Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Toronto Maple Leafs (112, 5.5)

While things are getting tight in the Eastern Conference, the surprising Rangers are still tops in that league and will bring their defensive-minded dominance to the Air Canada Centre for an Original Six delight Saturday.

King of New York

It just goes to show you what kind of year Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is having when what should have been a ho-hum 3-0 loss to the Senators Thursday was so glaring.

Maybe that’s because Lundqvist had won seven in a row before that game, including the dramatic 3-2 win over Philadelphia in the Winter Classic, and hadn’t lost since 10 days before Christmas.

Even with the slipup against the Senators, he is still 19-8-4 this season with three shutouts and a 1.89 GAA. He’s healthy, he’s not being overworked by coach John Tortorella and it’s no secret that as far as the Rangers go this year, it’ll be on the back of Lundqvist.

Joltin’ January

Give credit to Toronto coach Ron Wilson for having the troops focused to begin the new calendar year. The Maple Leafs, in that logjam at the bottom of the Eastern Conference playoff totem pole, won four in a row to start January prior to Friday’s action, including two shutouts.

In a 2-0 home win over the Sabres Tuesday, forward Nikolai Kulemin even got into the act, with a goal, an assist, four hits and three shots on net. It was his first two-point night since Oct. 30. The Maple Leafs played at Buffalo on Friday.

Toronto, in those four wins, which were all at home, scored 18 goals.

Saving his best for Saturday?

Rangers right wing Marian Gaborik is having the kind of season New York fans hoped from him, with 23 goals and 34 points. But he is squeezing the stick a little lately and perhaps will be looking to break out in Toronto.

Gaborik is a plus-9 and had seven goals in a five-game stretch of December, all of which were Rangers wins. But he’s run a bit dry. In fact, he was a minus-1 with no shots on net versus Ottawa and hasn’t recorded a point in the last three games.

Gaborik has one point in 2012 – a goal in a 3-2 win versus Florida on Jan. 5 – and is a minus-2. But the good news is that he’s still firing. Even with the whiff against the Senators, he still has 12 shots in the Rangers’ first six games of the month.

History

The Maple Leafs have won the last two meetings by 4-2 scores and, prior to that, the Rangers had won the previous three in the series. Five of the last seven games in this rivalry have gone over, including three in a row. The Rangers are 8-2 in their last 10 overall.

Los Angeles Kings at Calgary Flames (N/A)

A family affair is the headline of the night, as new Kings coach Darryl Sutter returns to Calgary to face brother, Brent. It will be the 32nd time that Darryl will battle one of his brothers from behind the bench. But there are points to be won here, not just pride. You can make a strong case that seven teams are fighting for the final three playoff spots in the wild and crazy Western Conference race, and two of them will take up residence in this game.

Not standing pat

Calgary general manager Jay Feaster has been working the phones feverishly in an attempt to save the Flames’ season. And so far, so good.

Blair Jones, acquired from Tampa Bay for defenseman Brendan Mikkelson eight days ago, scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 overtime win over Anaheim Thursday - and that’s just the beginning.

During that game, Feaster announced that the team had acquired Michael Cammalleri from the Canadiens for forward Rene Bourque. Cammalleri led the Flames with 39 goals in the 2008-09 season and will be a welcome addition to a short-handed offense that has scored one goal or less in three of its six games this month.

Finding their way

It’s been rocky at times for the Kings under Sutter, but they have been acquiring points at a pretty decent clip and their offense is coming along.

In a 5-4 shootout loss to Dallas Thursday, Los Angeles netted three power-play goals in a game for the first time since March 8, 2010. The Kings have scored nine goals in their last two games and they have garnered at least one point in every game this month but one.

They closed Thursday’s action in the No. 7 position of the West playoff jumble. And if the season ended then, they’d be matched up with the Chicago Blackhawks in Round 1.

Cruising in Calgary

The Flames have had a puzzling season indeed, but they’ve certainly got their act together at home. That’s bad news for the Kings.

Calgary has won eight straight at home and is 10-0-1 in its past 11 there. What’s more important, is the Flames bounced back from that 9-0 loss in Boston on Jan. 5 and have responded with three consecutive victories, including an impressive 6-3 win over New Jersey Tuesday.

After this game, Calgary will embark on a three-game road trip.

History

Los Angeles has won three in a row in this series, including two by way of the shootout, but Calgary had won the three previous games before that. Six of the last seven games in this rivalry have gone under, as well as eight of the last 10.

Saturday, January 14

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings (143, 5.5)

The Blackhawks have won two straight to move back atop the Central Division with 57 points.

They’re doing it without goals from Patrick Kane – he’s got just four in his last 26 games. But he’s setting up teammates (28 assists) and the three-time All-Star should start lighting the lamp soon.

The Red Wings sit two points back of Chicago after Thursday’s 3-2 shootout win over Phoenix.

The Wings are an incredible 16-2-1 at home, and 13-0-0 when Valtteri Filppula scores. Saturday they’ll go for their 14th straight home win, which would tie the team record set in 1964-65.

Goalie Jimmy Howard (2.04 GAA) and the home crowd give Detroit the edge.

Pick: Red Wings

Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes (185, 5.5)

The Bruins only scored twice in their win over Montreal on Thursday. But in the four previous games, they scored 23.

They lead the NHL in goals per game (3.6) and rank fourth in shots (32.8). Center David Krejci has a 10-game point streak, which ties his career high and is the longest point streak in the NHL this season.

The Hurricanes erupted for four goals in the first period of Thursday’s 5-2 win over Tampa Bay. Jiri Tlusty, Tuomo Ruutu and captain Eric Staal combined for three goals and six assists.

Carolina is giving up 3.3 goals per game, which ranks 28th, but is a middle-of-the-pack offensive club.

The over is 27-16-2 in Carolina’s games this season, and 10-6 in Boston’s road games.

Pick: Over

NBA

Saturday, January 14

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Nets at Utah Jazz (-9, 187.5)

Utah rested Friday night while the Nets played in Phoenix.

The 6-4 Jazz have gotten a lift from reserve Josh Howard, who had 16 points and four rebounds in the team’s 90-87 overtime loss to the Lakers on Wednesday. Howards is averaging 11.4 points and 1.1 steals and shooting 89 percent from the foul line.

Look for his minutes – he’s averaging 23 – to keep growing.

“This is the best I’ve actually felt since I’ve been back playing ball professionally this season,” Howard said. “So, the sky’s the limit.”

This will be Deron Williams’ first game back in Utah as a Net.

"I’m excited about it,'' Williams told the Star-Ledger. “I get a chance to play in Utah. I spent the first part of my career (there); they gave me a chance. My first chance, my first opportunity, my first big contract. So I owe them a lot, I’m looking forward to going back and playing."

Despite Williams’ efforts, the Nets remain a horrific defensive team.

Pick: Jazz

Los Angeles Lakers at Los Angeles Clippers (-3, 187.5)

After their rousing overtime win over the Heat, the new-look Clippers get a chance to stake their claim to Los Angeles.

The Clips earned their first statement win of the season thanks to Chris Paul’s 27 points and 11 assists, and DeAndre Jordan’s six blocks. They have the benefit of having faced the Lakers twice in the preseason, winning both, and of being more rested than Kobe’s crew, which hosted Cleveland on Friday night.

But the Lakers are playing strong defense. They entered Friday night’s game ranked fourth in points allowed (89.8) and fifth in field-goal percentage defense (41.6).

Kobe Bryant, averaging 30.3 points entering Friday’s game, will be plenty motivated to keep the Clippers in their place.

The Clippers’ starting five is one of the league’s best, but they don’t have much of a bench. Reserves contributed eight points against the Heat.

Pick: Lakers

Saturday's betting tips: Notre Dame on ATS skid

Who’s hot

NFL: The Saints are 7-0 in their last seven games as a favorite of 3.5-10.0.

NBA: Charlotte is 22-7 ATS in its last 29 games against Pacific Division foes.

NBA: The over is 14-3 in the last 17 76ers-Wizards games in Washington.

NHL: The Flyers are 10-4 in their last 14 games vs. winning teams.

NHL: Calgary is 10-1 in its last 11 home games.

NCAAB: The favorite is 7-2 ATS in the last nine Texas-Missouri games.

NCAAB: The over is 9-2 in Charlotte’s last 11 games.

Who’s not

NFL: The Patriots are 0-6 ATS in their last six playoff games.

NBA: The Jazz are 7-15 ATS in their last 22 home games.

NBA: The Bulls are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. Toronto.

NHL: The Wild are 0-8 in their last eight road games.

NHL: The Islanders are 7-20 in their last 27 games playing on one day’s rest.

NCAAB: Notre Dame is 3-9-2 ATS in its last 14 games.

NCAAB: South Carolina is 4-10 ATS in its last 14 games vs. teams with a winning percentage above .600.

Key stat

23.5 percent – That’s what Texas leading scorer J’Covan Brown is shooting over his last two games. He went 4 of 17 from the field but 11 of 12 from the foul line for a total of 20 points in those wins over Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. The Longhorns need more from their junior guard, who’s been hobbled by a right ankle injury, if they’re to hang with No. 9 Missouri in Columbia. Brown averages 18.1 points even after two subpar performances.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Knicks leading scorer Carmelo Anthony sprained his right ankle in Thursday’s loss to Memphis and is doubtful for Saturday’s game at Oklahoma City. He’s also dealing with a left wrist injury. Anthony is averaging 26.6 points and 6.5 rebounds but shooting 43.3 percent.

Game of the day

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots (-13.5, 50)

Notable quotable

"Not to say they're soft, but it's not the toughest group I've been against." – Packers nose tackle B.J. Raji to the New York Post, speaking about the Giants’ offensive line. Green Bay is favored by 8 in Sunday’s final divisional playoff game.

Notes and tips

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said the key to beating UConn, like the Irish did last year, is stopping the Huskies from running. “Always against Connecticut, it’s transition defense,” he told CBSSports.com. “Can we get back and not give up easy buckets? We must thoroughly control the tempo. We did that really well last year.” Notre Dame shot 51 percent to win 70-67 in Storrs, Conn., last season.

The status of L.A. Kings center Anze Kopitar is uncertain heading into Saturday’s game at Calgary. He had a goal and two assists in Thursday’s 5-4 shootout loss to Dallas before leaving with an upper-body injury. Kopitar got checked head-first into the boards by Stars captain Brenden Morrow. While Kings coach Darryl Sutter downplayed the injury as a bloody nose, there’s been no confirmation Kopitar will play.

Packers WR Greg Jennings hasn’t played since injuring his knee Dec. 11 against the Raiders. Reports out of Green Bay suggest he’ll be 100 percent for Sunday’s divisional playoff game against the Giants. Jennings ran and cut without problems in full practices this week. "He's shown everything to prove he's ready to roll," WRs coach Edgar Bennett said.

When No. 7 Michigan State visits Northwestern on Saturday, the rebounding disparity could be dramatic. The Spartans lead the Big Ten in rebounding margin (+9.9), while the Wildcats rank last (-4.7).

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Eight highest-paid coaches in the NFL; seven of the eight have coached in at least one Super Bowl

$7.5M—Belichick, NE— Won three Super Bowls, though none since he was proven to be a cheater.

$7M—Shanahan, Wsh— Won two Super Bowls, none since Elway quit playing.

$7M—Carroll, Sea—Further proof that this is a great country. Has done nothing in NFL to merit this salary.

$6M—Smith, Chi-- Got to Super Bowl with Rex Grossman at QB; might get there again if he can keep Cutler healthy.

$5.75M—Tomlin, Pitt—Looks so much like the actor Omar Epps that they’ve joked about it on Epps’ TV series House. $5.75M—Whisenhunt, Ariz—Cardinals had one playoff win in Super Bowl era before he took over; he got them within one play of an unlikely SB title.

$5.5M—Reid, Phil—If the Eagles don’t want him, he can come coach my team. Even-tempered, a consistent winner.

$5.25M—Coughlin, NYG—Probably most underrated coach in NFL; front running NYC media wants him fired after almost every loss.

****************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) While I was flipping between five late-night college basketball games Thursday, Golden State was putting Dwight Howard on the foul line 39 times, five more than the previous NBA record (Chamberlain, 2/22/62). Howard, shooting 42% coming in, was 21-39, as Orlando held off the injury-riddled Warriors 117-109.

JJ Redick’s comment? “Its amazing he made 21.”

12) By way of comparison, while Howard was 21-39, other 19 players who played in the game for both teams were a combined 28-35 from line.

11) Warriors may have struck gold with Washington State rookie Klay Thompson, whose dad Mychal was also a good NBA player (mostly with the Lakers).

10) Is it me, or are a lot of NBA players getting hurt, with all these games jammed together? Who thought this was a good idea, playing such a condensed, game-intensive schedule?

9) While New York State makes its employees take involuntary pay cuts, they’re sinking $40M into an expansion process at Saratoga Harness’ racino, which will include a hotel, which I must admit was long overdue- they should’ve put the hotel in when they first made the place a racino. But it does raise eyebrows to sink so much money into gaming.

8) Not only did Iona blow a 17-point halftime lead in a home loss to Manhattan Thursday, Gaels were still up 17 with 7:57 left. Jaspers’ game-winning shot was a fallaway 20-footer that banked in.

7) I was watching the Oregon State-Arizona game when a near-fracas occurred in OT; would lay blame squarely on Arizona’s Kyle Fogg for taunting, then bumping Cunningham after Fogg scored a basket and got fouled; then another Arizona player joined in and made things worse, after Cunningham shoved Fogg back, which could be excused. We’ll see how the league handles this; they might get a Beaver or two for leaving the bench area (incident happened in front of Arizona’s bench, on other end).

6) Australian Open starts Sunday night, the only tennis I watch all year, but its Dick Enberg calling live matches at 3:30am and solid late-night entertainment. Kind of neat that’s its hot as hell in Australia while we’re in the depths of winter here.

5) Not sure what this means, if anything, but people who are critical of Tim Tebow are being called “anti-Tebites”. Guy is a media sensation; new words and everything.

4) Speaking of Tebow, Northern Colorado’s basketball game Saturday was moved up an hour so fans can see the Bears host Eastern Washington and still get home in time to watch the Broncos’ playoff game.

3) San Diego State continues to rack up transfers who play basketball; next year they’ll have Dwayne Polee from St John’s and James Johnson from Virginia ready to go. Steve Fisher is turning the Aztecs into what UNLV was in the PCAA/Big West 20-25 years ago, a perennial power.

2) Over last 6+ years (since 2005) teams from previous year’s Super Bowl are 3-8 in playoff games; Super Bowl winners are 1-4, losers 2-4 after the Steelers lost last week.

1) Thank God Mark Jackson doesn’t coach in the Pac-12; Utah-Stanford combined to go 6-26 from the foul line Thursday night. Woeful Utes were 1-9 (in a 3-point loss), Stanford 5-17. Hell, you could get Stanford alums Eldrick Woods, John McEnroe and Chelsea Clinton to line up and make more than five out of 17.
