SPOOKY'S FUKKIN ONIONS BASKETBALL DISABLED LIST EXPRESS

17 Replies | 7594 Views

Since I am now on the disabled list and out of commission for at least 60 days lots of time to get ready for March Madness.

Also not ready to give up Football and cant wait until next September so lets get this first post on our basketball thread all about football.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a Super Bowl Sunday........

13) The NFL is highly popular because anyone can win; Green Bay won LY's title; they're the smallest market in the league. Giants were 7-7 with two games left in the season, but they won their division, then won this year's tournament and are now World Champs for the fourth time.

12) Giants are 4-1 in Super Bowls; they trailed all five games at the half.

11) Lucky's Sports Book paid off 60-1 on a safety being the first score of the Super Bowl; who would bet money on something like this? Thought the odds on that would be lot higher than 60-1.

10) Letting the Giants score that last TD was sound strategy; Patriots did come fairly close to catching that Hail Mary pass on the last play. If they just sat there and let the Giants kick a 24-yard FG, it wouldn't have been the play that gave them the best chance to win.

Patriots will regret the missed Brady/Welker pass with 4:00 left when it was 17-15. They'll regret it for a long time, as in forever, every time that Super Bowl film airs.

9) Other than Tom Brady, who do the Patriots pay all their money to? They need more star players, no? They have to be pretty far under the salary cap.

8) The intentional grounding penalty on New England that resulted in the 2-0 Giants' lead had to set an all-time NFL record for longest pass thrown that was called intentional grounding.

Kurt Warner tweeted that he didn't like the call because the ball was down the middle. Can you ever remember seeing intentional grounding called on a pass thrown that far down the middle of the field? I can't.

7) I know yesterday was Super Sunday, but best story of the day was Kyle Stanley shrugging off last week's disaster, when he shot an 8 on the last hole to blow a sure thing, losing in a playoff. He won Phoenix Open Sunday, as Spencer Levin blew his 6-shot lead after three rounds.

Tremendous story, showing how keeping an even keel lets you bounce back from adversity. Stanley was distraught after his loss last week, but he bounced back in the best way possible this week. Good for him.

6) Miami Hurricanes won 78-74 in OT as a 12-point underdog at Duke, big win for the Canes' NCAA hopes. Bottom line, though, is that Duke isn't as good as usual- they struggle against really athletic teams, losing to Florida State and Miami, both at home.

5) Dumbest Super Bowl prop bet: You could have gotten 200-1 that no touchdowns would've been scored in this game. I would've booked those bets, then held my breath......a lot........lol.

4) He is supposedly a very nice man, but I can't stand Tony Dungy on TV; listening to Dungy is like listening to freakin' Mister Rogers, which is why I rarely watch NBC's pregame/halftime stuff. Its not good.

3) What do other channels show during the Super Bowl? Not like anyone is watching; I saw World Series of Poker, World's Strongest Man, and the ESPN documentary on Chris Herren all being shown. Couple of years the figure skating championships were on. Now that figures.

Other stuff that was on during the Super Bowl.......
ABC-- America's Funniest Home Videos
TNT-- Three episodes of Law and Order
USA-- Three episodes of Law and Order/Special Victims Unit
Food Channel-- Cupcake Wars
Bravo-- Real Housewives of Atlanta
Spike Channel-- Auction Hunters

Did you know Oprah Winfrey has a private jet worth $42M?? Damn.

2) I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that Coach Belichick has won zero Super Bowl titles since it was proven he is a cheater. Last time he won a title was 2004. Tom Brady ain't getting any younger. His career record in games not quarterbacked by Brady is ten games under .500.

1) Congrats to Tom Coughlin on winning his second Super Bowl title; he will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday, deservedly so. He's taken a lot of grief from the frontrunning New York media/fans, but he persevered and is now at the pinnacle of his profession. Again.

So lets try this again. Usually do better with College Baskets than with NBA but we shall see.
The last few games in this series have gone under and I dont see tonight being any different. Most of the trends and angles are looking over which is another reason why I am going with the Under. When they zig, I zag. GL

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Jeremy Lin had 28 points, 8 assists as Knicks beat Utah without Amare Stoudemire and with Carmelo Anthony getting hurt early on.

-- Missouri won a trap game by 3 at Oklahoma, after Sooners missed on first seven foul shots.

-- UConn lost by 21 at Louisville, got shredded by ESPN's announcers. Jay Bilas: "Right now, UConn is fun to play against." Wow.

-- Clippers won by 5 in OT at Orlando; Magic starters were +12, their subs -37. High level game though; both teams are going to be good.

-- Steelers are going to hire former Chiefs' HC Todd Haley as OC; his dad was the Steelers' personnel guru during the Chuck Noll era.

-- Lou Williams had 24 points off the bench as the 76ers beat Lakers by 5. Andrew Bynum had 20 points, 20 rebounds for Los Angeles.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) NFL’s new tradition is the Super Bowl champ opening the next season at home on a Thursday night, so guessing Packers will be visiting Swamp Stadium to open the 2012 season.

12) Would think that Indianapolis will get to host another Super Bowl down the road, after getting highest marks ever for hosting such an event. When no media members complain, you know things were well-organized.

11) Las Vegas sportsbooks were said to show a small profit on the Super Bowl; anytime the favorite doesn’t cover, that’s good for the books.

10) The Patriots cut WR Tiquan Underwood Saturday night, to add an extra defensive lineman, who never got in Sunday’s game. Underwood didn’t do anything to deserve being cut. Seeing as he went to Rutgers, you figure he could wind up in Tampa Bay with coach Greg Schiano.

9) On CBS’ telecast of the Phoenix Open Sunday, they were asking pro golfers for their Super Bowl picks. Charley Hoffman picked the Patriots, saying “….I didn’t like how Eli Manning dealt with the Chargers.”, referring to when Eli forced San Diego to trade him after the draft.

What pro athlete doesn’t want to play in San Diego, especially a QB? That said, things have worked out pretty well for Eli in the Garden State, but players should play for the team that drafts them.

8) Eliminating the Pro Bowl seems like an excellent idea. Why not play the Senior Bowl or a college all-star game in its place? Those guys have something to play for. Football without emotion is a waste of time.

7) Weird basketball game at Oklahoma Saturday; Iowa State beat the Sooners in Norman, with their star Royce White taking only one shot in 34 minutes, a dunk with 1:38 left, when Cyclones were desperately holding on to a slim lead.

ISU made 15-30 from the arc, with White dishing out seven assists. How does your best player, an NBA prospect, only get one shot in 34:00?

6) Murray State is still unbeaten, but they’re hardly stampeding through the weak OVC. Racers are 0-7 against the spread in their last seven games.

5) Josh Hamilton is a free agent next winter; those drinks he took last Monday will turn out to be very, very expensive. No team is shelling out huge guaranteed money on a long-term deal to someone with Hamilton’s history. Its just good business not to put too much on his shoulders.

4) They had 173,210 fans at the Phoenix Open golf tournament Saturday, 25,000+ at the 16th hole alone. Course has parking for 60-70,000 cars. Damn. Only had 58,000+ Sunday; lot of Super Bowl parties to attend.

3) RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis of the Patriots transferred from Indiana to Ole Miss in his college days; teams he played on had a combined record of 12-34- you don’t think winning a Super Bowl would’ve meant a ton to him, maybe more than most players?

2) This year’s Super Bowl affirms one of the truths of life: You can’t have a Super Bowl without at least one commercial with monkeys in it.

1) NFL free agency starts March 13, same day at NCAA tournament’s extra four games begin in Dayton. Just think, only 8-9 weeks from now, the 2012 NFL schedule will be released, and we’ll start preparing for next football season. Until then, we’re all about college basketball. Only 33 days until Selection Sunday.

Nice winner last night so lets try and do it again. Not a big schedule but will try our luck with a conference game and take the underdog to keep it close.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Chauncey Billups tore his achilles tendon, is done for the year, and maybe his career, given his advanced age. Tough break for the Clippers. Guess he had the Spooky injury. I can totally relate although I ruptured my achilles and I had no idea how long this recovery is.

-- Danilo Gallinari/Carmelo Anthony will also miss an extended period after suffering leg injuries. Not enough rest time in this NBA season.

-- Villanova beat Providence 74-72 after trailing by 18 points early in the second half. Friars can't put anyone away.

-- Iowa State lost for the 18th straight time at Oklahoma State, which ain't going to look good on Selection Sunday.

-- Jimmer Fredette had 13 points in 17 minutes for Sacramento, losers by a hoop at Minnesota; Kings were +12 with Fredette on the court. Not sure why they're not playing him more.

-- Rangers had a tying goal waved off with 0:03.5 left, as they lost 1-0 to the Devils; ref called goalie interference, a marginal call.

Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

13) Interesting to know that the last two Super Bowl champs combined to go 19-13 in the regular season. More than ever before, getting in the postseason tournament is the main thing.

12) Memphis to the Big East is long overdue; gives the league an 18th team, and won’t hurt the football side for too long. Curious to see if Mountain West and whats left of Conference USA wind up merging.

11) Giants’ victory parade in 2008 cost the city of New York $331,000, so you figure this year’s was at least that much. Lot of money, especially considering the team plays in New Jersey.

10) College hockey’s Frozen Four is in St Petersburg, FL April 5-7, in the building the Tampa Bay Lightning call home. Frozen Four was actually here in Albany once; pretty cool event, but I guess its weird that hockey is having its Final Four in Florida. .

9) If Ryan Braun’s 50-game suspension holds up, he returns May 31, which would be eight weeks out of many fantasy league’s 19-game regular season.

8) As if there aren’t enough people who are famous for no reason, they’re now going to have a Real Housewives of south Boston; interesting to see if these women are as obnoxious as most of the other Real Housewives have become.

7) Knicks just won back-to-back games with Jeremy Lin and Steve Novak as key players; they may wind up firing Mike D’Antoni, but don’t tell me he can’t coach. The Carmelo Anthony trade screwed up their team chemistry and they haven’t been able to fix it since, until the last two games.

6) 65 underclassmen will be at the NFL Combine in two weeks; Rams need Robert Griffin III to be very impressive so a team(s) will fall head over heels for him and throw multiple draft picks at St Louis to move up to the #2 slot.

5) Greg Schiano is having trouble putting together a coaching staff with NFL experience; Cardinals/Packers have both blocked position coaches from interviewing for the OC job in Tampa Bay, which doesn’t seem fair. If a coach is going to be promoted to be a coordinator, he should be allowed to switch teams, not be blocked by his current team.

4) San Diego Padres have lowered season ticket prices on over 60% of their seats for 2012, probably not a sign the club thinks it can contend this season. If they thought they were good, they'd rip their fans off and raise prices.

3) Singer Garth Brooks was a javelin thrower way back in his college days at Oklahoma State.

2) Bill Belichick has now been the head coach in five Super Bowls, which were decided by 3-3-3-3-4 points. Too bad he wasn’t enough of a grown-up to do an interview on live TV with NBC after Sunday’s game- could have improved his image a little, not that he cares.

1) Since 2003, the winners of the Duke-North Carolina basketball games are 20-1 in their next games; not much letting down there after a win.
