Creighton vs. North Carolina, 03/18/2012 17:15
Point Spread: -8½/-102 North Carolina

HOT day on Saturday going 4-0 with our premium NCAA plays taking L4 days plays to 8-3. Sunday we keep it rolling with two GUARANTEED plays: Early Riser Winner and PRIMETIME Finisher Play. Save BIG, WIN BIG!

UNC -8.5: wish Creighton wasn't playing an up tempo team as they could beat just about anyone else but this matchup is terrible for the Blue Jays. Henson will play and be difference maker guarding McDermot. Zoeller and Henson are too big and fast as they run the floor better than any other big men. 4 star play

Nevada Battles Stanford In NIT Quarterfinals

Wednesday night in college basketball is the ‘calm before the storm’ with March Madness continuing Thursday, but there are still two interesting NIT games in an upset-filled tourney.

Before we delve into those contests, let’s take a look at the updated NCAA Tournament future odds, which contains some surprises.

The Fab Five: Kentucky (+200), Ohio State (+500), Michigan State (+600), North Carolina (+600), Kansas (+800).

Kentucky is the deserved favorite as coach John Calipari looks for his long-awaited first national title. Michigan State’s Tom Izzo has one crown and North Carolina’s Roy Williams has two. The Tar Heels would likely be second in the odds if not for the uncertain injury situation of point guard Kendall Marshall.

Knocking on the door: Marquette (+1200), Syracuse (+1200), Baylor (+1800), Florida (+1800).

Syracuse isn’t getting a lot of respect as a No. 1 seed, with the oddsmakers clearly predicting Ohio State to win the East Region. Center Fab Melo (eligibility) being out is the big reason. Watch out for Florida after winning its first two tourney games by an average of 30 points, plus the championship experience of coach Billy Donovan.

Don’t forget about us: Louisville (+2500), Wisconsin (+2500), Indiana (+3000).

Louisville is part of the tough and underrated West Region and will have to beat Michigan State and then the winner of Marquette and Florida to make the Final Four. Wisconsin and Indiana are part of a great Big Ten effort with four Sweet Sixteen teams and a combined 9-2 straight-up mark (7-4 against the spread).

Longshots can come true: Cincinnati (+4000), NC State (+4000), Xavier (+4000), Ohio (+7500).

North Carolina State may only be a No. 11 seed, but this is a talented group and conjuring up memories of the 1983 team that shocked Houston and ‘Phi Slamma Jamma.’ Cincinnati is the other team to watch from this group, making the finals of the Big East Tournament before March Madness and covering eight of the last nine overall.

(6) Minnesota Golden Gophers at (4) Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
TIP-OFF: 7:00 p.m. (ET) ESPN2

This is part of the NIT quarterfinals and the winner will head to New York City for the semis. Wednesday’s game is being played at Murphy Athletic Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Middle Tennessee State (27-6 SU, 20-11 ATS) has represented the Sun Belt Conference well in this tourney with wins and covers versus Marshall (86-78) and at Tennessee (71-64). The latter was extra special as the Volunteers are an in-state rival out the powerful SEC, plus a No. 1 seed in this Region 2.

The Blue Raiders finished the Tennessee game on a 15-0 run after trailing 64-56. Senior forward LaRon Dendy leads the team in both scoring (14.7 PPG) and rebounding (7.2 RPG) as they look to improve on their 15-1 SU home mark (8-6 ATS).

The Golden Gophers (21-14 SU, 18-13-1 ATS) are trying to prove that all the Big Ten power this year is not limited to the NCAA tourney. They have solid NIT road wins and covers at LaSalle (70-61) and Miami-Florida (78-60) and are 6-0 ATS in their last six games overall. Those last two opponents were the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds respectively in this region.

Minnesota has been without center Ralph Sampson III (knee) the last four games and he’s questionable for Wednesday. Junior forward Rodney Williams (11.7 PPG) has stepped up big the last three games by scoring at least 20 points. Tubby Smith could also be coaching for his job which is another motivating factor.

(5) Nevada Wolf Pack at (3) Stanford Cardinal
TIP-OFF: 9:00 p.m. (ET) ESPN2

This quarterfinal NIT matchup is part of Region 4 which saw the top two seeds of Arizona and Mississippi bow out in the first round. It will be played at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal (23-11 SU, 16-15 ATS) have taken the mantle from fellow Pac-12 school Arizona as the highest seed in the region. They opened with a 76-65 home win over Cleveland State as 6-point favorites before surviving Illinois State in overtime (92-88) as 8 ½-point home ‘chalk.’

The ‘over’ is now 5-0 in Stanford’s last five games, averaging 77 PPG during regulation. The entire season average is 71.3 PPG (including extra sessions). Reserve guard Aaron Bright (11.6 PPG) has poured in 46 total points in the two NIT games, 29 against Illinois State.

The Wolf Pack (28-6 SU, 19-9-1 ATS) are proving their 13-1 regular season record in the WAC was no fluke. They’ve won at Oral Roberts (68-59) and home against Bucknell (75-67), covering both games.

Nevada won’t be afraid of leaving Reno, going 10-2 SU and ATS in true road games this year. The team does rely heavily on its starters, getting only 18 total points from its bench in the first two games. Getting get worn down by Stanford’s depth could be the difference.

These teams last met in 1998 and 1999, with Nevada losing by an average of 36.5 points. There were no spreads listed for those games, but Stanford is 6-1 ATS in its last seven against WAC opponents.

College funds: Wednesday's best NIT bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (-3, 134)

A road victory over an in-state rival combined with Minnesota's upset of Miami gave Middle Tennessee State a home game with a chance to earn a trip to the NIT semifinals.

The Blue Raiders used a phenomenal finish - they closed the game on a 15-0 run - to knock off top-seeded Tennessee on Monday, setting up a home contest against Minnesota, which was dominant from the outset in a 78-60 win at Miami in the second round.

The No. 6-seed Golden Gophers have been road warriors in the tournament, winning at La Salle in the first round and at Miami in the second round. They never trailed against the Hurricanes, opening the game on a 12-0 run and extending their 12-point halftime lead with a 15-2 run early in the second half.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Minnesota's run through the first two rounds is that it has come without 6-foot-11 senior Ralph Sampson III, who averages 7.9 points and 4.6 rebounds and provides a menacing presence in the post. Sampson was expected to return for the opener against La Salle but still has not made his return from a knee injury.

Minnesota is one of six teams with 25 or more wins in the history of the NIT. The Gophers have reached at least the second round in 11 of their 14 NIT appearances.

Pick: Golden Gophers

Nevada Wolf Pack at Stanford Cardinal (-6, 137.5)

Less than 48 hours after rallying to beat Illinois State in overtime, third-seeded Stanford hosts No. 5-seed Nevada in the NIT quarterfinals with a trip to New York’s Madison Square Garden on the line.

Nevada, the Western Athletic Conference regular season champion, opened the NIT with wins over Oral Roberts and Bucknell, and the Wolf Pack have won nine of their last 11 games.

The Wolf Pack advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in program history after forward Olek Czyz scored 24 points in the team’s 75-67 victory over eighth-seeded Bucknell on Sunday.

WAC Player of the Year Deonte Burton averages a team-high 14.8 points, and his matchup with Stanford point guard Chasson Randle should be worth the price of admission. One win away from equaling the school record of 29 victories set in 2006-07, Nevada held opponents to 40.9 percent shooting to lead the WAC.
Like Nevada, Stanford is a solid defensive team that holds opponents to an average of 63.7 points.

Pick: Wolf Pack

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to post a line for the Pistons-Nuggets matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Washington Wizards at New Jersey Nets (-5, 204)

Two of the Eastern Conference’s cellar dwellers square off Wednesday. Both squads have lost five of six games entering a contest that wraps up a six-game road trip for the Wizards.

Washington has the second-worst record in the conference and has a 4-18 road mark. New Jersey has the third-worst record in the conference. The Nets are 5-17 at home as they wrap up a three-game homestand.

Point guard John Wall has played solidly since the All-Star break but has been turnover-prone over the last two games. Wall has committed 21 turnovers in three games after having just three over the previous three outings.

Wall is averaging 20.0 points and 8.8 assists in 11 games since the break but is now adjusting to new teammates after the trading deadline deals that sent Nick Young and JaVale McGee packing.

New Jersey forward Gerald Wallace was terrific in his second game with New Jersey. Wallace had 27 points and 12 rebounds in Monday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers and provided a spark on both ends of the floor.

However, the Nets have still dropped three in a row both straight up and against the spread, while Washington has covered in three of its last four.

Pick: Wizards

Detroit Pistons at Denver Nuggets (N/A)

The Denver Nuggets will be without forward Danilo Gallinari when they complete a nine-game homestand against the Detroit Pistons. Gallinari fractured his left thumb in Monday’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks and could be sidelined a few weeks.

The timing hurts in that Gallinari recently returned from an ankle injury. Detroit is in the midst of a tough stretch in which nine of 10 games are on the road. The Pistons are 1-3 through the first four contests.

Detroit hasn’t played since Sunday and that gave hot-scoring guard Rodney Stuckey time to recover from the left big toe ailment that sabotaged his performance in the loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Stuckey injured the toe in Friday’s game against the Phoenix Suns and had just seven points on 1-for-8 shooting against Los Angeles. He had averaged 25.1 points over the previous eight outings.

The Pistons are a much-better offensive team when Stuckey is thriving and able to use his driving ability to score or make trips to the free-throw line.

Pick: Pistons
