Wednesday's six-pack

-- Jeremy Lin nailed a trey with 0:00.5 left, giving the Knicks a 90-87 win at Toronto; New York ended the game on a 13-1 run. Lin had 27 points, 11 assists and eight turnovers.

-- George Mason hit three 3's in the last 0:30, the last one by Sherrod Wright at the buzzer, as Mason stunned VCU, 62-61; excellent game.

-- TCU was down 18 to UNLV with 14:57 left, but stormed back to win 102-97 in OT, a damaging loss for the Rebels' seeding next month.

-- LSU's Anthony Hickey scored on an 8-foot floater with 0:01.4 left, as Bayou Bengals came back from 17 down to beat Miss State 69-67.

-- Red Wings beat Dallas 3-1; they've won 21 in a row at home.

-- Miami crushed the Pacers 105-90, even though they were playing for third night in row. Indiana has now lost five of last six games

Wednesday's Dirty Dozen: Trying to esplain the Linsanity........

12) Jeremy Lin has made New Yorkers forget about the Super Bowl less than two weeks after it happened; MSG stock was selling at $32.32 earlier this week, its 52-week high, despite the company losing $10M a month because of a dispute with Time Warner Cable. Sales on the Knicks’ online store are up 3,000% over this time last month; the most amazing thing about that is that they had any traffic at all at this time last month.

11) The MSG-Time Warner squabble over rights fee is a classic battle of greedy bastards; they both make a freakin’ fortune, which is why neither one will give in. You don’t get filthy rich without rippin’ people off, which is what cable/satellite TV is all about.

10) Supposedly young Lin is already booked up for All-Star weekend at lot of big bucks events, as his agent aims to strike while the iron is hot. Right now, that iron is very, very hot, and getting hotter.

9) Lin is on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, the first Knick on SI’s cover since Marcus Camby in 1999.

8) Whether Floyd Mayweather likes it or not, one of the best things about Lin is that he seems like a nice kid, a normal person, someone who will never be associated with something like this………

7) NBC Sports Channel, the old Versus channel, has signed up the CAA to show a lot of its basketball games starting next year. Always wondered why ESPN never had much to do with the CAA. Good move by NBC.

6) University of North Dakota’s sports teams are the Figthing Sioux, but Sioux City is actually in South Dakota.

5) Tangible benefit for Butler making last two Final Fours; applications to the school are up 42% this spring. You can’t buy the kind of advertising having a good basketball team brings.

4)…It is estimated that Allen Iverson earned $154M in his NBA career, that’s $154 MILLION, but now he is close to broke, as he couldn’t pay $860,000 he owed to a jeweler. How does one person blow $154M so quickly? Guess part of the answer is by running up million dollar tabs at a jeweler, but this is a damn shame. Where was his agent during all this?

3) Good news for this summer; Royals have a new TV broadcast team; Steve Physioc/Rex Hudler, who used to work together with the Angels. They’re a good team, fun to listen to.

2) The Beer Institute, wherever that is, reports that total sales of beer were up 2% last year. If you graduate from the Beer Institute, does that mean you have a good head on your shoulders? lol

1) If you’re a professional athlete or an entertainer making millions, the most important word to learn in the English language is “No”, whether your old friends disown you or not. If you don’t say no to an awful lot of parasites, those people will suck everything out of you until you wind up broke and bitter.

If you don’t believe me, ask Iverson. Ask Michael Vick. Or Mark Brunell. Or dozens of other guys who squandered a fortune. There is no such thing as a bottomless pit of money, a lesson often learned the hard way.

How great to finally have a winning week here, lets hope it continues.

Thursday's six-pack

-- Celtics lost at home to Detroit; they might have trouble making it to the playoffs, with New York playing so well, they figure to move into the #7 slot ahead of the C's. Boston has an older team.

-- Spurs are 5-0 on their current road trip, which will span 7,941 miles and nine games in all. There's a rodeo in their home arena.

-- SMU lost 47-28 at home to a mediocre UAB team; Mustangs made 8 of 43 from the floor. Games like that get coaches fired.

-- Former Tennessee QB Tee Martin, who led Vols to a national title the year after Peyton Manning graduated, is new WR coach at USC.

-- A producer for CNN won $1M in a scratch-off lottery game, three months after she won $100K in a similar game. Wonder if she's single?

-- Boise State's Derrick Marks went coast-to-coast and scored winning hoop with less than a second left- Boise nipped Colorado State 70-69.

Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

13) I’m no economist, but how in the name of Trump did the Mets lose $120M in two years, with a brand-new stadium? Mayor Bloomberg should buy the team, rid NYC of the hideous Wilpons, then flip the team for a profit to Mark Cuban or some other billionaire. He’d be a freakin’ hero. The Wilpons are a Met fan's worst nightmare.

12) If Colts’ owner Jim Irsay came right out and said, “It makes no financial sense to give Peyton Manning his $28M bonus, considering we have no idea whether he can still play, so unless he opts to pass on this bonus, we have to release him” who would say he is wrong? It will be good business if they do this. Everyone knows that, not that everyone likes the idea of Manning finishing his career somewhere else, or retiring.

11) Ron Jaworski is out of the Monday Night Football booth, but has signed on for five more years at ESPN, in what sounds like a Merril Hoge-type role. Sounds like ESPN thinks they have the next John Madden in Jon Gruden, so they want to get him maximum exposure, and so a 3-man booth is no longer needed. Jaws is a good guy; was lucky enough to meet him once. Hope he’s at peace with this move.

10) 58-year old Dan McCarney, football coach at North Texas, suffered a stroke over the weekend; sounds like he is doing OK, but that’s awful young for something like that to happen. Feel better, coach.......

9) If you go see UL-Lafayette play basketball, you get your money’s worth; five of their last 12 games went to OT, with Ragin’ Cajuns winning four of those five games.

8) What do football coaches do in the offseason? They study football. With North Carolina/Clemson switching to spread offenses next year, Virginia Tech defensive guru Bud Foster is in Columbia, MO this week, learning from Mizzou coaches about defending the spread. Coaching is like handicapping; you can't ever stop learning.

7) Penn State football coach Bill O’Brien came fairly cheap, with a base salary of $950,000 and maximum incentives of another $200,000. For a program with Penn State’s revenues, that’s pocket change. O’Brien might be the lowest-paid coach in the Big Dozen.

6) There is a funny story out there this week about a little girl in Kansas who is in kindergarten who wouldn’t do her classwork because the teacher wanted her to color in a Kansas Jayhawk, and both the girl’s parents went to Kansas State, so the little girl refused. A parent/teacher conference ensued. College loyalties run very deep with some people.

5) Arizona Cardinals haven’t drafted an offensive lineman before the 5th round since 2007; maybe if they did that, their QBs wouldn’t get hit so much, and Larry Fitzgerald would have more time to get open. .

4) Murray State won fairly easily at SE Missouri tonight, their second straight win since losing to Tennessee State. Seems like losing might have relaxed them, taking lot of the scrutiny and pressure away. Racers also clinched the OVC regular season title, their third in a row.

3) Sacramento-Knicks game was so hideous tonight that the announcers had a fairly lengthy discussion on why elephants have long memories. I wish I was making that up, but it was more interesting than the game.

2) Best wishes to Tony Gwynn after he underwent a 14-hour operation to remove a cancerous tumor from his jaw. 14 hours is a long time to be under the knife. If you use smokeless tobacco, please stop.

1) Weird schedule for the Toronto Raptors, who in the last week, hosted the Celtics-Lakers-Knicks-Spurs, four of their most attractive home tilts. Raptors beat Boston, then lost three tough games in a row.
