Hawks Host Heat To Tip TNT Thursday Twinbill

NBA betting action over the course of the next few days should be hot and heavy, as there are a number of teams that are going to be playing in some big time spots that have a lot to prove.

We’ll start with Thursday’s TNT doubleheader that begins with the Miami Heat visiting the Atlanta Hawks. Atlanta is off to a nice beginning to the season, going 4-2 SU and ATS despite not getting a minute on the court out of Kirk Hinrich yet. Included in that mix was a win over the Heat in South Beach and a near miss against the Chicago Bulls.

Atlanta’s win over Miami was impressive to say the least, especially in South Beach, and it now has a shot at pulling off yet another big time victory against the bona fide favorites to win the NBA title on Thursday.

If you think that the Hawks don’t have a great defense, think again. They have held teams to just 85.7 PPG this year, tops in the league, and are 5-1 for ‘under’ bettors because of it. Against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday, Atlanta held the hosts to just 42 points through three quarters before allowing 34 in the fourth to blow the game.

Going into play on Wednesday, it is the Portland Trail Blazers and not the Oklahoma City Thunder who are leading the Northwest Division. The Blazers have been awesome, going 4-1 SU and 3-1-1 ATS, and both marks amongst the best in the game.

The offense has been great for Portland, averaging 102.0 PPG, ranking No. 4 in the league, and when the team scores even 90 in a game, it has been perfect this season.

The Blazers are coming off of a big win on the road against the aforementioned Thunder, and on Thursday, they have a nationally televised home game against the big kahunas of the conference, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Portland is also on national TV the very next night when ESPN televises their game at the Phoenix Suns.

The team that has a lot to prove heading into the weekend is the Orlando Magic. The Magic are 4-2 this year, but they were very unimpressive against the Detroit Pistons on the road on Monday night and haven’t beaten a team this season that would be considered all that notable.

The Magic will be highlighted on ESPN on Friday against the Bulls, who clearly are one of the best teams in the league. This is the final home game before Orlando goes out on a long West Coast swing, and it is a game in which it could be able to get the bad taste out of the mouths of NBA bettors after its first nationally televised loss of the season against Oklahoma City.

Elsewhere on Friday night, the Lakers come back to Staples Center to take on the Golden State Warriors in a battle for bragging rights in the state of California. The Denver Nuggets will also take on the New Orleans Hornets down in the Bayou, while the Thunder host the Houston Rockets.

In the East, the big matchup of Friday night sees the Indiana Pacers take on the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden. If the Pacers can win this game on the road, it will be yet another huge step in their surprising start to the season, which has brought the team a 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS mark.

Thursday Tips

January 4, 2012

The Thursday NBA card is the lightest one through the first two weeks of the season with just four games to bet on. However, three of those contests involve playoff teams from last season, including a solid TNT doubleheader. We'll begin with a Southeast Division rivalry at Philips Arena as Atlanta looks to beat Miami for the second time in four days.

Heat at Hawks - 8:00 PM EST

There's very little time to reflect on the previous game in this fast-paced season, as Atlanta hits the home court after blowing a 19-point lead in a 76-74 setback at Chicago on Tuesday. The Hawks managed their second straight road cover as 9 ½-point underdogs, but blew a golden opportunity to move to 5-1 with a win over the Bulls. However, Atlanta put together a strong fourth quarter effort on Monday night to surprise previously undefeated Miami, 100-92.

In that victory, the Hawks outscored the Heat, 33-21 in the final quarter, while getting a 16-point effort from Tracy McGrady off the bench. Miami dropped to 0-2 SU/ATS with no rest after that loss, as Erik Spoelstra's team is averaging 94 points per game on the second end of a back-to-back. The Heat played without Dwyane Wade in Wednesday's blowout win over the Pacers, as the star shooting guard rested an injured foot. Wade is listed as a game-time decision on Thursday night.

There has been plenty of 'unders' so far this season, as the Hawks are one of the leading teams in this category with a 5-1 mark to the 'under' through six games. In fact, Atlanta has yet to allow 100 points in a game, while the winning team has reached the 100-point mark only four times in the last 10 meetings with Miami.

Mavericks at Spurs - 8:30 PM EST

The battle inside the Lone Star State takes place between a San Antonio team that is unbeaten at home against a Dallas squad that is slowly turning the corner. The Mavs started the season at 0-3, but have won two of their past three to begin Thursday's play 1 ½ games behind San Antonio for first place in the crowded Southwest Division. The Spurs continue to play without guard Manu Ginobili, who suffered a broken left hand in Monday's loss at San Antonio.

Gregg Popovich's team has been pretty easy to handicap this season by going 4-0 SU/3-1 ATS at home and 0-2 SU/ATS on the road. The Spurs are one of four teams in the league to be listed as a favorite in every game so far this season (Heat, Thunder, and Bulls the others), but San Antonio will have its work cut out for them coming up. The Nuggets invade the AT&T Center on Saturday, followed by a trip to Oklahoma City on Sunday, in which the Spurs will likely be listed as a road 'dog.

Dallas is winless in two road games, but covered in its lone contest as an away underdog in a 104-102 defeat at Oklahoma City. The Mavs cashed when receiving five points to the Thunder, but their chance at an outright win was shot down by Kevin Durant's game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. Rick Carlisle's squad is playing their fourth game in five nights following Wednesday's home victory over the Suns, as Dallas beat Oklahoma City at home in this rest situation on Monday.

Lakers at Blazers - 10:30 PM EST

Portland returns to the Rose Garden after a solid road underdog triumph at Oklahoma City on Tuesday, as the Blazers welcome in the Lakers. Los Angeles finally hit an 'over' following six consecutive 'unders' to start the season in a 108-99 home victory over Houston. The Lakers will be playing their league-leading eighth game already, but Mike Brown's club hasn't traveled west of Denver yet through nearly two weeks.

The Blazers return home where they own a 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS mark, while eclipsing the 100-point plateau in all three contests at the Rose Garden. Four of the next five games (including Thursday) will be played in the Pacific Northwest for the Blazers, as Portland is likely to be favored in each contest (at Suns, home vs. Cavs, Clippers, and Magic). The Lakers won three of four meetings last season, including an overtime win at Portland as 2 ½-point favorites last February.

Big Ten Report

January 5, 2012

By Each week we will take an inside look at the pulse of college basketball around the Big Ten and other schools around the Midwest. We will highlight certain trends, hot streaks, cold streaks, and injury updates. Conference play got underway this week and there are a bevy of things that caught our attention as professional handicappers.

We’d like to share some…

Illinois Fighting Illini: Illinois has dropped three of its last five games after starting the season 10-0, and has also failed to cover five of its last seven games. Looking back, the Illini skated through an easy early season schedule and have struggled against the last three strong opponents they’ve faced. They lost to Purdue, Missouri, and UNLV by an average of 11.6 points per game and needed overtime to beat Minnesota at home. Starting guard Sam Moniscalo (9.9 points per game) injured his ankle in the last game against Purdue. The school nipped Northwestern 57-56 on Wednesday.

Indiana Hoosiers: Indiana proved it’s for real by bouncing back from its first loss of the season (at Michigan State) with a big win over Ohio State last Saturday. The Hoosiers now have quality victories over Ohio State, Notre Dame, Kentucky, and North Carolina State. Five players average double-digit points and the offense ranks 8th in scoring and 2nd in three-point percentage. Indiana will be a force in the Big Ten race and expect the oddsmakers to value them a lot stronger moving forward (already 8-1 ATS this season).

Nebraska Cornhuskers: Nebraska’s had a rough start in its inaugural season as a member of the Big Ten. The Huskers have dropped their first three conference games to Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Ohio State by 24, 13, and 31 points, respectively. They shot just 32% field goals and 21% from beyond the arc in those three losses. Center Jorge Brian Diaz (10.9 PPG) and guard Dylan Talley (9.1 PPG) remain out for an extended period of time. The immediate future doesn’t look good for Nebraska.

Wisconsin Badgers: Wisconsin held a 170-11 home record under current head coach Bo Ryan heading into the season. The Badgers have already dropped three home games this season after back-to-back Big Ten losses to Iowa and Michigan State. The Badgers made just 34% field goals in those two losses and an astonishingly-low 16% from three point range (8-of-50). The most recent loss to MSU saw the refs take the game-tying basket away in overtime as the clock had expired before forward Ryan Evans got off the shot. Keep an eye on Wisconsin now as they difficult road tests at Michigan and Purdue coming up. It will be difficult for players to bounce back after two deflating home losses, especially if their shooting woes continue.

Cincinnati Bearcats: Cincinnati gets three players – Yancy Gates, Cheikh Mbodj, Octavious Ellis – back after each served a six-game suspension for being involved in a fight with Xavier players on December 10. Surprisingly, the Bearcats are 7-0 since the fight and have back-to-back wins over Oklahoma and Pittsburgh. Without their best big man, Gates, in the lineup, Cincy has been going with a four-guard system. Sean Kilpatrick (17.5 PPG) and Cashmere Wright (14.5 PPG & 6.3 APG) have picked up the slack. With Gates and Mbodj back in the mix, it will be interesting how Cincinnati rotates after being so successful without them.

Xavier Musketeers: After starting the season 8-0, Xavier has now dropped five of its last six games. It all started after the brawl against Cincinnati. In their recent skid, the Musketeers have bad losses against Oral Roberts, Long Beach State, and Hawaii. They opened up A10 conference play on Wednesday with an 80-70 loss at La Salle, dropping their ATS skid to 0-6.

Cleveland State Vikings: Starting guard Trevon Harmon suffered a concussion in Cleveland State’s last game against Youngstown State. The Vikings lost a halftime lead after Harmon was injured and lost the game by eight points despite being favored by 13.5. Harmon is the Vikings’ second leading scorer with 10.9 points per game and is second in both assists and steals and it’s evident that Cleveland State is much better off with him in the lineup. Harmon will for sure miss Thursday’s game against Illinois-Chicago and is uncertain for Saturday.

Dayton Flyers: The 11-4 Flyers opened Atlantic 10 play Wednesday with a 79-72 overtime win against Saint Louis without Josh Benson. Benson was having a breakout campaign before his season was ended by a knee injury sustained in the win last week over Ole Miss. He led the team in blocked shots and field goal percentage, and was second in points and rebounds. The injury is certainly devastating for him, and it puts the already thin Flyers in a tough spot going forward. At least they have an experienced senior, Luke Fabrizius (5.5 PPG), to start in place of Benson going forward.

Iowa State Cyclones: Star player Royce White played just three minutes in the last game as he was suffering from the flu. He is back and reportedly 100% for Wednesday’s game against Texas. White is Iowa State’s leader in points, assists, rebounds, blocks, and field goal percentage.

Memphis Tigers: Joe Jackson and Wesley Witherspoon both missed last Saturday’s game. Jackson (personal reasons) was expected to play on Wednesday night while Witherspoon (knee) remains questionable. The Tigers rolled Tennessee 69-51 and open up conference play against UAB on Saturday and could use both Jackson (11.8 PPG) and Witherspoon (5.7 PPG) in the lineup.

Missouri State Bears: Starting center Caleb Patterson suffered a concussion in Missouri State’s last game against Drake. Patterson is the team’s second leading scorer at 11.9 points per game. More importantly, however, is his presence on the interior. He’s a big reason why Missouri State ranks 30th nationally in opponents field goal percentage. The Bears are already 2-0 in the MVC after strong wins over Creighton and Drake. Patterson is out for their next game against Illinois State and it is uncertain when he’ll return after that.

Oklahoma State Cowboys: OK State has dropped four of its last five games (2-3 ATS), with the lone victory coming in overtime over SMU. It only gets worse for the Cowboys as starting guard Jean-Paul Olukemi suffered a knee injury in their last game and will miss the remainder of the season. The junior guard was third on the team in points, rebounds, and steals. Fellow starting guard Markel Brown injured his hip in the same game, but played in the team’s 67-59 win over Texas Tech on Wednesday. He is the team leader in assists and steals and fourth in points.

UW Milwaukee Panthers: UWM is 2-5 its last seven games. Five of those games were on the road, including the last four overall. The Panthers return to Milwaukee to open up conference play on Saturday in the first of three straight home games. In other good news they could have guard Ja’Rob McCallum back after McCallum missed the previous 10 games with a wrist injury. The junior was averaging 10 points per game and 1.6 steals per game.

College funds: Thursday's best NCAAB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Purdue Boilermakers at Penn State Nittany Lions (7, N/A)

The Boilermakers have done an outstanding job of avoiding mistakes, ranking third among Division I teams in fewest turnovers (9.7 per game), sixth in turnover margin (plus-5.5) and ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.48).

Senior forward Robbie Hummel, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, has returned to lead the team with 16.5 points and 6.2 rebounds. Shooting guard Ryne Smith (10.7 ppg, 46.3 percent 3-point shooting) and point guard Lewis Jackson (10.3 ppg, 4.0 assists) form a solid veteran backcourt.

Penn State ranks a distant last in the Big Ten in field-goal percentage (39.0) but has made up for some of that deficiency with a plus-5.9 rebounding margin, third in the conference.

The Nittany Lions are also riding a 9-4-1 streak against the number at home and we think they'll show up with a big effort Thursday.

Pick: Nittany Lions

Michigan Wolverines at Indiana Hoosiers (-7.5, N/A)

After taking down Nos. 1 and 2 last month, upstart Indiana will try to defeat yet another ranked opponent when it meets No. 13 Michigan Thursday at Assembly Hall.

The 12th-ranked Hoosiers defeated both Kentucky and Ohio State on their home floor, where they are 10-0 on the season. Eight of Indiana’s home wins have come by 15 points or more.

Last season, Indiana started conference play 0-4 and was searching desperately for a go-to scorer. Now, the Hoosiers have five players averaging double figures and have scored at least 80 points seven times.

Cody Zeller, the highly touted freshman forward, has been the biggest difference maker so far. He has given Indiana the inside presence it sorely needed in head coach Tom Crean’s first three seasons.

Zeller is the team’s leading scorer (14) and rebounder (6), and in Saturday’s win against the Buckeyes, he finished with 14 points and had several key baskets down the stretch.

It's hard to bet against the Hoosiers right now as they surge along at 8-1 against the number.

Pick: Hoosiers

Pick 'n' roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Portland Trail Blazers (-3.5, 190.5)

Many figured the Los Angeles Lakers were set to take a step back this season. If Andrew Bynum keeps playing like he has lately that may not be the case.

Bynum went off for 21 points, 22 rebounds and three blocks in Tuesday night’s win over Houston and is averaging 22.7 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks over the last three games.

"I think I'm getting a lot more touches, so it's easier to be confident," Bynum told reporters. "Before the practices every day, I'm putting in work, so it's paying off."

His conditioning is still nowhere near it needs to be and trade rumors persist, but if he can keep this drive going and the Lakers keep feeding him the ball, this could be a breakout year.

Bynum and the Lakers will need to bring it against one of the best rebounding teams in the Association.

Pick: Lakers

Milwaukee Bucks at Sacramento Kings (-1.5, N/A)

Part of Milwaukee’s problem right now is trying to find court time for a handful of power forwards.

Drew Gooden, Luc Mbah a Moute, Ersan Ilyasova, Larry Sanders and rookie Jon Leuer are all battling for minutes.

"We knew we were going to have plenty of bodies there and we hoped it would be a good problem to have, which means everybody is healthy and that we are at full strength," coach Scott Skiles told reporters.

The good news is that 10 Bucks are averaging at least 14 minutes so far this season while the club trudges through this brutal stretch that has them playing five games in seven days.

If nothing else, that should have Milwaukee relatively fresh against a Kings team that was in Denver Wednesday.

Pick: Bucks
