Saturday's List of 13: Some Saturday basketball knowledge

13) Horizon—No teams in top 70, one in top 100, with #71 Cleveland State highest-ranked right now. Its still amazing that #101 Butler lost the national title game the last two years; simply an amazing accomplishment.

12) Colonial—No teams in top 50, only three in top 100; teams are combined 32-43 so far, very disappointing. James Madison is only team in league ranked in top 190 in pace, so teams play slow and so far this season, not very well.

11) Conference USA—Memphis is only team ranked in top 70, so this is a one-bid league unless Tigers get upset in conference tourney; half the league is ranked #161 or worse. Tulane is 8-0, but has played the worst schedule in the entire country.

10) West Coast—Having #22 BYU on board has helped; they’ve got three of top 32 teams, with Gonzaga/St Mary’s/BYU plus LMU, which has beaten UCLA/Saint Louis.

9) Missouri Valley—Creighton is fun to watch, ranked #11 on offense, #172 on defense. Coach’s son McDermott is scoring machine who is not quite as eager on the defensive end. Wichita-UNLV game Saturday could turn out to be big result come Selection Sunday.

8) Mountain West—San Diego State won four of last five games, all of which were decided by 4 or less points. Unbeaten UNLV had great win at UCSB, on heels of their North Carolina upset.

7) Atlantic 14—This is a weird league, with eight states and District of Columbia represented; they’ve got three of top 31 teams, but also have five teams ranked #124 or worse.

6) Pacific 12—Down year, with only Stanford/Cal ranked in top 45. Half the league is ranked 106th or lower. Quite possible that Colorado will wind up in top half of league this season. UCLA’s kids act like they hate playing basketball.

5) ACC—Only three teams in top 30, and one of those, Florida State, lost its last three games, getting held to 41 points by Harvard. Very possible that 2-5 Boston College is the worst ACC basketball team ever.

4) SEC—Have three of top 11 teams (Kentucky-Florida-Alabama), but after them, only Vanderbilt is in top 70. #131 Auburn lost at Seton Hall Friday, after having been 4-0 against second-worst schedule in country.

3) Big X—Have seven teams in top 60, only two (Missouri/Kansas) in top 25; half the league’s head coaches are in their first or second year in their current job.

2) Big East—Have seven teams in top 25; also have five teams ranked #111 or worse. Weird to see Pitt ranked #153 in nation, 14th in league on defense. Defense is usually their strong suit.

1) Big Dozen—Have eight teams ranked in top 40; Iowa and Penn State are by far the worst teams. Is this the year Northwestern gets into NCAAs for first time?
