In all, seven starters - five on defense - will sit for Monday night's season opener at Maryland. Those suspensions have opened the door for receiver/punt returner Phillip Dorsett and seven other freshmen on defense to see a lot of playing time. They are: Chickillo; defensive tackles Olsen Pierre and Jalen Grimble; defensive end David Perry; linebackers Gionni Paul and Denzel Perryman; and cornerback Thomas Finnie.
Asked Friday if he was nervous about putting a true freshman back to return punts in his first college game, Golden didn't hide his feelings and said: "Yes."
"We're playing a lot of freshmen under the lights in a big setting," Golden said. "But you got to make sure (you) believe in them, have confidence in them, train them under all those circumstances. Ultimately, you have to cut the cord and go let them do it.
"(Dorsett is) gifted. He's got talent. He's returned punts for a long time. This may be his first time in college, but he's been doing it for a long time. I think he'll do very well."
Defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio, whose unit will be minus Spence (29 career starts), preseason All-American safety Ray-Ray Armstrong (four starts) and defensive linemen Marcus Forston (13 starts), Olivier Vernon (13 starts) and Adewale Ojomo (seven starts), admitted it's a bit of a nightmarish scenario to have seven true freshmen on his two-deep roster who might have to contribute right away. But he is not as nervous as you might think.
"We do have some guys that have played football for us," he said. "There's some youth in the two-deep, but if you look at it, guys like (defensive end) Marcus Robinson and (defensive tackle Micanor) Regis and (defensive end) Andrew Smith and (linebacker Ramon Buchanan), (safeties) JoJo Nicolas, Vaughn (Telemaque). Those guys have all played a lot of football for us. They'll have to carry us through."
i think where miami will be hurt worse is on defense, losing 5 starters...but they are deep, ...
maryland has 7 on off and 7 on defense returning...they were 5-1 str up at home, and 3-1 as a home fav..i think they will drop off from last yr, i dont see them getting 9 wins this yr...remember miami was a 5.5 pt fav before the suspensions, now maryland is a 4 pt fav up from the posted line of 3 after suspensions were announced...everyone is going with maryland here, the o/u is 46.5....
my play here is on miami+4..but i am going to wait till tomorrow to see if it goes up, and depending on weather i also will like the over most likely, with the suspensions i think maryland could score 21 pts...miami is still going to be able to score,..if miami loses i think it will be late and by a fg, if they win i see this as a 30-23 game if they lose i think it will be about 27-24 ....so either way i have this going over the total gl all 151
