Rangers' Hagelin suspended three games
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL on Sunday night suspended New York Rangers rookie winger Carl Hagelin three games for a hit that knocked Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson out of Game 2 on Saturday.

NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan called the hit "a reckless strike to the side of Alfredsson's head."

Hagelin has apologized for the hit and said it was unintentional. The play, which earned him a five-minute elbowing major, marred a game Ottawa won 3-2 in overtime to tie the series.

Hagelin had 14 goals and 24 assists this season while posting a plus-21 rating. The 23-year-old, who plays on New York's top line, has four shots and one assist in the playoff series.

Concern is growing in Ottawa that Alfredsson suffered another concussion. Earlier this season, he missed five games with a concussion.

His status is unclear for Monday's Game 3, with the top-seeded Rangers set as -115 road favorites.

Alfredsson scored in the series opener after tallying 27 goals and 32 assists in the regular season.

Also late Sunday, Sens defenseman Matt Carkner was suspended one game with going after Rangers center Brian Boyle early in Game 2.

Before the suspension was announced, Rangers coach John Tortorella said he did not expect Hagelin to miss a game.

"If we lose Hags for a game or two, Phillips should (miss) a game or two," Tortorella said, referring to Chris Phillips' elbow on Rangers captain Ryan Callahan.

But the elbow thrown by Phillips was not reviewed by the league.

Vancouver's Daniel Sedin could miss rest of series
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks injured left wing Daniel Sedin did not make the trip to Los Angeles for Game 3 of his team’s opening-round series with the Los Angeles Kings.

Sedin, who suffered a concussion on March 21, did not practice or skate with the team Saturday before they left for California. A former employee of the Canucks said on Twitter that Sedin would not play at all in the opening round of the NHL playoffs.

“You know, there is no timeline on these injuries. I can't tell you more,” head coach Alan Vigneault told reporters when asked if Sedin could play in Game 4. “He's not skating with the team and he's not coming to L.A. I don't know about reports like that. Again, I can't comment more than what I've been telling you.”

Vancouver trails Los Angeles 0-2 in the series with the next two games at the Staples Center.

Sedin scored 30 goals and recorded 37 assists for the Canucks this season.

Stanley Cup favorites on brink of elimination
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only three teams in NHL history have come back to win a playoff series after trailing 3-0.

That's the daunting task facing the Penguins, who entered the playoffs as the favorites to hoist the Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh was listed at +400 at Sportsbook.com -- ahead of West top seed Vancouver at +600, East top seed New York at +650 and defending Cup champ Boston at +800.

Pittsburgh lost 8-4 to Philadelphia on Sunday as Danny Briere, Matt Read and Max Talbot each scored twice for the Flyers. Pens superstar Sidney Crosby was held to one assist, and surprisingly got into a fight with Philly's Claude Giroux. Pens goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. was pulled after giving up six goals on 28 shots through two periods.

The Pens have been favored in all three games, only to lose them all. Game 4 is Wednesday in Philly.

Interestingly, the last team to overcome a 3-0 series deficit was Philly, which rallied past Boston in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals. The Flyers erased a 3-0 deficit in Game 7 to complete their stunning comeback.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (105, 5)

The Senators left the Big Apple with a 1-1 split in their series against the Rangers, but the Game 2 win may have cost them their captain. Daniel Alfredsson is questionable for Game 3 on Monday after taking a high elbow to the side of his head.

"It's tough for us to lose (Alfredsson). Hopefully he should be fine," defenseman Erik Karlsson told the Toronto Sun. "He's still the same old happy guy. We'll see how he feels and it's probably going to be a game-time decision."

Ottawa's offense is more than Alfie. Karlsson and Jason Spezza can carry the weight but the way the series is heading -- with this rough and tough stuff -- better suits the Rangers.

Pick: Rangers

St. Louis Blues at San Jose Sharks (-115, 5)

Having two goalies is usually a bad thing, but not for the Blues. St. Louis lost its starting goalie Jaroslav Halak to a lower body injury in Game 2 and he will miss Game 3 because of the injury too.

What a luxury it is to turn to their backup Brian Elliott, the league's leader in goals-against average. Elliott stopped all 17 shots in relief of Halak in Game 2.

Things got pretty messy in the third period of Game 2. The two teams combined for over 100 penalty minutes in the third period only. That's just the kind of game a Ken Hitchcock-coached team wants to play.

St. Louis has won five of its last six against San Jose.

Pick: Blues

Devils @ Panthers-- New Jersey came out and dominated first period in Game 1, outshooting hosts 26-6, outscoring them 3-0, but Florida scored 0:23 into Game 2, held Devils to 13 shots over first two periods, and won for just third time in last 12 games overall. Panthers are 4-10 in last 14 visits to New Jersey, but are 3-3 here over last three years. There were only 89 faceoffs in first two games, so lot less stoppages than in most games. Florida is 3-7 on power play in series, Devils 1-8. Panthers have been outshot 33-12 in first period so far in series- they'll have to withstand early surge in Devils' first home game.

Predators @ Red Wings-- All three series games ended 3-2, with losing team outshooting winners 46-15 in third period; Predators won four of last five vs Detroit, with all five totals 5. Detroit lost six of last nine games overall, four of last five at home. Nashville won six of last eight games, allowing total of seven goals in the wins. Predators won five of last eight games in this building. Team that led after the first period won all three games. Nashville was 1-16 on power play in first two games, Red Wings 3-14.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings (-165, 5)

The one constant for the Detroit Red Wings this season has been a decisive edge on their home ice. That quickly went out the window in their playoff home opener, leaving Detroit in a perilous situation Tuesday night as it prepares to host the Nashville Predators in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Nashville posted a 3-2 win in Game 3 at Joe Louis Arena – its second straight victory in Detroit counting the regular season – to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Even though Detroit’s penalty-killing unit has done a superb job of keeping Nashville’s top-ranked power play in check, the number of infractions whistled against the Red Wings is grating on the players.

Detroit was the second-least penalized team (to Nashville) in the regular season but ranks third in the playoffs with 19 penalties.

"You don't want to be wasting your energy killing penalties the whole game,” Drew Miller told reporters.

The Red Wings also need some of their top scorers to step up. Jiri Hudler, who had 25 goals during the regular season, doesn’t have a point in the series, while 23-goal scorer Valtteri Filppula has only one assist.

Pick: Under

Phoenix Coyotes at Chicago Blackhawks (-150, 5.5)

Mike Smith was the one player touted as indispensable entering the Western Conference quarterfinal between the Chicago Blackhawks and Phoenix Coyotes.

So, the news that Smith was among three Phoenix players that didn’t practice Monday raised more than a few questions as the series shifted to Chicago for Tuesday’s Game 3 tied at one game apiece. Smith was flattened by a shoulder to the head during the Blackhawks’ overtime win Saturday, but remained in the game and claimed he was 100 percent.

Smith reacted like he was beheaded when he was hit by Chicago’s Andrew Shaw during the second period, but he played extremely well the rest of the way.

Martin Hanzal, who scored in overtime of Game 1, and left wing Lauri Korpikoski also missed Monday’s practice after sustaining injuries in Game 2.

Phoenix coach Dave Tippett declined to discuss the health of any of the three players, but said of Smith: “He’s fine.”

That's good news for under bettors.

Flyers & Kings Can Wrap Up Series On Wednesday

The Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings go for shocking sweeps in their respective series when the NHL playoffs continue on Wednesday night.

Monday was a great night for high seeds with the New York Rangers (No. 1), Boston and St. Louis (both No. 2) all winning and taking 2-1 series lead. The Blues had three power play goals in their 4-3 win at San Jose and that’s not too surprising with the Sharks having the second-worst penalty kill in the league during the regular season. That needs to be rectified quickly or it will be a short series.

Tuesday’s line updates have New Jersey -170 against Florida with a total of five. The series has moved to Newark after splitting the first two in Florida.

Nashville is at Detroit and leading that series 2-1. The Red Wings are a 160 favorite with a total of five and shaded to the ‘under.’ Detroit hasn’t been nearly as invincible at home lately, losing Game 3 by a 3-2 score and going 1-3-1 in its last five played at Joe Louis Arena.

Phoenix and Chicago are tied at 1-1 as the series moves to the Windy City. The Blackhawks are -150 with a total of 5½ and needed dramatic late goals to push both games into overtime. Phoenix is flying under the radar with a potential franchise move on the horizon, but it has the better special teams and Don Best hockey analyst Benjie C. believes it could cause an upset in the series.

Peaking ahead to Wednesday, the Rangers (-120) stay in Ottawa for Game 4. Henrik Lundqvist had 39 saves in the 1-0 shutout last game and he’s a big edge in the series. The Senators' Daniel Alfredsson (concussion) is doubtful after missing last game, so check his status before going to the betting window.

Philadelphia is -125 in the close-out situation against Pittsburgh. The total is extremely high for a playoff game (6½), but not surprising with 25 total goals scored over the last two games. Benjie C. believes the spread is low as the betting public has trouble envisioning Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin getting swept. Don Best Sports analyst Brian Blessing believes there is value with the home Flyers at these odds.

Finally out West are the Kings (-120 to -125) looking for the even more unlikely sweep against Vancouver. The total is five and shaded to the ‘under.’ The Canucks' Daniel Sedin (concussion) has made the trip to Socal after missing the first three games. His return would be a big boost to the whole squad, especially brother Henrik, and it could make the difference in this game.

The top seed Canucks are not known as a gritty team, but don’t want to suffer the indignity of losing 4-straight to a No. 8 seed.
