Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (-175, 5.5)

The Montreal Canadiens may not be heading to the playoffs, but they could have a big impact on where the Senators end up in the standings.

The two teams complete a home-and-home Friday night at Scotiabank Place after Montreal came away with a 3-2 shootout victory at the Bell Centre on Thursday.

David Desharnais scored his 16th goal of the season, recording his 11th point in the last eight games, and tallied again in the shootout to pace the Habs.

"For the most part, this team doesn't bring the best out in us, for some reason," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean told reporters. "We don't seem to be able to skate the way we've skated when we're successful. For whatever reason we don't skate very good against this team, and we have to find a solution to that. They play us real well."

Montreal has won four of its last five against Ottawa, which is battling Boston for the top spot in the Northeast. After Friday’s meeting, these two clubs will close out their season series in Montreal on Thursday.

Pick: Canadiens

Chicago Blackhawks at Dallas Stars (-130, 5.5)

After taking a 5-2 beating from the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night, Dallas Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan wasn’t exactly surprised at his team’s shoddy effort.

The Stars were riding a 10-0-1 streak heading into that game and with teams battling for playoff position, they were bound to have an off game sooner or later.

"Usually these things come down with a thud,” Gulutzan told reporters. “They don't usually go down in a shootout, last minute or a 2-1. They usually come down pretty hard, take the wind out of you a little bit and maybe wake you up.”

The Stars gave starting goaltender Kari Lehtonen a night off and with Richard Bachman in the cage, found themselves down 5-0 in the second period before they finally woke up.

You can bet Lehtonen will be back in goal Friday. He is coming off back-to-back shutouts and should be able to get the Stars back on track against the Blackhawks.

Dallas is 5-1 in its last six meetings with Chicago.

Pick: Stars

Jets & Capitals In Crucial Clash At Winnipeg

As the playoffs rapidly approach with under a month left in the NHL regular season, just about every game has major playoff and seeding implications down the stretch. Friday’s betting card of five games is no exception.

In a potential preview of a first round matchup in the Western Conference playoffs, the Chicago Blackhawks visit the Dallas Stars at 8:30 p.m. (ET) Friday night. Chicago (38-25-8) is firmly entrenched in the Western Conference’s sixth spot while Dallas (39-27-5) currently holds the third seed with a lead in the Pacific Division.

Dallas was handed its first regulation loss in nearly a month Tuesday, losing 5-2 to Winnipeg after going 10-0-1 over its previous 11 games. The Stars will try to bounce back against a Chicago team that is playing well of late with a 5-1-1 record over its last seven games. Dallas has won two of the three meetings between these two teams this season, and two of the three games have gone ‘under’ the total.

The venue could make all of the difference Friday night when the Washington Capitals head to Winnipeg to take on the Jets at 8:30 p.m. (ET). Winnipeg (33-29-8) trails Washington (36-28-6) by four points in the standings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, so this will be a huge game for both teams.

These two teams have some of the most severe home/road splits in the NHL; Washington is just 13-18-3 on the road (compared to 23-10-3 at home), while Winnipeg is 22-10-4 at home (compared to 11-19-4 on the road). The game being in Winnipeg definitely favors the Jets, but the Capitals have won four straight games and beaten the Jets twice in three meetings this year, including one in Winnipeg.

After losing to the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout Wednesday night, the Ottawa Senators will get a shot at revenge Friday night when they host the Canadiens at 7:00 p.m. (ET). Entering Thursday’s action sitting three points behind New Jersey for the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, Ottawa (36-25-10) would love to jump into that spot to avoid a scary first round matchup against Boston; or, the Senators could still jump Boston for that two-seed down the stretch.

Either way, plenty is on the line for the Senators, making the spoiler role that much sweeter for Montreal. The Canadiens have won three of four games against Ottawa this year.

Rounding out Friday’s betting card in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames (both 33-25-12) are in dire need of points in the hotly contested Western Conference, and will have to try to earn them on the road against hated rivals. The Flames head to Edmonton to face the Oilers (27-36-7) at 9:30 p.m. (ET) and the Kings travel to Anaheim to take on the Ducks (30-30-11) at 10:00 p.m. (ET). Calgary will be playing its second game in two nights as the Flames host the Phoenix Coyotes Thursday night.
