Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (+100, 5)

When Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin knocked Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson out of Game 2, he might have taken Ottawa out of the series entirely.

Hagelin was slapped with a three-game suspension for the hit, but with Chris Kreider adequately filling his spot on the top line in his first game as a pro, and Ottawa now struggling to find the back of the net, it could turn out to be a good trade-off for Rangers supporters.

Although Ottawa put the Rangers under pressure in Game 3’s 1-0 loss at times, New York consistently drops into the middle in the defensive zone, then capitalizes on the counterattack.

“We could just as easily be talking about us winning 1-0 as them winning 1-0,” Ottawa coach Paul MacLean told reporters after the game. “We just didn’t get a bounce at the end.”
Maybe, but this is how the Rangers challenged for the Presidents’ Trophy – winning those 1-0 or 2-1 games.

With Ottawa likely without its captain again and the Rangers looking more like themselves in Game 3, we’re siding with the visitors.

Pick: Rangers

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (-125, 5)

Everybody knew there were going to be major changes, when Darryl Sutter took over behind the bench for the Los Angeles Kings. Sutter isn’t the kind of guy to take anything lightly and the team is now playing a much more responsible brand of hockey.

“He's got a great system in place and he gets what he wants out of all his players,” defenseman Drew Doughty told reporters of his head coach. “And if not, you're not going to play. I know, for me and a lot of the other guys, it's almost scary playing for him because if you make that mistake, he's going to be all over you. It's not fun when he's all over you, so we're all playing our best for him and for each other."

As a result, the Kings have won 12 of their last 17 overall and eight of their last 10 home games.

The Canucks are desperate and the only way L.A. is going to pull off a sweep is to stay out of penalty trouble and watch Jonathan Quick stand on his head again.

At this point, that seems more than likely.

Pick: Under

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets

Pick: Under

Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils (-170, 5)

The Panthers got three goals from defensemen in their stunning 4-3 comeback win over the Devils on Tuesday.

“Any time you can get scoring from the back end, that’s going to make a difference,” said Jason Campbell, who had one of the tallies. “We got some good screens and you get rewarded.”

Both teams pulled their goalies in Game 3. The Devils will go back to 39-year-old Martin Brodeur, but it’s fair to wonder how long a leash he’ll have.

Florida has cashed in on 6 of 10 power-play opportunities.

The over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in New Jersey, and 4-0-2 in the Panthers’ last six games overall.

Pick: Over

St. Louis Blues at San Jose Sharks (-110, 5)

The Sharks had an extra day off between Games 3 and 4 to tweak their penalty kill, and that’s good. Because it needs a lot of work.

St. Louis scored three power-play goals to win 4-3 Monday and grab a 2-1 series lead.

The Sharks’ struggle on the penalty kill comes as no surprise: they finished 29th in the NHL with a 76.7 percent success rate in the regular season. In the last two regular-season games, San Jose gave up six power-play goals.

In Game 3, San Jose won only four of 11 faceoffs when in the defensive zone on the penalty kill or in the offensive zone on the power play. The Sharks converted 1 of 4 power plays, while the Blues converted 3 of 4.

“Winning faceoffs and getting clears are as important as reading what they're doing on their power play,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said.

The Blues have won six of the past seven meetings.

Pick: Blues

Coyotes And Blackhawks Continue Ugly Series

The Phoenix Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks return to the ice on Thursday night and the vast majority of the talk centers around the hit by Raffi Torres on Marian Hossa.

It’s been an exciting NHL playoffs so far, but also a brutal one. Torres has already been suspended indefinitely and will meet with head league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan on Friday. Hossa had to leave the rink via stretcher and this isn't Torres' first run-in with the Blackhawks. Hossa is not expected to play in Thursday's Game 4, but keep an eye on the Don Best injury report for possible updates.

We’ll preview all the Thursday games, but let’s first quickly recap a Tuesday contest. Florida stormed back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3 in overtime at New Jersey. Scott Clemmensen stopped all 19 shots he faced after Florida starter Jose Theodore allowed three tallies on just six shots.

Wednesday’s updated odds have the Rangers slight 115 favorites at Ottawa with a total of five (shaded to the ‘over’). The Senators’ Daniel Alfredsson (concussion) is listed as doubtful and it’s hard to see where their goals will come from if he’s out.

Also on Wednesday is Philadelphia (-120) trying to close out Pittsburgh in a sweep. The total of 6½ is still shocking to see on paper, but the average goals scored per game in the series is over 10.

Los Angeles is another team looking for a Wednesday sweep, this time over top-seed Vancouver. The Kings are just 120 favorites and Don Best sports analyst Brian Blessing believes they’ll close it out, with the Canucks becoming dangerous in the series if they survive. Note Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin (concussion) has been upgraded to probable.

Thursday has Florida and New Jersey back in action. New Jersey needs to win this one at home to avoid heading back to Florida down 3-1. Oddsmakers have bought into the desperation theory, installing the Devils as 175 favorites, but that is surprising given some of their home struggles this year.

Boston is a 135 road favorite at Washington. The total is five and shaded to the ‘over.’ The Capitals are down 2-1 in the series and hurt offensively with the 1-game suspension of Nicklas Backstrom. However, Don Best NHL analyst Benjie C. doesn’t think the loss will hurt too much and believes there is value with Washington at these odds.

San Jose is down 2-1 in its series with St. Louis and is a small 115 home favorite. The Blues have to feel a bit disrespected as the ‘dog after going 3-0 in San Jose this year, including winning last Monday (4-3), but Benjie C. feels the Sharks find a way to win this game.

Getting back to Phoenix and Chicago, the Blackhawks are 165 home favorites as they try to even the series at 2-2. Chicago was 150 chalk heading into Game 3 at home and is an even bigger favorite after losing 3-2 in OT. That’s raising some red flags for Benjie C. who believes Phoenix has been the better team in the series.
