I do throw the above three something when they service. Garbage collectors receive their gratuities once a year, usually during Christmas. Same for the mailman.

I usually do (if they do good work) makes them willing to come back when needed even on weekends and holidays (they remember people who tip and tip well)

For someone in the catering business 26 years and depended on gratuities as part of my salary, I guess it goes with the territory or remained in my blood when recognizing that type of serviceable work.

When I had my business I always tipped the mailman. Problem is they are not allowed to accept tips or presents. So would give them a card or something with an american express gift cheque in it.

I usually tip a serviceman if I am hiring them or they are someone I will be dealing with. I have made a few exceptions with moving to the new house since the builder is constantly sending over someone to fix or repair something. It was getting crazy.
Basically if the guy goes out of his way or I will be using him in the future I always give a tip.
Being in the service business all the years it was always a nice gesture but I do limit it to people I am doing business with on a regular basis or if someone goes out of their way to assist in some way.
