Georgetown Hoyas Begin Big East Play At Louisville Cardinals

Louisville’s Gorgui Dieng is averaging 10.8 points and 10.2 boards per game.
Louisville Cardinals fans can be excused if they didn't have their full attention on Tuesday night's Belk Bowl that found the football team taking on North Carolina State. After all, a huge week for the basketball squad has arrived, starting with Wednesday's Big East opener against the Georgetown Hoyas.

Tip-off from Louisville's KFC Yum! Center is slated for a few minutes past 7:00 p.m. (ET) with ESPN2 televising the action. Oddsmakers sent the Cardinals out at -5½ with 128 for the scoreboard hurdle.

Believe it or not, Rick Pitino faces the danger of his team looking past the Hoyas despite this being the conference opener against a Georgetown team ranked 12th in both polls. Louisville, No. 4 according to the AP and coaches, will travel to face their in-state rivals from Lexington this weekend when they meet No. 3 Kentucky.

Saturday's trek to Rupp Arena promises to be a true test for the Cardinals who have rolled out to a 12-0 start (4-4-1 against the spread) thanks in part to having left the comforts of home just once this season. That was more than six weeks ago, the third game on the schedule, when Louisville went to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to meet Butler. The Cardinals poured it on in the second half of that game for a 69-53 victory as 4-point road chalk.

Pitino's crew might have been looking ahead to Christmas the last time out when turnovers and some cold shooting early on plagued the Cardinals in a 70-60 win over a scrappy Western Kentucky team. The Hilltoppers bolted to a 22-9 lead midway through the first half before Louisville woke up.

The Cardinals were huge 25-point favorites vs. WKU, and have failed to cover any of their four lined games on the college basketball betting board this month. That includes a 95-87 win over Memphis that 'pushed' the 8-point spread.

Turnovers have been a problem all season for 'Ville, capped by the 20 gaffes in the win over Western Kentucky. The Cardinals are averaging 14.5 per game, with only Rutgers (15.7) and West Virginia (15.2) committing more among Big East squads. By contrast, Georgetown ranks among the better teams with just 11.8 turnovers per game, tied for 26th-best in the country and fourth among Big East sides.

This is not a particularly deep or experienced group, something the turnovers might be attributed to. Senior Kyle Kuric (13.3 PPG) leads the team in scoring with fellow senior Chris Smith fourth (10.4). Between those two are sophomores Gorgui Dieng, who is averaging a double-double with 10.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, and Russ Smith (10.5 PPG). Those four players plus junior point guard Peyton Siva and freshman forward Chane Behanan have accounted for over 80 percent of the floor time for the Cardinals thus far.

John Thompson III has been able to spread the minutes around a little more for Georgetown (10-1 SU, 6-0 ATS), and the Hoyas have been tested away from home with four off their home court. They were 7-point underdogs in Tuscaloosa on Dec. 1, pulling off the 57-55 upset of Alabama. Georgetown also played three in Hawaii during the Maui Invitational where they suffered their only setback, a 67-63 defeat at the hands of Kansas who was laying 5½.

Sitting 45th in the country in scoring (76.9 PPG) and 25th in shooting (48.7 FG%), the Hoyas are led by three upperclassmen with good balance inside and outside. Jason Clark tops the team with a 15.7 scoring mark, and is trailed by Hollis Thompson (14.9) and Henry Sims (12.5). It's a true team effort on the glass, and Georgetown's ability to pull the slight upset will be determined by how well the Hoyas keep the Cardinals off the offensive glass.

This will be the seventh meeting between the schools since the Cards joined the Big East for the 2005-06 season. The Hoyas own a 4-2 advantage in the previous six, having won the last two meetings and two of the three played in Louisville. Georgetown was a 4½-point favorite this past January when pulling off a 62-59 victory. Four of the last five battles have finished 'under' the total.

As mentioned, Louisville will be at Kentucky on Saturday while Georgetown returns home to continue Big East play vs. Providence. If the Hoyas and Cardinals meet again, it will be during the conference tournament in March.

Top-ranked Syracuse ready for Seton Hall

December 28, 2011

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A year ago Seton Hall entered the Carrier Dome with a losing record and stunned the hometown faithful with a flurry of 3-pointers in a 22-point victory over Syracuse.

The teams meet again Wednesday night under the Teflon roof in their Big East opener, and it's no surprise the unbeaten Orange, the top-ranked team in the nation, are a bit wary. The Pirates (11-1) have won eight in a row and are off to their best start since the 1992-93 season, when they won the conference championship. Seton Hall's lone loss was 80-73 to Northwestern in the championship game of the Charleston Classic in November.

``They are playing great,'' Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. ``They are in the top 10 (seventh) in the RPI. They came in here and beat us last year. They have a very good team, and it will be a challenge opening the Big East.''

It's a challenge Syracuse (13-0) seems more than ready for. The Orange are ranked No. 1 for the third straight week, receiving 54 first-place votes in the AP's 65-member media poll.

Despite the distraction of the sexual abuse case that led to the firing of longtime assistant Bernie Fine last month and a subsequent defamation lawsuit filed against Boeheim and the university by two former team ball boys, the Hall of Fame coach has kept his team focused on basketball.

``For us, it's just about staying level-headed,'' fifth-year senior Scoop Jardine said. ``We want to just stay motivated and continue to try to win every game. We know we have a good Seton Hall team coming in here. We just have to stay level-headed, keep grinding.''

Seton Hall is led by Herb Pope, who is averaging 20.3 points and 11.4 rebounds and has managed to stay out of foul trouble for most of the season. He has a solid supporting cast in Jordan Theodore (15.8 points per game and tied for fourth nationally with 7.4 assists per game), Fuquan Edwin (14 ppg and leads the nation in steals with 3.3 per game), and Patrik Auda (9.4 ppg), while Aaron Cosby is 23 of 55 on 3-pointers (41 percent).

Still, coach Kevin Willard's five freshmen promise to have a steep learning curve in the Big East beginning with the imposing Orange. Syracuse is unbeaten at this juncture of the season for the third straight year. The Orange have posted close victories over 11th-ranked Florida (72-68) at home, and Virginia Tech (69-58) and Stanford (69-63) in capturing the NIT Season Tip-off at Madison Square Garden. They also have a convincing triumph over North Carolina State (88-72) in their lone true road game of the season to date.

With 10 players averaging at least 12 minutes and none more than senior Kris Joseph's 29.8 per game, Boeheim has a luxury he's rarely had in his 35-plus seasons at the helm - impressive depth and impressive length at every position among both starters and reserves. By comparison, four Seton Hall players are averaging 30 or more minutes.

All those fresh bodies have helped Syracuse pace the nation in steals with 11.2 per game. The Orange also have a turnover margin of plus-7.8 and average seven blocks and 7.4 made 3-pointers.

Syracuse has won its last two games by the same score - 80-61 over Bucknell and Tulane - and the Orange have shown a remarkable ability to score lots of points in bunches. They ran off 23 straight against the Wolfpack and 19 in a row against the Green Wave, runs that featured waves of 3-pointers - eight in the first half against North Carolina State and five by three different players in the final 6 minutes of the opening period against Tulane.

Boeheim has downplayed the significance of that, even though his team has hit 96 of 257 (37.4 percent) from beyond the arc and each of the Orange's top five scorers has converted at least 10.

``I think it is the game. That is just the game of basketball, not this team,'' Boeheim said after the victory over Tulane on Thursday night. ``Every game of basketball is pretty much a game of runs. You get a run, and that is what I pretty much think it has always been.''

The Orange have two freshmen who are about to receive another first-year indoctrination. Rakeem Christmas and Michael Carter-Williams already know the difference between high school and college. Now, they're about to get a taste of what it's like to play in perhaps the most rugged conference in the nation.

``We're real excited now,'' Carter-Williams said. ``I mean, it's going to be great. We're going to have a fun time, and we're going in on top, so we want to stay there.''

Joseph, the team's leading scorer at 14.5 points per game, just wants his teammates to remain on an even keel - forget all the talk swirling around about being No. 1.

``We haven't thought about it at all since gaining that ranking,'' Joseph said. ``As a team, we don't think about it. We just go out as a team and play basketball.

``This (the Big East) is what we've been prepping for,'' he said. ``For the younger guys, they don't really know what the Big East is like, but they'll learn soon enough. As far as us, as leaders, we just have to prepare to win because we know what it's going to be like.''

Spurs host Clippers on Wednesday night

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (1-0)

at SAN ANTONIO SPURS (1-0)

Tip-off: Wednesday, 8:35 p.m. ET
Line: San Antonio -4.5, Total: 192.5

The new-look Clippers get their first test against one of the NBA’s elite when they visit San Antonio Wednesday night.

Both teams won their opener, with San Antonio smothering a Memphis team that knocked them out of the playoffs last April, 95-82. The aging Spurs looked like they had fresh legs, and with their rotation pretty much intact from last year they have less of an adjustment to make after a shortened training camp. Plus, San Antonio has been awfully good at home over the past two seasons. They’re 39-6 SU at home, with 36 of those wins coming by four points or more. SAN ANTONIO is the pick here.

The FoxSheets have a three-star trend working against Los Angeles:

L.A. CLIPPERS are 8-27 ATS (22.9%, -21.7 Units) against Southwest Division opponents over the last 3 seasons. The average score was L.A. CLIPPERS 92.4, OPPONENT 102.1 - (Rating = 3*).

The Clippers won their opener in Golden State, but they have some work to do as they try to find chemistry with a revamped rotation. They trailed the Warriors at halftime and didn’t pull away until the fourth quarter, when Chris Paul scored eight of his 20 points. SG Chauncey Billups shot just 6-for-19 from the field, and Blake Griffin needed to heat up to finish 9-for-18 from the field. Golden State is one of the NBA’s worst defensive teams, while the Spurs typically play some of the best team defense in the league. Though after being held in check in their first two meetings last season, Griffin went for 31 points and 13 rebounds in his third meeting with the Spurs.

San Antonio won a bruising game over the Grizzlies, holding Memphis to just 19 free throws and nine offensive rebounds. SG Manu Ginobili led a balanced attack with 24 points. In their only meeting with the Clippers in San Antonio last year, the Spurs hit 11-of-18 from behind the arc in a 107-95 win, with Ginobili (22 points), SF Richard Jefferson (22) and PG Tony Parker (21) all having strong performances. Since last year, San Antonio is shooting 48.2% from the field and 41.2% from three at the AT&T Center.

Rangers seek 6th straight win Wednesday

NEW YORK RANGERS (22-8-4, 48 points)

at WASHINGTON CAPITALS (17-15-2, 36 points)

Puck drops: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -110, Washington -110, Total: 5.5

It’s been a reversal of fortunes for the Capitals and Rangers this season, with Washington—the top seed in the Eastern Conference each of the past two seasons—and New York—a perennial playoff bubble team—swapping roles. The Rangers look to extend their five-game winning streak when they visit the nation’s capital to take on the slumping Caps on Wednesday.

New York won its only matchup with Washington this season, dropping the Caps 6-3 in D.C. on November 25. The Rangers sit atop the Eastern Conference with 48 points with a terrific 9-3-1 record in the month of December and have allowed two goals or fewer in eight of their past nine games. G Henrik Lundqvist will get a much-deserved rest Wednesday night, but backup Martin Biron has lower GAA (1.84) than Lundqvist (1.95) this season. Biron is 7-1-0 with a .933 Save Percentage in his nine games. Washington continues to suffer from an identity crisis after the firing of Bruce Boudreau, posting an unimpressive 5-6-1 since Caps’ legend Dale Hunter took over as head coach. Losers of three of their past four games, Washington has not beaten a team in the top four of either conference—based on current standings—since routing the Red Wings 7-1 back on October 22. Bottom line: the Rangers are the better team, playing much better hockey at the moment. And with an impressive 11-5-2 record away from MSG, don’t be afraid to take NEW YORK on the road with these even odds.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also sides with the Rangers:

N.Y. RANGERS are 15-3 ATS (83.3%, +10.9 Units) against poor defensive teams - allowing 2.85+ goals/game this season. The average score was N.Y. RANGERS 3.6, OPPONENT 1.8 - (Rating = 3*).

The Rangers have long featured a world-class netminder in Lundqvist—but have lacked the scoring punch to make a run in the postseason. With the offseason addition of C Brad Richards (12 G, 14 A), New York now has top-flight center to play alongside RW Marian Gaborik (22 G, 11 A)—who leads the NHL in goals. The Rangers have offensive depth throughout their lineup this season, with six skaters posting 20+ points.

New York’s defense is among the stingiest in the league, allowing an average of just two goals per game (2nd in NHL). This mark is even more impressive since the Blueshirts have been without top defender Marc Staal (concussion) all season. Fortunately for the Rangers, Staal was finally cleared for contact on Tuesday and could return to the lineup soon.

To understand the Capitals’ perplexing struggles this season, look no further than the lack of production they’ve received from their top two goal scorers: LW Alex Ovechkin (12 G, 13 A) and RW Alexander Semin (7 G, 8 A)—both of whom are just two seasons removed from 50 and 40-goal seasons, respectively. C Nicklas Backstrom (12 G, 13 A) leads all Washington scorers, along with Jason Chimera—who has a surprising team-high 13 goals.

The defense and goaltending has sunk the Caps, allowing an average of three goals per game (23rd in NHL). Both goalies have been dreadful, with starter Tomas Vokoun (12-8-0, 2.75 GAA, .907 SV Pct.) only slightly better than backup Michal Neuvirth (5-7-2, 3.24 GAA, .887 SV Pct.). Hunter’s new defense-first system has yet to yield long-term positive results, which may be more indicative of the personnel than the coach.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs (4, 194.5)

It hasn’t taken the Los Angeles Clippers long to get comfortable with the new faces in the locker room.

The Clippers have five new players on the roster, with Chris Paul obviously being the biggest offseason acquisition. He chipped in 20 points and nine assists in the club’s 105-86 rout of Golden State as 6-point favorites. Caron Butler added 11 points and 10 boards in the victory.

"We just have a great vibe here," Caron Butler told reporters. "It reminds me of Dallas last year. We were always together. If somebody was down, we'd pick 'em up. After games, we'd go out. The camaraderie was always really tight, and I feel the same thing here.”

Everybody’s expecting a drop off from the aging Spurs this season, but they got off to a good start with a revenge win over Memphis to open the year. They’d better be ready to run in this one.

Pick: Clippers

Oklahoma City at Memphis Grizzlies (1, 104.5)

A lot of Oklahoma City’s success last season stemmed from excellent free throw shooting. The Thunder owned the league’s best percentage at the charity stripe and they look like they’re ready to pick up where they left off last year.

Oklahoma City hit 29 of its 31 attempts from the line in Monday’s 104-100 win over Minnesota.

"We've always been a good shooting team at the line and we like to get there," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "We have to attack and our jump shooting is much improved but we still have to get to the basket. We still have to attack and create opportunities around the rim. Our guys stepped up."

Oklahoma will bring it to the paint against the rival Grizzlies. The Thunder were shocked by the Grizzlies in the playoffs last season, but they’ll be out for payback Wednesday.

Pick: Thunder
