Hot/Cold, Sweet 16

December 21, 2011

With the exception of Christmas Eve when the NFL will be on full display, gamblers have plenty of college hoops action to wager on throughout this week and including three televised games on Christmas Day. Let’s take a look at several hot and cold squads before breaking out our first Sweet 16 Rankings of the season.

**HOT SQUADS**

--Southern Miss has won five in a row after rallying to clip Arizona St. 64-61 as a one-point road favorite on Dec. 19. The Golden Eagles, who have taken the cash in four of their last five games, were in a tough spot in Tempe after flying West following Saturday’s 86-82 home win over Ole Miss as 4 ½-point home ‘chalk.’ In his eighth season at the school, Larry Eustachy is hoping this will be his first team to garner an NCAA Tournament bid. So. Miss started 14-3 last year, only to fade down the stretch. With a 9-2 record and a stellar RPI ranking of No. 4, the Golden Eagles are in great shape at this early stage. Their only losses came to Murray St. (RPI: #7) in overtime and at Denver (RPI: #9).

--Speaking of Murray St., it has jumped out to a 12-0 record and is in the midst of a 4-0-1 ATS run. The Racers have 3-point shooters galore, including five players that are draining treys at a clip of 48.1 percent or better. Junior guard Isaiah Canaan is scoring a team-high 19.3 points per game. Murray St. has won outright in all three underdog spots – at Memphis, at Southern Miss and at UAB.

--Virginia has won seven consecutive games since losing a nail-biter to TCU on Nov. 18. In the process, the Cavaliers have gone 6-0 versus the number in their six lined games. After winning 67-54 at Oregon on Sunday, they stay out West tonight to play at Seattle and also visit Baton Rouge to face LSU on Jan. 2. The Cavs got a quality win over Michigan on Nov. 29.

--The Big 12 is dominating non-conference play. In fact, Kansas has only the eighth-best ledger at 7-3 and no team is below .500. Missouri and Baylor remain undefeated at 11-0 and 10-0, respectively. The Tigers and Bears have combined for an 8-1 spread record.

--Indiana is the only Big Ten squad left with an unblemished record. Not only are the Hoosiers unbeaten (11-0 SU), but they are also a perfect 7-0 versus the number. They will cruise into Breslin Center to challenge Michigan St. on Dec. 28 with a 12-0 ledger.

--Tulane hasn’t played a daunting schedule, nor should it. In the post-Katrina Era, it’s tough for the Green Wave to compete in all sports. Nevertheless, they own a 9-1 straight-up record and we’ll give them props for doing so. We’ll find out what they’re made of when they travel to the Carrier Dome to take on top-ranked Syracuse on Dec. 22.

--Ohio cooled off Northern Iowa, No. 5 in the RPI, last night by going on the road and winning a 76-59 decision as a six-point road underdog. The Bobcats, who are now No. 12 in the RPI, are 10-1 SU and 6-1 ATS. Their only loss came at Louisville by a 59-54 count in an easy spread cover as 16-point road underdogs. Ohio now has three outstanding road wins at Marshall, at Oakland and at No. Iowa. Junior D.J. Cooper is the MAC’s best guard, averaging team-highs in scoring (14.6 PPG), assists (6.4 APG) and steals (2.5 SPG).

--The Missouri Valley Conference has been down the last several years, but that is changing this season. Four schools have legit shots at making the NCAA Tournament and that development wouldn't be unprecedented, as the Valley has sent that many teams to the Dance before in the last decade. No. Iowa, Wichita St., Indiana St. and Creighton have combined for a 36-7 SU record.

**COLD TEAMS**

--Kentucky is mired on a 0-7 ATS slide. We should note, however, that the ‘Cats have been favored by 19 ½ or more in six of those seven, 24 or more in five of the seven contests.

--Butler got a nice win over Purdue in Indianapolis at Conseco Fieldhouse on a late bucket by Andrew Smith this past Saturday (12/17). However, the victory as 8 ½-point underdogs is the only time the Bulldogs have hooked up their backers all season. They fell to 1-7-1 ATS in last night’s 71-55 loss at Gonzaga as 13 ½-point puppies. I backed the ‘under’ for a winner and don’t be a shy of looking at that play in future games for Brad Stevens’ team that is now just 5-7 SU. Don’t dare write this squad off, though, because you know Stevens will have them playing better come February.

--Siena has lost seven of its last eight games and is an abysmal 1-4-1 versus the number this year. The Saints will host Princeton on Thursday night (12/22).

--Utah State’s run of 12 straight postseason appearances could be in jeopardy. The Aggies have won back-to-back contests but are just 6-5 SU and 3-4 ATS.

--Western Ky. has fallen on hard times and has one of the nation’s most putrid offensive attacks. When a team’s top shooter is making merely 34.6-percent of his shots from the floor, you KNOW it can’t throw it in the ocean. The Hilltoppers are 4-8 SU and 3-8 ATS. They play at Louisville on Dec. 23.

--Vanderbilt is still going to make the NCAA Tournament and has Sweet 16 talent without a doubt. However, the Commodores are underachieving and haven’t been nearly as formidable at Memorial Gymnasium as they usually are, losing home games to Cleveland St., Xavier and Indiana St. already.

**Sweet 16 Rankings**
These rankings were compiled before results on Dec. 21 and beyond.

1-Syracuse
2-Ohio St.
3-North Carolina
4-Kentucky
5-Duke
6-Florida
7-UConn
8-Missouri
9-Baylor
10-Louisville
11-Georgetown
12-Xavier
13-Wisconsin
14-UNLV
15-Mississippi St.
16-Indiana

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Davidson went into the Sprint Center in Kansas City on Monday night and pulled a stunning 80-74 upset over Kansas as a 13-point underdog. The Wildcats hooked up money-line backers with a lucrative plus-850 return (risk $100 to win $850). Nik Cochran was on fire and scored 21 points in just 21 minutes of playing time. Cochran only took six shots from the floor, making five, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. De’Mon Brooks, who leads Davidson in scoring, rebounding, FG% and steals, was limited to 22 minutes of PT due to foul trouble but finished with 13 points nonetheless. The victory doesn't avenge the one-point loss to KU in the Elite Eight of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, but it's a huge step for Bob McKillop's program in the post-Steph Curry Era. The battle for the SoCon's berth to the NCAA Tournament is going to be classic between Davidson and College of Charleston, and we can't rule out the possibility that the one that doesn't win the conference tourney might be worthy of at-large consideration.

--The ‘under’ is a perfect 9-0 in UAB games with a total. UCF has also seen the ‘under’ cash at a perfect 5-0 rate.

--The ‘under’ is 6-1 overall for UVA and Wake Forest from out of the ACC. The ‘over’ is 8-3 overall for Duke.

--Gamblers should continue to monitor the status of LSU sophomore guard Andre Stringer, who has missed three straight games with vertigo symptoms. Stringer is averaging 12.1 PPG for the Tigers, who handed Marquette its first loss this past weekend at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

--Top-Five Mid-Majors
1-Gonzaga
2-Harvard
3-Murray St.
4-Creighton
5-Ohio

No. 5 UNC hosts Texas on Wednesday

TEXAS LONGHORNS (9-2)

at NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (10-2)

Tip-off: Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
Line: North Carolina -11.5, Total: 154.5

Points won’t be hard to come by when No. 5 North Carolina hosts Texas on Wednesday night.

Both teams play an up-tempo attacking style, but on Wednesday it will play into Carolina’s hands. Texas has won December meetings over Carolina, SU and ATS, each of the past two Decembers, but those wins came against a UNC team that was searching for a rhythm. The Tar Heels are already 3-1 ATS against BCS conference opponents, and the fast pace of this game should allow them to cover a big spread against a team that isn’t necessarily stacked talent-wise. NORTH CAROLINA is the pick to win and cover.

The FoxSheets have a trend working in the Heels’ favor:

Play On - Home favorites of 10 to 19.5 points (NORTH CAROLINA) - after allowing 60 points or less against opponent after 2 straight wins by 10 points or more. (53-19 over the last 5 seasons, 73.6%, +32.1 units. Rating = 3*).

The Tar Heels have topped 80 points in nine of their 12 games this season; they’re third in the nation in tempo and seventh in offensive efficiency. As it does to most teams, Carolina’s length should bother the Longhorns. PF Tyler Zeller (14.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG) and PF John Henson (14.5 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 3.4 BPG) are both off to outstanding starts. They’re also getting their expected excellent play from national player of the year candidate Harrison Barnes (16.1 PPG, 49% 3-pt FG), and PG Kendall Marshall (10.2 APG, 2.5 TO PG) continues to run the offense efficiently. Since a one-point loss at then-No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 3, the Heels have rolled over four second-rate opponents by an average margin of 30.0 PPG.

Freshman-heavy Texas has been a bit underwhelming in what’s shaping up to be a rebuilding year. But the Horns did beat Temple by 12 on Saturday, their most impressive win of the season. They also scored a 10-point road win over UCLA on Dec. 3.

SG J’Covan Brown (19.3 PPG), has emerged as their go-to scorer, and he’s getting help from the freshman tandem of PG Myck Kabongo (10.8 PPG, 6.0 APG) and sixth man SG Sheldon McClellan (11.5 PPG, 52% FG). Size will be an issue for the Longhorns though, as they don’t have a proven big man who can match up with Carolina’s tandem of Zeller and Henson. Texas is holding opponents to 62.5 PPG on 36.5% shooting from the field, but those numbers have been skewed by matchups with lesser opponents.

While the win over Temple was a good one, they’ve lost neutral court games to Oregon State (100-95 in OT) and North Carolina State (77-74).

Giroux expected to return for Flyers Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (20-8-4, 44 points)

at DALLAS STARS (19-12-1, 39 points)

Puck drops: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Dallas -120, Philadelphia +100, Total: 5.5

After winning seven consecutive games to start the month of December, the Flyers have dropped their past two since taking a big bite from the injury bug. Philly looks to avoid a season-high three-game losing streak when it travels to Dallas to take on the Stars on Wednesday night.

Last week, Philadelphia announced that team captain and stud defender Chris Pronger would miss the remainder of the season with severe post-concussion syndrome. The Flyers have also been without leading scorer Claude Giroux (16 G, 23 A) for the past four games with a concussion of his own, but is set to return to the lineup on Wednesday. G Ilya Bryzgalov (14-6-3, 2.87 GAA, .898 SV Pct.) should get the start for the Flyers, who are on the second stop a five-game road trip leading up to the highly anticipated Winter Classic. The Stars lost both meetings to Philadelphia last season, and haven’t beaten the Flyers since December 1, 2007. Rookie G Richard Bachman (4-1-0, 2.25 GAA, .924 SV Pct.) has made a seamless transition into the NHL backstopping for the Stars—who have won four of their past five with the 24-year-old in net. Of Bachman’s four wins, though, only one has come against a team with a Points Percentage above .520 (Rangers). The Flyers boast the league’s best road record at 12-3-2, and with the return of an MVP candidate like Giroux to an already lethal lineup, the Stars figure to be outmatched in this game. Expect PHILADELPHIA to pick up yet another road win in this one.

This FoxSheets trend also sides with the Flyers:

PHILADELPHIA is 22-8 ATS (73.3%,+12.5 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record in the first half of the season over the last 2 seasons. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 3.4, OPPONENT 2.5 - (Rating = 2*).

Giroux’s return to the lineup will only help to bolster the NHL’s best offense, averaging 3.5 goals per game. Even with the absence, Giroux is still tied for the league-lead in points, averaging 1.39 points per game. The Flyers—who hold a narrow two-point lead over the Rangers for first place in the Atlantic Division—feature six other skaters with 20+ points, including LW Scott Hartnell (16 G, 13 A) and RW Jaromir Jagr (10 G, 17 A).

The defensive depth will definitely take a hit without Pronger, who was the unquestioned anchor of the blue line. Expect General Manager Paul Holmgren to deal for a rental defenseman at some point with the salary cap space cleared up by Pronger’s injury. Bryzgalov will make his first start against Dallas as a member of the Flyers, and he is an impressive 13-8-2 with two shutouts all-time against the Stars.

Dallas took sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division after a 5-3 win over Anaheim on Monday. The Stars find ways to win thanks to scoring depth throughout the lineup—with 11 different skaters in double-digits. LW Jamie Benn (8 G, 20 A) leads all scorers, along with linemates Loui Eriksson (11 G, 16 A) and Mike Ribeiro (4 G, 20 A).

The Stars have surged into first place thanks to the standout goaltending of Bachman, who is filling in well for the injured Kari Lehtonen. Lehtonen has missed the past nine games with a groin injury, but Bachman and Andrew Raycroft have combined for a 6-3-0 record during his absence.

Oklahoma State meets Alabama in Birmingham

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS (6-4)

vs. ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (8-3)

BJCC Arena - Birmingham, AL
Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
Line: Alabama -8.5, Total: 120.5

Alabama looks to get things going in their home state when it travels 60 miles east to host Oklahoma State Wednesday night.

The Legacy Credit Union Holiday Classic will be played at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Arena, a one-hour drive away from the Tide’s Tuscaloosa campus. That means that while it’s technically a neutral court, this is essentially a home game for ‘Bama. While the Tide are a surprising 0-3 ATS (5-1 SU) at home this season, they went 13-2 ATS in home games a year ago and should be able to handle an inexperienced Oklahoma State team that hasn’t played well away from Stillwater (1-4 SU). ALABAMA is the pick.

The FoxSheets have a three-star trend siding with the Crimson Tide:

Play On - Favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (ALABAMA) - excellent defensive team - allowing <=57 points/game on the season, on Wednesday games. (35-10 over the last 5 seasons, 77.8%, +24 units. Rating = 3*).

The Cowboys are coming off a disappointing showing against New Mexico. While it was technically a neutral court game, they had a clear advantage playing in Oklahoma City. But they faded late in a 66-56 loss, failing to make a single field goal in the final 7:25 and shooting 32% from the field on the game. Shot-making has been an issue all season. Aside from a win over NAIA Langston University, OSU is shooting 40.6% from the field on the season. Freshman SF Le’Bryan Nash (12.7 PPG), one of the most heralded recruits in program history, was expected to carry a large part of the scoring load. But he’s making just 37.4% of his shots, including an ugly 2-for-15 performance in the New Mexico loss.

Alabama has dropped three of four, but they were all relatively difficult games. The Tide lost a home game to Georgetown by two points, then fell at Dayton by 12, and to Kansas State in Kansas City, 71-58. Alabama is once again defending well (56.7 PPG, 36.4% FG allowed) but its three-point shooting has been horrific (24.4%, 3.5 makes per game). The Tide frontcourt is excellent though, led by PF JaMychal Green (15.9 PPG, 7.0 RPG) and SF Tony Mitchell (14.9 PPG, 7.0 RPG).

Texas Longhorns at North Carolina Tar Heels (-12, 154.5)

There’s no questioning the Tar Heels’ talent, but their focus is a work in progress.

North Carolina has dropped two of its last three against the spread and looked sluggish in its last game against Nicholls State before pulling away to cover the fat 38.5-point line.

"We knew he was very frustrated, especially at halftime," senior Tyler Zeller told reporters of coach Roy Williams. "He came in, and said a lot of things that were very true - something that we can't be that lax when we go out and play. We've got to be able to play with intensity."

The message didn’t get through until Williams benched his entire starting five in the second half. He put them back in with about 11 minutes left on the clock and they went on a 16-1 run to secure a 99-46 win.

The Longhorns are dealing with similar issues as they start three freshman and have dropped four of the six games that have seen a pointspread. This could be a learning experience for Texas against a refocused Tar Heels squad.

Pick: Tar Heels

Cal Poly SLO Mustangs at DePaul Blue Demons (-2.5, 130)

DePaul has one more tune-up game before Big East play begins at the end of the month, and welcomes Cal Poly SLO to the Allstate Arena on Wednesday.

The Blue Demons have put together a strong showing despite some major injuries to the frontcourt. DePaul will be without 6-foot-9 forward Donnavan Kirk for an indefinite period due to back problems, and are without slasher Tony Freeland (shoulder) and freshman Montray Clemons (knee) for the season.

Those missing pieces haven’t stopped DePaul from producing its best start since the 2005-06 season. The Blue Demons are scoring a ton, delivering than 79 points per game behind the play of Cleveland Melvin, who is averaging 18.7.

The Mustangs have held teams to just 53.9 points per game so far this year, but they haven’t seen an offense like this yet.

Pick: Over

NCAAB
Armadillo's Write-Up

Wednesday, December 21

Keep in mind that first semester just ended at most colleges, so transfers are becoming eligible in some places, making things a little trickier......

Duquesne is 0-3 on road, losing by 8-6-14 points, also their only three games vs top 100 teams; Dukes are #188 in defense despite being 10th in country forcing turnovers. George Mason won five of its last six games after three of their first four had gone OT. Patriot opponents are making only 28.6% from arc. Atlantic 14 road underdogs of 6 or less points are 12-7 vs spread; CAA home favorites of 7 or less points are 3-5.

First true road game for 9-1 Seton Hall squad that has neutral court top 100 wins over VCU/St Joe's; Pirates force turnovers on 24.2% of foes' possessions. Big East road underdogs of 6 or less points are 4-9 vs spread; Atlantic 14 home favorites of 6 or less points are 10-2.

Big X road underdogs of 4+ points are 2-7-1 vs spread; ACC double digit home favorites are 10-13.

NC-Wilmington shoots just 27.7% behind arc; they're 4-6, with three of last four losses by 5 or less points. CAA single digit road dogs are 2-15 vs spread; ACC single digit home favorites are 6-5. Seahawks won three of last four games after an 0-5 start.

UL-Monroe lost 71-59 at home to Indiana State on Nov 14, making just 37% from floor; Warhawks are 1-11 after getting beat 81-63 at UNLV Monday. Sun Belt road underdogs of 12+ points are 20-8-1 vs spread; MVC home favorites of 12+ points are 6-5.

Third game in five nights for Cornell squad that beat Albany in OT on Saturday, then lost 64-60 at Illinois Monday; Big Red is 0-4 on road, losing by 21-9-8-4 points. Penn State is 1-4 vs teams ranked in top 170, with only win by 4 over South Florida. Ivy League single digit road dogs are 11-4 against spread; Big Dozen single digit home favorites are 12-6.

Central Florida is 8-2 despite being poor-shooting team; they're 4-0 vs teams not ranked in top 200, winning by 12-19-2-12 points; Knights are holding teams to 27.7% shooting behind arc. UL-Lafayette is 0-6 against teams ranked in top 125, losing by 20-19-9-17-12-8 points. Conference USA road favorites of 5 or less points are 3-7 vs spread; Sun Belt single digit home underdogs are 8-6.

Cal Poly is 3-1 on road, allowing 40.7 ppg in the wins; two of their three losses are top 30 teams (UNLV/St Mary's). Mustangs' pace is #344 in country, 2nd-slowest. 8-3 DePaul plays #11 pace; they've won last four games, all vs teams ranked #239 or worse- they're 0-3 vs top 100 clubs, losing by 1-2-11 points. Big West road underdogs of 8 or less points are 8-3 vs spread; Big East home favorites of 6 or less points are 0-5.

Oklahoma State lost four of last six games; they're 0-4 vs top 50 teams, losing by 15-2-6-10 points. Alabama lost three of last four games- they scored 62 or less points in all four. Crimson Tide is making just 24.4% from arc (#341). Big X road underdogs of 4+ points are 2-7-1 vs spread; SEC single digit home favorites are 6-5. Young Tide (one senior in their rotation) is already playing sixth game vs top 60 opponent (3-2).

Middle Tennessee is making 56% of 2-point shots; they're 4-1 on road, 2-1 vs top 100 teams, winning at UCLA, splitting with Belmont. 9-2 Ole Miss is 2-0 vs Sun Belt teams, winning by 22-12 points; they're 1-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by 30-4 points. Rebels shoot just 59.6% from line as a team. Sun Belt road underdogs of 5 or less points are 4-5; SEC home favorites of less than 5 points are 4-0. This is a good game.

Arizona State needed its prize freshman PG eligible, but he isn't, so Sun Devils are struggling- they lost last two games at home at buzzer, to Northern Arizona/Southern Miss; ASU is already 2-5 at home, not good. Fresno State lost its last four games, by 7-4-19-7 points; they're 0-5 on road, with last three road losses by 7 or less points. WAC road dogs of 7 or less points are 3-6; Pac-12 home favorites of 7 or less points are 4-8.

Nomadic, experienced Iona is playing 6th straight road game, going 5-1 in previous six; they're 2-0 vs teams not ranked in top 200, winning by 12-36 points. Wm&Mary is 1-9 vs D-I teams, forcing less turnovers than snyone in country- they lost last three games vs D-I teams, all by 30+ points. MAAC favorites are 6-10 vs spread, 4-4 on road; CAA are 3-7, 0-4 if they're getting more than 7 points.

Tenn-Martin lost 18 of its last 19 games vs Murray State, losing eight in a row here, with six of the eight by 18+ points; Skyhawks lost 10 of 11 vs D-I teams, turning ball over 27.1% of time; opponents are shooting 56% inside arc against Martin. Unbeaten Racers have three top 100 wins and don't play anyone rest of year ranked higher than #183, so they have to guard against overconfidence, because target is on their back now.
