Game of the day: North Carolina at Duke
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels at No. 3 Blue Devils (Pick, 154)

THE STORY: The biggest rivalry in college basketball has plenty riding on it this time, as No. 6 North Carolina and No. 3 Duke will decide the ACC regular season champion. The Blue Devils stole a dramatic victory in the first meeting when Austin Rivers buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer for an 85-84 triumph. This time, the Tar Heels go into Cameron Indoor Stadium with an identical record. The winner gets the top seed in the ACC Tournament and the inside track at a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

TV: 7:00 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (26-4, 13-2 ACC, 16-13 ATS): The Tar Heels lead the ACC and rank second in the NCAA in scoring at 82.1 points per game. Where they really have the advantage is on the inside, with Tyler Zeller, John Henson and Harrison Barnes helping UNC tower over most opponents and lead the nation in rebounding. Zeller and Henson each recorded a double-double and Barnes scored 25 points in the first meeting. North Carolina held a 10-point lead with just over two minutes left in that game, only to have the Blue Devils light it up from long range and steal the win at the buzzer. The Tar Heels have won six straight following that setback.

ABOUT DUKE (26-4, 13-2 ACC, 13-17 ATS): The Blue Devils rank second to the Tar Heels in scoring in the ACC. Where they excel is from the perimeter, with Rivers, Seth Curry, Ryan Kelly and Andre Dawkins leading the top 3-point shooting team in the ACC. Rivers hit six 3-pointers en route to 29 points in the first meeting and Curry went 4 for 8 from beyond the arc. Duke has won seven straight, beginning with the North Carolina victory, but has needed second-half comebacks to avoid home losses against North Carolina State and Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils have dropped two at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season, losing multiple home games for the first time since 2006-07.

TRENDS:

* The road team is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
* Duke is 1-7 ATS in its last eight home games.
* UNC is 5-1 ATS in its last six games.
* The under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

TIP-INS:

1. North Carolina owns a 131-102 lead in the all-time series, but Duke has taken five of the last six.

2. Curry has averaged 17.0 points in four career games against the Tar Heels.

3. Saturday marks the seventh time in the rivalry's 92-year history that the schools are meeting with the ACC regular-season crown on the line.

What to watch: College basketball betting TV guide
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Panthers at Connecticut Huskies, 12 p.m., ESPN (-5.5, 129)

Center Dante Taylor is coming on for the Panthers. The junior dropped a career-high 17 points in a win over St. John’s this week to go with eight rebounds. It was his second consecutive game in double figures after not cracking 10 points in 16 straight outings.

"I just tried to carry it over from last game," Taylor told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I was able to finish around the basket. I tried to come in with confidence."

Washington Huskies at UCLA Bruins, 2 p.m., CBS (-3, 136)

Good luck in front of the home fans, Ben Howland. The embattled UCLA coach was trashed in a Sports Illustrated story that talked about him looking the other way when players did drugs, and allowing them to intentionally fight during training.

Howland said he addressed the issue multiple times with his team this week in practice and held a conference call to discuss the article with the media. However, an already unruly fan base won’t be too kind to Howland or provide much of an advantage.

"This is not a great day for the program and, of course, for me,” Howland told reporters. "Some of the story's claims I had no knowledge about, some were taken out of context and some were not true."

Northwestern Wildcats at Iowa Hawkeyes, 2:30 p.m., Big Ten Network (-1.5, 142)

Go ahead and call it a must-win for the Wildcats. Northwestern, which never has made the NCAA Tournament, can kiss the big dance good-bye if it doesn’t come up with a victory against Iowa.

However, the team will likely be drained after a late rally came up just short in a last-second, 75-73 loss to Ohio State this week. The team admitted to watching SportsCenter in the locker room and following their constantly-changing status in the field of 68.

"As a team we are definitely embracing it and we know we have a chance to make history," Northwestern guard Reggie Hearn told the Chicago Sun-Times. "For each and every one of us to be a part of that is really special. We're looking forward to making that happen."

Vanderbilt Commodores at Tennessee Volunteers, 4 p.m., ESPN (2, 134)

The Volunteers have a second-place SEC finish and a first-round bye in the league tournament in their sights thanks to forward Jarnell Stokes.

The freshman will be looking to build off a career-high18-point performance in an overtime win against LSU in which Tennessee rallied from 15 points down. Since becoming eligible in mid-January he is averaging nine points and seven rebounds per game.

"We've been through these situations plenty of times before, and we had the heart and mental toughness to win it,” Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin told GoVolsXtra.com. "We've got to do our job and do our part, but I think we're an NCAA tournament team."

Louisville Cardinals at Syracuse Orange, 4 p.m., CBS (-9, 131.5)

The Cardinals need to speed things up against the Orange. Louisville averaged just over 62 possessions the past five games and is struggling to find any rhythm offensively after a 58-51 clunker against South Florida on senior night. In the Cardinals’ past three losses, the team is averaging a horrendous 52.3 points.

“We want to play the pace as fast as we can and hit some shots,” Louisville guard Kyle Kuric told the Louisville Courier-Journal. “We try to do anything we can to get the tempo up, so we start forcing shots and making bad plays on offense.”

North Carolina Tar Heels at Duke Blue Devils, 7 p.m., ESPN (Pick, 154)

Center Tyler Zeller proved he doesn’t need to make field goals to score points. The senior quieted doubts about his toughness in a win over Maryland this week, making a stunning 20 of 23 free throws and finishing with 30 points. Zeller averages 6.1 free-throw attempts per game and attempted 11 in an earlier loss to Duke this season.

“He’s got a little bit of that Ichabod Crane clumsiness to him that gets his arm, legs and head going every direction,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams told the Raleigh News & Observer. “So opposing defensive players have a lot of things that they can foul.”

Texas Longhorns at Kansas Jayhawks, 9 p.m., ESPN (-11.5, 139)

Sheldon McClellan may have secured a spot in the starting lineup after his dominating performance against Oklahoma this week.

The freshman guard exploded for a career-high 24 points in just his eighth start of the year, going 10 of 19 from the field. McClellan is expected to remain in the first five against Kansas.

“I got discouraged in the first half when I missed early shots, but the coaches told me to keep shooting, and that’s what I did in the second half,” McClellan told the Associated Press.

College funds: Saturday's best NCAAB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (-4.5, 122)

The Demon Deacons won the first meeting, 59-50 at home on Feb. 15.

And they’re coming off two good performances, a rout of Boston College and a near-upset of Duke. In that 79-71 loss to the Blue Devils, senior forward Nikita Mescheriakov scored a career-high 18 points.

His emergence took some pressure off the talented duo of guard C.J. Harris (16.8 ppg) and forward Travis McKie (15.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg).

The Jackets are playing hard for new coach Brian Gregory, but their offensive inadequacies are glaring. They’re the ACC’s worst 3-point shooting team (31.0 percent), and the continued absence of swingman Glen Rice Jr. (suspended indefinitely) leaves them without a consistent perimeter scorer.

Guards Jason Morris and Brandon Reed went a combined 0 for 9 from beyond the arc in Tech’s last outing, a 56-52 loss at B.C.

Pick: Demon Deacons

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Kansas State Wildcats (-10.5, 134)

Aside from potential NCAA Tournament seeding implications, Kansas State’s regular-season finale against Oklahoma State is about as meaningless as it gets. While the Wildcats are currently tied for fifth with Texas, the outcome against the Cowboys is largely irrelevant because of the conference’s tiebreaking procedures.

If Texas upsets Kansas on Saturday, the Longhorns will earn the fifth seed by virtue of having a win against a team higher in the conference standings. If they lose, K-State will earn the spot.

Oklahoma State, meanwhile, is looking to end a disappointing season on a high note.

The Cowboys have had success at Bramlage Coliseum over the years, winning three of the last four meetings in Manhattan, Kan. That includes a 73-69 victory in 2010, their most recent visit.

Keiton Page, who had a team-high 29 points in Monday’s loss to Kansas, has hit 19 3-pointers in his last three games.

The Cowboys are 6-0 ATS in their last six games following a SU loss.

Pick: Cowboys

Saturday's betting tips: Bearcats are ATS road warriors

Who’s hot

NBA: The Pistons are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games.

NBA: The underdog is 9-3 in the last 12 Indiana-New Orleans meetings.

NHL: Nashville is 19-9 in its last 28 games overall.

NHL: Vancouver is 10-2 in its last 12 games against Eastern Conference teams.

NCAAB: Cincinnati is 7-2 ATS in its last nine road games.

NCAAB: The over is 5-0 in the last five Northwestern-Iowa meetings.

Who’s not

NBA: The Hawks are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games against Western Conference teams.

NBA: The Bucks are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games playing on zero days’ rest.

NHL: Boston is 1-6 in its last seven games against losing teams.

NHL: St. Louis is 2-7 in its last nine visits to San Jose.

NCAAB: Texas Tech is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 home games.

NCAAB: Texas is 5-12 ATS in its last 17 games following a SU win.

Key stat

21 – That’s how many points Mississippi State’s Dee Bost scored in the first meeting with Arkansas. The Razorbacks have struggled against top point guards, allowing 14 points to Alabama’s Trevor Releford and 31 to Florida’s Erving Walker. The host Bulldogs are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games against the Razorbacks.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The status of Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook (ankle) is "up in the air" for Saturday’s game against Atlanta. Westbrook turned the ankle in Thursday’s 105-102 win over the Magic and kept playing. But he left the arena with “a pretty serious limp,” according to observers. If Westbrook can’t go, Royal Ivey or Reggie Jackson would get the start.

Games of the day

No. 12 Georgetown Hoyas at No. 7 Marquette Golden Eagles (-4.5, 131)

No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels at No. 3 Duke Blue Devils (Pick, 154)

Notable quotable

"He's our best player, he's the most important part of our future. There's no way we're actively trying to trade Rondo. That makes no sense, no logical sense." – Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, disputing reports he’s trying to trade point guard Rajon Rondo.

Notes and tips

As expected, Major League Baseball expanded its playoff format to 10 teams on Friday, adding a second wild card in each league. There will be a new one-game, wild-card round in each league between the teams with the best records that are not division winners. This was the first change in baseball's playoff structure since 1995, when wild cards were first added. It means a third-place team could win the World Series.

Saturday’s Georgetown-Marquette contest will be the final game at the Bradley Center for Golden Eagles seniors Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom. In the last five games, the prolific duo has accounted for 56.7 percent of the team’s scoring. Crowder has averaged 24.4 points and Johnson-Odom 21.8 points, well above their season averages. They’ll try to end Marquette’s 0-3 skid in Senior Day games.

Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will not play Saturday at Colorado because he is experiencing concussion symptoms. Letang was hurt in the first period of Wednesday’s game against Dallas when Stars forward Eric Nystrom delivered a check that made contact with his head.

The fourth-ranked Jayhawks are out for revenge Saturday when the Longhorns come calling. Kansas had its 69-game home win streak snapped by Texas last season in a 74-63 loss. That was the Longhorns’ first win in 10 tries at Allen Fieldhouse. In the teams’ first meeting this season in Austin, Texas led by four points late but Kansas rallied for a 69-66 win.

Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom missed Friday’s game against Minnesota and will miss Sunday’s game against Chicago due to a deep bone bruise in his ankle. Lidstrom was hit by a puck a week ago, giving him a swollen ankle, and hasn’t skated since.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Mavericks sent Lamar Odom to the D-League-- WOW!!!! Now that is how to run a franchise. Try hard or we will embarrass you. Bravo!!!

-- Dallas then went to New Orleans and lost to the 9-27 Hornets; Mavs were minus-19 in the 20 minutes Jason Kidd was off the floor.

-- San Francisco beat LMU 67-60, advancing to the WCC semis where they will play St Mary's. LMU point guard Ireland was gimpy for most of the second half in this game, which hampered the Lions' cause.

-- Miami's bench got outscored 36-7 in 99-98 loss at Utah; Chris Bosh had a death in the family and missed this game.

-- Lebron James had 35 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, made a jumper with 0:24 left to put Miami up three, but he'll get criticized for passing to Haslem for the final shot, which is everything thats wrong with the NBA. If the best player doesn't take the last shot, he gets criticized.

-- Forget that it was a good pass that left a guy with a 17-foot jumper, a wide-open shot. If you're not a ballhog, you get criticized.

*************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Not sure why MLB locked their LCS/World Series dates in with TV networks before they decided to create the extra Wild Card. There’s going to be some tight fits in between series, and if there is a rainout or two, there could be some chaos, but it will make the regular season better.

12) The second Wild Card in each league is a superior idea, because it encourages teams to try and win their division, rather than put themselves in a Russian Roulette, one-game playoff to make the Elite Eight of the playoffs. Maybe they should start the season a week earlier to loosen up TV dates for October playoff games.

11) 50 years ago Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game that was played in Hershey, PA. Scoring 100 points was an amazing feat, but even more surprising is that an NBA game was played in Hershey. Too bad Darrell Dawkins (Chocolate Thunder) wasn’t around back then.

10) Chamberlain was famous for being a bad foul shooter, but he was 28 for 32 in that game. He took an amazing 63 shots from the floor, in game where three Knicks scored 30+ points. How do you score 147 and lose?

9) Golf Channel was so busy following Eldrick Woods’ every step Thursday, apparently they didn’t get film of Davis Love’s hole-in-one. Not like Love is one of the leaders or anything, and if he won Sunday it wouldn’t make a great comeback story. Oh wait it would. Bad miss.

8) AJ Burnett is out 8-12 weeks after getting his orbital bone surgically repaired. If its eight weeks, that roughly seven starts, or 20% of his season. Yet another reason why bunting is stupid; a bad team lost its best pitcher for at least 20% of the season, because he was practicing how to make out on purpose. Brilliant!!!

7) Guys from EA Sports, the video game makers, say that some gamers play so much Madden Football that they know the NFL rules better than a lot of NFL players. That made me laugh. Seriously, it did.

6) Southern Illinois canned hoop coach Chris Lowery, who won coaching players he inherited at SIU, then oversaw the program’s demise to the basement of the MVC. Question here is this: if the Illini fire Bruce Weber, do the Salukis bring Weber back to Carbondale, where he was successful? I’ve heard worse ideas.

5) Of the five teams in the NL East, Atlanta has the lowest payroll; now that’s a first in that division.

4) Maple Leafs' GM Brian Burke fired coach Ron Wilson, which doesn't seem that newsworthy considering Toronto's recent struggles, but Wilson has a very good career record, and besides, Burke was his roommate at Providence College. Business can be cold sometimes.

3) NBA trading deadline is March 15, same day that the main part of the NCAA tournament begins; not exactly best way to maximize publicity for your league. Why not have it the following Monday, when there is a lull in sports news?

2) A's opened the 2012 spring training schedule by losing 8-5 to Seattle, the first of many losses this season for a team that will try hard but they have a severe talent deficiency to overcome.

1) NFL apparently is going to come down on the Saints for having some kind of a bounty system that rewarded game-ending injuries to opposing players. Rams’ new DC is Gregg Williams, ringleader of this scheme.

I actually have no opinion, other than the Saints did win a Super Bowl with Williams there. I know its not a big an offense as spying on your opponents, but I’ll leave it at that.

Thunder On A Roll Heading Into Atlanta

The majority of NBA players may be well rested, but scoring coming out of the All-Star Game is up just a tick.

Scoring since the break is at 96.2 PPG, just slightly above the season average (95 PPG). Note this is a very small sample size of just 25 games over three days (all Friday night games still pending).

The ‘under’ is 13-11-1 (54.2 percent) in the second half despite the slightly higher scoring. The ‘under’ is at 54.7 percent for the season, but has leveled off after a huge surge in the first few weeks. Oddsmakers have adjusted totals down to deal with lower scoring overall compared to prior years.

We now turn our attention to Saturday with seven games on the docket, highlighted by an NBA-TV doubleheader.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Atlanta Hawks
7:00 p.m. (ET) on Regional Broadcasts

Oklahoma City (29-7 SU, 21-15 ATS) is showing why it’s the Western Conference favorite with close wins at Philly (92-88) and Orlando (105-102) since the break. The Thunder have won 7-straight overall and covered 4-straight. They do have a big injury situation with guard Russell Westbrook spraining his ankle last game and questionable for Saturday.

Atlanta (20-15 SU, 16-18-1 ATS) hosts Milwaukee on Friday, but is a great 8-1 ATS in back-to-back situations this year. Scoring is the huge issue lately at 80.6 PPG the last five (the ‘under’ 5-0). There is almost no production off the bench and leading reserve Willie Green (7.7 PPG) was doubtful Friday with a back injury.

This is the first meeting between the teams this year. The Thunder have won the last four and covered the last six. They’re also 10-1 ATS in the last 11 in Atlanta overall.

Milwaukee Bucks at Orlando Magic
7:00 p.m. (ET) on NBA-TV

Milwaukee (14-21 SU and ATS) has that game in Atlanta on Friday and is just 3-9 ATS in back-to-back situations this year. Drew Gooden has been starting at center for the injured Andrew Bogut and that’s a big mismatch against Dwight Howard. There’s also not a lot of size off the bench, especially with Luc Mbah a Moute (shoulder) questionable Friday.

Orlando (23-14 SU, 20-17 ATS) is 0-2 ATS since the All-Star break, a 102-95 win at Washington as 8½-point favorites and 105-102 home loss to Oklahoma City as 1-point ‘dogs. Howard has management jumping through hoops to make personnel moves to keep him around. Team focus could be a big issue up to the March 15 deadline.

These teams met three times in February with the Magic going 3-0 SU and ATS. The one in Orlando was a 94-85 margin as 7½-point favorites.

Indiana Pacers at New Orleans Hornets
8:00 p.m. (ET) on Regional Broadcasts

The Pacers (22-12 SU, 16-18 ATS) are well rested with just one game in the second half, a 102-78 home win over Golden State on Tuesday. They’ve now won 5-straight games (3-2 ATS), including a 117-108 OT home win over New Orleans on February 21. The Hornets did cover as 10½-point underdogs.

The Hornets (8-27 SU, 17-18 ATS) have a tough home game with Dallas on Friday before this one. They had a 7-game cover streak snapped Wednesday versus Toronto, a 95-84 home loss to Toronto as 3-point favorites. Inside help is needed and could be on the way with Carl Landry (knee) questionable for Friday.

New Orleans is 5-0 ATS in the last five games versus Indiana, also winning the last two years (108-96, 107-101) outright in the Bayou.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Portland Trail Blazers
10:00 p.m. (ET) on NBA-TV

The Timberwolves (18-19 SU, 20-17 ATS) are happy to have Friday off after three games in three nights beginning Tuesday at the Clippers (109-97 win). The last two were solids defeats at the Lakers (104-85) and Phoenix (104-95). The ‘over’ went 2-1 in those games and is 9-3 in Minnesota’s last 12 overall on the road.

The Trail Blazers (18-18 SU, 18-17-1 ATS) are 0-2 SU and ATS to start the second half, losses at Denver (104-95) and home to Miami (107-93). Portland couldn’t take advantage of Heat power forward Chris Bosh being out, and is 2-5 SU and ATS in its last seven home games after starting 11-1 SU and 10-1-1 ATS there.

This is the first meeting this year. Minnesota has lost an incredible 16 straight to Portland and 11 in a row at Rose Garden (3-8 ATS).
