Bulls wrap up 4-game road trip at Clippers Friday

CHICAGO BULLS (2-1)

at LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (1-1)

Tip-off: Friday, 10:35 p.m. EDT
Line: Los Angeles -1, Total: 188.5

The new-look Clippers play their first home game of the season against their toughest opponent yet when they host the Bulls Friday night.

The Clippers were overmatched in San Antonio on Wednesday night, and it’s clear they’re still a work in progress. On Friday they’ll be dealing with a Bulls team that plays the same kind of tenacious team defense that the Spurs do, only Chicago does it better. The Bulls are coming off a Thursday night game in Sacramento, but they didn’t have to exert themselves too much in a 10-point win over the Kings. CHICAGO is the pick here.

The FoxSheets have a trend working against the Clippers:

L.A. CLIPPERS are 18-36 ATS (33.3%, -21.6 Units) after a combined score of 205 points or more over the last 3 seasons. The average score was L.A. CLIPPERS 97.0, OPPONENT 104.5 - (Rating = 1*).

Despite the Bulls’ tough defense, the FoxSheets provide a three-star trend expecting the OVER to occur:

Play Over - All teams where the total is between 180 and 189.5 points (CHICAGO) - off a road win, first 6 games of the season, playoff team from last season who lost 4 or more of their last 5 games. (26-6 since 1996.) (81.2%, +19.4 units. Rating = 3*).

The Clippers couldn’t find their way offensively in San Antonio. PF Blake Griffin (25.0 PPG, 8.0 RPG) is getting his usual easy baskets, and he was successful against the Bulls’ elite interior defense last year (30.5 PPG on 55% shooting). But in the Spurs loss, aside from Griffin, the rest of the team shot 33% from the field. PG Chris Paul (15.0 PPG on 46% shooting, 9.0 APG) and SG Chauncey Billups (16.0 PPG on 33% shooting) will have their hands full on the defensive end of the court guarding Derrick Rose, and SF Caron Butler (11.5 PPG on 40% shooting) is still shaking off the rust after missing most of last season with a knee injury.

Chicago didn’t play well in a back-to-back to start the season, following up a win over the Lakers with an upset loss at Golden State. They’re also searching for offense right now. Rose (18.0 PPG, 7.0 APG) and SF Luol Deng (18.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG) have been excellent, and PF Carlos Boozer (12.3 PPG) put up 16 points and 15 boards in Sacramento on Thursday. C Joakim Noah isn’t a focal point on offense, but he’s struggling to finish (7.3 PPG on 38% shooting). New SG Richard Hamilton (10.7 PPG on 43% shooting) is also trying to find his way.

Bynum returns to Lakers Saturday afternoon

DENVER NUGGETS (2-1)

at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (2-2)

Tip-off: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET
Line: TBD

The Lakers get Andrew Bynum back in time for a big Western Conference matchup with the Nuggets on Saturday afternoon.

The veteran Lakers need Bynum back, as this will be their fifth game in seven days. But the Nuggets still match up very well with them. Even with Kobe-stopper Arron Afflalo sidelined, Denver came into the Staples Center and won 95-90 last April. With Afflalo in the lineup this time around, and one of the NBA’s most efficient teams on both ends of the court, DENVER is the pick to win against the spread.

The Lakers salvaged a split in their first four games, all without Bynum. They lost to Chicago in the final seconds and dropped their second game of the year, in Sacramento. Since then they beat up on Utah and New York, two teams very much struggling to find their way.

Offensively, SG Kobe Bryant (27.8 PPG) and PF Pau Gasol (16.8 PPG, 9.0 RPG) continue to carry the Lakers. And new head coach Mike Brown has so far gotten a more efficient and intelligent offensive effort out of SF Metta World Peace (11.5 PPG on 50% shooting from the field).

But the Nuggets have effectively held Bryant in check since adding Afflalo. In five matchups against the Nuggets with Afflalo primarily defending him, Bryant is averaging 23.6 PPG on just 39% FG. The Lakers went 2-3 SU and 1-3-1 ATS in those games.

The Nuggets pounded the Mavs in Dallas and the Jazz at home before getting tripped up in Portland Thursday night. PG Ty Lawson (22.3 PPG, 62% FG, 42% 3-pt FG) continues to be nearly unguardable, while C Nene Hilario (14.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG) is off to another solid start. The Nuggets’ second unit has been the NBA’s best in the early going, led by newly-acquired guards Andre Miller (12.7 PPG, 8.3 APG) and Rudy Fernandez (8.7 PPG), and veteran PF Al Harrington (14.7 PPG).

NBA Weekend Starts With Clippers Hosting Bulls

Blake Griffin and the Clippers start the weekend at home vs. the Bulls.
The new-look Los Angeles Clippers make their much-anticipated home debut Friday night against the Chicago Bulls.

The Clippers are 1-point favorites with a total of 190 points. NBA-TV will broadcast at 10:30 p.m. (ET) from Staples Center in the second half of a doubleheader following Phoenix at New Orleans.

Los Angeles (1-1 straight up and against the spread) will be playing its first home game, showing off its shiny new toy in Chris Paul, who was an early Christmas present from Commissioner David Stern. Ticket sales have gone through the roof since his acquisition and it should be a great home crowd, especially with Chicago in town.

Paul scored 20 points (7-of-12 shooting) in the opening 105-86 win at Golden State, but had just 10 points (3-of-10 shooting) in a 115-90 loss at San Antonio on Wednesday. He had nine assists each game. Blake Griffin (25 PPG) isn’t having any trouble getting used to the revamped lineup.

The Bulls (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) may be feeling déjà vu during introductions. They played at Staples Center on opening Christmas Day versus the Lakers, a stunning 88-87 comeback win. Chicago then headed up the coast, losing at Golden State (99-91) on Monday before beating Sacramento on Thursday (108-98).

Point guard Derrick Rose has modest numbers by his standards at 18.0 PPG and 7.0 APG. He’s taking less shots, which is a good thing for his teammates, and the addition of Richard Hamilton gives him a legitimate backcourt scoring partner.

The Clippers went 23-18 SU at home last year, although covered just one of their final eight there. This seems to be a favorable spread for them with the Bulls on the second half of a back-to-back.

There are 10 more Friday tilts. Dallas (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) looks for its first win when it hosts Toronto (1-1 SU and ATS) as 8½-point favorites. The total is 194½. The defending champs played Oklahoma City tough (104-102 loss) on Thursday, but are allowing 108 PPG overall, helping the ‘over’ go 3-0. Playing on consecutive nights won’t help this rapidly aging bunch.

Boston hosts Detroit in a battle of winless teams. The Celtics could drop to 0-4 SU for the first time since 1969, but are at least 2-1 ATS. Paul Pierce (heel) is questionable and holding up the pointspread, and they need his scoring. Detroit (0-2 SU and ATS) could only muster 89 points at home last game against a terrible Cleveland team. Watch for the pending total.

The New Orleans Hornets are 2-0 SU and ATS and beat Boston (97-78) last game even with guard Eric Gordon out. He’s listed as doubtful tonight as they host a Phoenix (0-2 SU and ATS) outfit they already beat 85-84 as 6½-point ‘dogs in the desert on December 26. The Suns lack a marquee player with 37-year-old Steve Nash declining precipitously. This spread is also pending.

Lakers get Andrew Bynum back Saturday

The Los Angeles Lakers (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS) haven’t gotten many breaks this year, opening the season with three games in three days. They were also without center Andrew Bynum for the first four due to a league suspension.

The Lakers have won their last two contests after losing the first two. The latest came Thursday night against the Knicks, 99-82 as 4½-point favorites. Bynum is eligible to return Saturday afternoon at home versus Denver. The Nuggets (2-1 SU and ATS) can score at 111.3 PPG (‘over’ 3-0), but the Lakers are allowing just 85.2 PPG (‘under’ 4-0) even without Bynum in the middle.

The Golden State Warriors (2-1 SU and ATS) are finally playing some defense under first-time coach Mark Jackson. Their 91.3 PPG ranks sixth in the NBA and is over 14 PPG less than they allowed last year. It’s also helped the ‘under’ go 3-0.

The Warriors play their fourth consecutive home game on Saturday night versus Philadelphia. Guard Stephen Curry (ankle) is questionable after missing last game. The 76ers (1-1 SU, 1-0-1 ATS) have started the season with a West Coast trip and will be playing the second half of a back-to-back after visiting Utah on Friday.

Wizards host Celtics on New Year’s Day

The Washington Wizards may be 0-2 SU and ATS pending a Friday visit to Milwaukee, but they’ll be happy to host Boston on Sunday. The nation’s capital is a place Boston has struggled even when it was good, going 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS over the last seven games. The Wizards are scoring just 83.5 PPG so far this year, but their athletes give the older Celtics troubles.

The Lakers and Nuggets will follow their Saturday game in the City of Angels with a Sunday affair in the Mile High City. Denver is the younger and deeper team and the Lakers could have serious trouble playing in the high altitude with little rest. Look for Denver to push the ball as much as possible with speedy Ty Lawson.

West Virginia On Big East Road At Seton Hall Pirates

Senior Kevin Jones has eight double-doubles in WVU’s first 13 contests.
A week ago, you couldn't swing a dead cat around without hitting someone talking up the Seton Hall Pirates. Their relatively soft schedule to begin the season was generally noted, but the pundits still gushed about the squad second-year head coach Kevin Willard had and suggesting the Pirates could be an upset force within the Big East.

Those notions might have gone right out the window Wednesday night in Syracuse where the Orange completely dismantled Seton Hall. If Willard and the Pirates are going to at least be a fly in the conference ointment, they'll have to quickly put that whipping behind them before hosting the West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday.

The contest will be the second half of an ESPN2 doubleheader that begins with Western Michigan at Duke in what should be a full-speed scrimmage for the Blue Devils. The Hall and WVU will get underway at Newark's Prudential Center a little past 9:00 p.m. (ET), with the Pirates starting off on the NCAA odds board as slim 1-point favorites. Friday's total opened at 136.

Anyone who saw the Orange's beat-down of the Pirates might have been reminded of those Animal Planet shows with footage of adult lions chasing down baby impalas. At least the prey escapes the clutches of death on occasion, but Syracuse on Seton Hall (11-2 straight up, 6-3 against the spread) played out like one kill after another.

Granted, the Pirates were at the Carrier Dome against the No. 1 team in the land. The Orange were even playing with some revenge after Seton Hall cruised to a big upset last season in Syracuse.

The Pirates didn't perform badly on the boards, even grabbing 17 offensive rebounds, though even that positive went for naught since they couldn't find the net and convert those second chances. Herb Pope and Fuquan Edwin – who average over 32 points a game between them while each shooting 52 percent or better – combined for seven points while going 2-for-20 from the field.

A couple of dozen turnovers didn't help, to state the obvious. Give 'Cuse credit for the defense, but it was also on the Hall's offense which came in coughing it up a little less than 12 times a game.

If there's any good news for the Pirates and their hope to rebound back into the win column quickly, it's the fact this isn't one of Bob Huggins' best teams at West Virginia (10-3 SU, 7-3 ATS). The bad news is the Mountaineers are still plenty dangerous and have all but owned Seton Hall in recent years.

The Mountaineers have played a stronger schedule so far, and are beginning to make friends among bettors since their poor performance at Mississippi State to begin December. West Virginia has reeled off a 6-1 mark since then, covering five of the six lined affairs with the 'over' also 5-1 during the stretch.

The lone loss came last week against Baylor at the Las Vegas Classic, a strong showing for the Mountaineers who took the Bears to overtime before falling short, 83-81. Baylor was giving up six on the spread, and WVU bounced right back with a solid 83-69 win this week at home as 7½-point chalk vs. Villanova.

Kevin Jones was a one-man wrecking crew against the Bears, netting 28 on the scoreboard and pulling down 17 rebounds. Neither of those marks are season-highs for Jones who ranks 14th in the country in scoring (20.4), eighth in rebounding (11.5) and has eight double-doubles to his credit before we reach the new year.

Jones is officially probable on the injury report after needing a few stitches to close a gash from an elbow over his right eye in the 'Nova triumph. He should play and the battle between him and Pope should be a classic.

West Virginia has won the last seven matchups with Seton Hall, including the last three in New Jersey. The Mountaineers have also cashed betting slips in the most recent five meetings, each as the favorite. This is the first time since a 2003 meeting in East Rutherford that WVU hasn't been laying points.

Seton Hall will remain at home to take on Georgetown next Tuesday night; Wednesday (Jan. 4) finds West Virginia at Rutgers. The Pirates and Mountaineers aren't scheduled to meet each other before a potential get-together during the Big East Tournament in March.

Western Michigan Broncos at Duke Blue Devils (-20.5, N/A)

One of the major factors you have to consider here is Duke’s long layoff.

The Blue Devils head into this one after a 10-day break and have played just once over the last 19 days. That win was a 90-63-63 victory over NC-Greensboro that Duke narrowly missed the cover as a 30-point favorite.

Duke shot 53 percent from the floor, including 58 percent in the second half en route to its third straight win since falling 85-63 to No. 2 Ohio State on Nov. 29.

Duke has one of the most balanced offenses in the country and has had five different players lead the team in scoring. Freshman sensation Austin Rivers leads the way with 15 points per game for the Blue Devils, who are one of seven teams in the nation that have five or more players averaging double figures.

Defensively, Duke, which has won 41 straight home games, has held its opponent to fewer than 70 points in seven of its 11 contests, including all five home games.

Western Michigan has covered in its last three lined games but this test will prove too tough for the Broncos.

Pick: Duke

Mississippi Rebels at Dayton Flyers (-4.5, N/A)

The Rebels were rolling along at 9-1 straight up before dropping consecutive games to Southern Mississippi and Middle Tennessee State before Christmas.

Meanwhile, Dayton has rebounded to win four of its last five straight up as new coach Archie Miller looks to make his mark with the Flyers.

“Teams can’t come into our building and do what they want to do and leave and feel good about themselves,” Miller told reporters. “We have to compete. We have to have guys playing a lot, lot smarter in our system, not fouling. And on the offensive end of the floor, we need some guys (regaining) some confidence.”

The Flyers catch a break with Mississippi forward Murphy Holloway out with a high ankle sprain. He leads the Rebels in rebounding and Dayton should be able to come through here with its balanced scoring.

Pick: Dayton

Atlantic 14 road favorites of 6 or less points are 9-10 vs spread; CAA home underdogs are 5-7. Delaware is 4th-worst team in country at forcing turnovers.

ODU is 0-2 vs teams in top 100, losing by 16 at home to Northern Iowa, by 10 on neutral court to Kentucky; Monarchs are 3-5 in last eight games, but none of losses were by more than 10 points, with two of them in OT- they're making just 26.7% of 3-pointers. Princeton has been off 8 days since bad loss at Siena; they're 1-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 6-2-4 points, with 60-58 loss at ACC's NC State. Tigers are making unusually low 63.4% from line. Florida State already lost to Harvard, won't take this Ivy team lightly; Seminoles are 8-0 vs teams not ranked in top 35, with no wins by less than 12 points. ACC double digit home faves are 14-13. Ivy League road underdogs are 18-9-1 vs spread, 5-5-1 if getting double figures;

NC-Greensboro lost its last eight games, with three of last four against top 50 teams; they're 0-6 vs teams in top 120, losing by 29-41-22-15-27-12 points- this is their first game in 8 days. Richmond lost four of its last six games- they're 5-0 vs teams ranked below #200, winning by 10-21-25-31-16 points. Spiders had fairly easy win over Liberty two nights ago. Southern Conference road underdogs of 15+ points are 11-8 vs spread; Atlantic 14 double digit home favorites are 9-6.

3-7 Georgia Southern lost by 9 at Wake Forest, 20 at South Florida in its two games vs BCS teams; Eagles are turning ball over 26.7% of time, not good news against a quick Auburn team. First game back from Hawai'ian trip for Tiger squad that is 6-0 vs teams ranked below #200, with four of six wins by 13+ points. SoCon double digit road underdogs are 16-17 vs spread; SEC double digit home favorites are 12-22-3. Tigers are blocking 17.1% of opponents' shots, #8 in country.
