, who are in the playoffs for the first time since 2005-06. They have won just one playoff series in four appearances since moving to Los Angeles for the 1984-85 season but come into this one having set a franchise record for victories this season. Memphis earned the fourth seed with a victory over Orlando in the season finale, has won a franchise-record 11 consecutive home games and is hosting a playoff series for the first time.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (40-26, 33-33 ATS): Chris Paul came to Los Angeles in the biggest preseason trade in recent memory and is a major reason the Clippers ended a six-year playoff drought. The All-Star point guard enters the playoffs with a mild groin strain that kept him out of Friday’s practice. He insists he will play in the opener. The Clippers will miss the playoff experience of Chauncey Billups; the 15-year veteran had season-ending surgery in February for a torn Achilles’ tendon. Blake Griffin will play in his first playoff series and will have to fight through Memphis’ big front line.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (41-25, 29-37 ATS): Memphis is not one of the flashiest teams in the NBA but has perhaps the best perimeter defense in the league. Led by Tony Allen, Mike Conley and Rudy Gay, the Grizzlies led the league in forced turnovers at 17.1 per game. All-Star Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph will test the Clippers inside. “They want to make every possession a dogfight,” Clippers guard Randy Foye said. “They want to grind it out. They want you to take the shot they want you to take, not the shot that you want to take. That's what makes it tough.”

TRENDS:

* Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Memphis.
* Clippers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
* Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last five playoff games as favorites.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Clippers won the season series 2-1. Memphis leads the overall series 33-32.

2. Griffin is the only player in the league averaging at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

3. Paul is first in the league in steals (2.53) while Conley is second (2.19).

Armadillo's Write-Up

Wednesday, May 2

Jazz @ Spurs-- San Antonio have won last 11 games (10-0-1 vs spread) with eight of last nine going over the total. Spurs won seven of last eight games vs Utah, winning last four played here by 9-15-10-15 points, as 106-91 Game 1 win came fairly easily. Utah won five of their last six games, is 3-1-1 vs spread in its last five games as an underdog. SA subs were 6-12 behind arc, 10-26 inside it; those were only six treys Spurs made. So far in playoffs, Game 1 losers are 5-1 vs spread in Game 2.

Magic @ Pacers-- Orlando got split in Indiana; they're 9-2 in last 11 vs Indiana, winning six of last seven played here, with only one of the six wins by less than 13 points. Magic took 49 3's, 30 FTs in two games at Indiana, a bad ratio- they need some inside scoring. Pacers were down a hoop at half in Game 2, outscored Orlando 30-13 in 3rd quarter- starting guards were 13-20 in Game 2, a marked improvement. Scoring 81-78 is not going to get it done; where does Magic find more offense?

Clippers @ Grizzlies-- LA was down 27 at one point in Game 1, trailed by 24 with 7:52 left, rallied to stun Memphis in 99-98 Game 1 win, as big a comeback as ever happened in NBA playoffs. Clippers won five of last six series games, with home team winning five of last seven, three of four this season. Clippers lost Butler with broken left hand; they got 19 points from Young in 24:00 off bench. Game 1 loss snapped Grizzlies' 6-game win streak. Previous three NBA teams that blew such a big lead wound up getting to NBA Finals.

What bettors need to know: Wednesday's NBA playoff action
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs (-11.5, 204)

THE STORY: The last time Gregg Popovich was named NBA Coach of the Year, the San Antonio Spurs went on to win the NBA championship. That bodes well for the Spurs, who resume their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series Wednesday night against the visiting San Antonio Spurs. Popovich was named coach of the year for a second time Tuesday after leading the Spurs to 50 regular-season victories. San Antonio earned a convincing 106-91 win over Utah in the series opener.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT, Fox Sports Southwest

ABOUT THE JAZZ: Utah had no answer for the Spurs in the opener, surrendering 58 points in the paint while allowing San Antonio to shoot nearly 48 percent from the field. Franchise power forward Al Jefferson said he and his teammates remained upbeat despite the one-sided loss. "Believe it or not, we do walk out with our heads up a little bit," said Jefferson, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in his first taste of postseason action since his rookie 2004-05 campaign. "Now let's just go and watch film and learn from our mistake, then get ready for Game 2."

ABOUT THE SPURS: Ever humble, Popovich credited much of his success with San Antonio to the fortuitous arrivals of franchise centers David Robinson and Tim Duncan. "If you can draft David Robinson and follow that up with Tim Duncan, that's a couple of decades of very, very possible success unless you just screw it up," he said. "So it's hard to take credit when circumstances have gone your way so consistently." The aging Duncan showed signs of his old self in the series opener, erupting for 17 points and 11 rebounds. Tony Parker led the way with 28 points and eight assists

TRENDS:
- San Antonio is 21-5-1 against the spread in its last 27 home games.
- The over is 2-8-1 in San Antonio's last 30.
- Utah is 1-3-1 against the spread in its last five meetings with San Antonio.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Popovich, who last won the coach-of-the-year award in 2003, earned 77 first-place votes to easily outdistance runner-up Tom Thibodeau of the Chicago Bulls (27). Indiana's Frank Vogel (seven) finished third.

2. San Antonio hasn't lost at home to Utah since dropping a 105-98 decision Jan. 20, 2010.

Indiana Pacers at Orlando Magic (3, 183.5)

THE STORY: The Orlando Magic earned a split in Indiana against the third-seeded Pacers but their Game 2 performance didn’t provide much encouragement that they can win the first-round series. The Magic were outplayed and outworked in the second half of the 93-78 loss and now Indiana can take the lead in the series with a victory in Orlando on Wednesday. The Pacers have held the sixth-seeded Magic below 40 percent from the field in both games.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, Fox Sports Indiana (Indiana), Fox Sports Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE PACERS: Starting guards George Hill (18 points) and Paul George (17) combined to make 13 of 20 shots in Game 2 while thoroughly outplaying Orlando’s backcourt. Forwards David West and Danny Granger scored 18 points apiece but Granger had his second consecutive poor shooting game – he’s connecting at a 34.1-percent clip in the series. The Pacers outscored Orlando by 17 points in the second half when they had a 26-13 rebounding edge. “This time of year, games are a lot harder,” Granger said. “Everybody’s playing twice as hard. You have to be the team with the most resolve, the team just playing with the most attitude to try to get the win.”

ABOUT THE MAGIC: Orlando is averaging just 79.5 points in the series with a high game of 81. The loss of center Dwight Howard for the series has thrust Glen Davis into a leading role and that has produced mixed results. Davis is averaging 17 points and 11.5 rebounds but is shooting just 36.1 percent and disappeared in the second half of Game 2. Forward Ryan Anderson has experienced back-to-back poor games, averaging just eight points after making the most 3-pointers (166) in the league in the regular season. “We’re going to have to be better offensively,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “I’m going to have to find something that works.”

TRENDS:
- The over is 4-0 in Orlando's last four home games.
- Indiana has covered in four of its last five road games.
- Indiana is 2-6 against the number in the last eight meetings between the two teams.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Orlando scored just 64 second-half points in the two games at Indiana.

2. The Pacers shot 89.3 percent (25 for 28) from the free-throw line in Game 2 after hitting just 13 of 22 attempts in the opener.

3. Magic guard Jason Richardson had 17 points and five 3-pointers in the opener, but scored just two points in Game 2 while dealing with an early-game injury to his left thumb.

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5, 185)

THE STORY: Having lost home-court advantage, the Memphis Grizzlies will try to regain their wits after blowing a huge lead in the series opener against the Los Angeles Clippers. Memphis can ill afford to fall into a 2-0 hole when it hosts the Grizzles on Wednesday night in Game 2 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series. Memphis led by as many as 27 points and entered the fourth quarter with a 21-point cushion, tying a playoff record for the largest blown lead in the postseason.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT, FSTN

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Lost in the afterglow of the stunning comeback was an injury to starting forward Caron Butler, who is out four to six weeks with a broken hand. That underscored the importance of acquiring reserve swingman Nick Young in a midseason trade with the Washington Wizards. Young was sensational down the stretch in Game 1, burying three 3-pointers in a 60-second span and finishing with a team-high 19 points. That matched his season-high output since joining the Clippers. Los Angeles head coach Vinny Del Negro said he may start veteran Bobby Simmons in place of Butler and keep Young in his role as sixth man.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Memphis played a near-perfect three quarters before the collapse and must overcome the emotional wreckage of a loss that center Marc Gasol admitted was “heartbreaking.” Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins made a somewhat curious choice to start Zach Randolph, who came off the bench in 20 of the final 24 games after missing 2 1/2 months with a torn medial collateral ligament. The hero of last season’s playoffs, Randolph scored only six points on 3-of-13 shooting. Memphis went 37-17 with Marreese Speights in the starting lineup and 23-14 while Randolph was sidelined. With Randolph in a reserve role, the bench averaged a shade over 36 points per game.

TRENDS:
- Memphis is 0-5 against the spread in its last five overall.
- Los Angeles is 1-4 against the spread in its five.
- The under is 14-6 in Memphis' last 20.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Led by PG Chris Paul, Los Angeles had a league-high 14 regular-season wins when trailing by at least 10 points.

2. Three teams have blown 18-point leads in the postseason – and all three (Dallas 2011; New Jersey 2002; Houston 1994) advanced to the NBA Finals. The Mavericks and Rockets each won championships.

3. Memphis has dropped three of four meetings with the Clippers this season and had its 11-game home winning streak snapped.
